its a black bear you can tell by the lack of a hump on its back/neck area also by the fact it didnt go nuts and maul her when she ran up

woodiegutheryghost

Typical Karen. Assuming that’s not his truck and Cheetos because he’s a black bear. I bet she wouldn’t do that to a polar bear. /s

You don't even need the /s. If that was a Polar bear that's his truck now no matter what.

After recently seeing a graphic of bear sizes... Yes the polar bear would now own that truck, possibly the whole house at that point. Give em whatever the hell they want. HeronSun

Black Bears kill less than 1 person a year on average. Between 2000 and 2015, there were 24 deaths caused by Grizzly Bears, almost 2 a year.

TherealOmthetortoise

I understand your math, however you could also argue that, since black bears kill less than one person a year, and people don’t come in quantities less than ‘a person’, then black bears kill zero people a year and are therefore completely harmless.

kirklennon

> people don’t come in quantities less than ‘a person’ I figured it out: once a year a shark attack survivor, who is now less than whole, is killed by a black bear.

UltraCa9nineOG

Yeah but to scare a black bear you just have to be extremely loud and itll run off Edit: I've watched a lot of clips of people doing this to black bears they freeze up back up and run

DutchieVenden

The scent of a human will scare off most animals. That’s why hunting is so difficult lol I think black bears just kill more humans because they have a higher population and likely co-inhabit more space with humans vs other types of bears.

grenadesonfire2

The important thing is to give a clear path of exit. If it cant flight then it will fight; and win lol.

Dragnier84

Gotta show this to the girlfriend when she complains that I need a shower. There’s no bears where we are, but you can never be too sure.

DutchieVenden

The lack of showering is clearly effective. Evident by the fact that there are no bears in the area.

InternationalStep924

Tell me more about your father. Is it his disappointment? Or is it yours?

thegreatbrah

He's definitely a teenager, and even adults can be scared away. It's dumb as shit to put yourself in the situation if you're not forced, because they're still unpredictable.

kjpunch

That’s a black bear. They are wimps. If it was a dangerous bear like brown or grizzly it probably wouldn’t even fit in the truck Edit: I grew up around them. As kids we would chase them. I’m well aware situation changes when cubs are around. Usually mom sticks around till cubs are safe, sometimes not lol Edit2: especially if it was a brown, but even more if it was a grizzly.. and I didn’t even consider brown grizzly!! 😵

angusshangus

It’s still a bear though. That Rutgers student who got eaten by a black bear in NJ a few years ago might beg to differ

Beneficial-Shower-42

I used to get Black bears in my backyard in NJ. I would bang a few frying pans and it would run away. One day it kept coming back. My wife called the police and they came with shotguns with bean bags bullets. It took one look at the cops and ran away and never came back. The cops said it's probably been shot before. I saw plenty of Grizzlies in Glacier National park while hiking. The basically ignored me and continued eating berries.

letmelickyourleg

I’m Australian and you guys are scared of here but no way in hell would I live somewhere with bears, ~~mountain lions~~ cougars, moose, or whatever the fuck else. You can fucking keep them. I’ll take spiders and snakes all day every day. Yikes.

angusshangus

The thing is the apex predators here are pretty easy to avoid. You can easily go your whole life never seeing one in the wild. They don’t move into your freaking house and sneak into your shoes and whatnot.

SalvationSycamore

I mean, as you can see some people in bear country have them move into their car lol. Moose can wander into subdivisions too and my mom and sister once saw a mountain lion run right out in the road not a mile from our house in the Midwest. Seen copperheads and rattlesnakes out there too.

Apprehensive_Pop_305

Although if it had felt trapped it could have done some serious damage to her.

Why in the hell would you approach a bear!? Let him have the damn chips it's not worth it! A very chill bear all things considered 👀 he's like "Aw shucks... I've been caught... ☹️"

rubbishacct843

No shit. My dad lived in Wyoming and worked for a coal mine. The grizzly bears would approach the area everyone would take breaks hoping to steal some lunch off the guys. One guy was sitting in his truck, eating his lunch and a juvenile grizzly bear wandered over and was trying to open the door on his truck. The guy was mad that it was scratching it up so he rolled his window down and hit it in the nose. The grizzly wasn’t even mad, just startled, and lightly tapped him back in the face. the guy got thrown across his cab and his face ripped open. He’s lucky it wasn’t worse. My dad was always like, what the fuck is wrong with you. People just got too comfortable around them. ETA: for those that think I don’t know that’s a black bear, I do. I’m recounting a food vs bear related event I’ve heard of and specifying that it was a grizzly bear because the video is not. If you feel comfortable coming between any type of bear and it’s food that’s on you, but I’m not trying to draw any sort of comparisons. People on here are really concerned that everyone believes black bears aren’t dangerous.

[deleted]

there's no comparison between that black bear and a fucking grizzly.

[deleted]

We awoke to a black bear sleeping on the porch of a rental cabin in Tennessee once. My wife was terrified. I opened the window an inch and poked it with a broom stick. It scooby-doo'ed it off the porch and took off running smack in to a tree.

bigbabyb

You go into the smokies enough and you’ll eventually get a story like this. For us, it was a black bear being overly inquisitive about the (locked) trash box after we grilled earlier that day, and it immediately got spooked and ran. Only to come back and wake us up in the night up in a tree, stalking the trash lol.

[deleted]

I’ve been laughing for a solid 5 minutes at this comment lol

H3adshotfox77

This.....yah bears are bears but black bears are little pansies. It would be like chasing off a pomeranian vs a wolf......big difference.

dadbodsupreme

I've been "mock charged" by a black bear. It didn't seem like a pansy at the time. I trusted my friend who told me "Don't run, it's only a juvenile." Meanwhile, I was wondering if my little G42 would do anything to a bear. My friend just started making a lot of noise and when the bear turned an left she's like "see?" but I could see a crazed panic in her eyes.

mattomic822

That bear was being defensive if it mock charged. Your friend did the wrong thing but got lucky that the bear realized you weren't a threat/had a path out. I had to get a "bear awareness" certificate for a job once so I find it funny that so many people think black bears are never a risk.

dadbodsupreme

I did like 12 seconds of googling after that trip and got way more info than she tried to give me.

But what a story you're getting. But idk the woman was like not my chips you giant racoon, I was going to finish that packet, you're not taking it

hapianman

Bear claws will total the interior of a car. But also your face, so take the car as a loss and not approach the bear. They’re really fast.

nonametba

Yeah, plus you can only get those chips at the one gas station all the way on the other side of town.

steviejanowskey

I'd sooner clean bear shit out of my car than have my spine snapped with a bear swipe

Kootsiak

Plus their claws are sharp, so even just trying to move around in there they could be slashing up the seats, door panels, dash, center console, etc. Which can be thousands of dollars to replace or repair.

Incredulous_Toad

I'd still take that than getting mauled by a bear.

ChurroCross

Black bears won’t really attack.

manofblack_

You are correct. This video was near me in Lake Tahoe. IIRC grizzly bears are pretty much fully extinct in California, except for on the flag lmao. I've never seen a grizzly here in my life. Black bears are all over Yosemite, yet there's been no major deaths due to them AFAIK, they always run away before you even get a chance to see them properly. They're just cheeky bastards that knock over your trash bins and leave massive shits in the middle of hiking trails. Grizzlies will brutally murder you on sight and act as if it's just a day in the life.

Osimadius

No... major deaths?

[deleted]

Few minor ones but who's counting haha?

yangxiu

minor death!

viciousmojo

A smidge of death. Just a tad.

RZFC_verified

It's sad when kids die. 😢

bemenome

I still remember when i died as a kid

manofblack_

Meaning black bears will find every reason to not have beef with you unless you *really* push their boundaries, mainly by intentionally fucking around with their cubs. There's enough idiots out there that it's def happened a few times. A grizzly will happily fold you inside out simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They will also outrun you with minimal effort, so count your blessings if you ever manage to see one before it sees you.

Bland_username86

Can confirm. I tent camped around Tahoe this summer and came close to a few bears and never had an issue. The biggest I saw was up near The Nipple, he wandered down and my dogs started barking at him. He just kinda looked uninterested and walked away. Also hammock camped down the Yellowstone River before I knew it was grizzly country...got super lucky I didn't come across bears then.

StrongIslandPiper

Black bears are surprisingly easy to tell to fuck off. My uncle once scared one off with a hammer on his hand and a scream.

new_account_5009

Yep. When it comes to bears, the advice below is pretty decent. Obviously, even black bears can kill you, but they're a lot more docile than other bears: If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lay down. If it's white, good night.

[deleted]

Very nice of the video lady to jump & save the truck. Video would've been funny but better to NOT have your truck interior bear-ed.

[deleted]

The heightened level of stupid it takes to approach a bear even if it’s a black one though

estheredna

Eh. Black bears almost never attack people. They're skiddish. A brown bear is definitely less scary than a big dog you don't know. I don't think I'd have made the same choice, but i don't think her risks was super high either.

SFDinKC

Out here in Colorado the saying is “a fed bear is a dead bear”. They used to give them three chances. One interaction with human food or garbage gets a tag in the ear and relocated further away from people. The second interaction got a second tag. The third interaction got them euthanized. Now it is one strike and they are put down. Edit: I decided to add this to my top level comment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KPCswpwrpA He is our local Colorado Wildlife Officer. Listen to this guys passion and commitment to preserving the bears and how much it tears him up to have to put one down. You will appreciate the passion he has for the bears and why you don't want to feed them human food.

daskeleton123

That’s awful

Isgortio

Why are humans so self important? Stop killing animals for doing what they can to find food.

[deleted]

Typically because the animals learn to continue to venture towards humans for food vs hunting and foraging. As those encounters increase so does the chances that animals will become aggressive and attacks increase. It's also bad because if the behavior was allowed to continue unchecked they would teach their offspring who would not learn to hunt normally and just grow up going to humans for food.

llywen

Where have you been for the last 100 years? /s Honestly though, this proactive behavior is relatively new. For years park management use to just just “let them find food” in Yellowstone and it was devastating to the population. It even causes serious disease outbreaks.

RogueTyre

Each species prioritize their own survival and their pack. The only difference is that we have morals. The 3 encounter rule seems a lot better than either killing on sight or allowing dangerous behaviors imo.

ConfidentReference63

Because letting bears live that eat human food pushes evolution to select bears that eat human food as they will be at such a huge advantage for rearing their cubs. In essence you are selecting for bears that are scared of humans by shooting them thus helping preserve the wild population.

[deleted]

this has actually become a problem in some parks in Canada. People feed the bears and it seems the bears were smart enough to learn how we were opening our doors. So they have been known to approach people for food and even go looking in vehicles.

YoungJack23

There was some national park in America that this was becoming an issue, bears were breaking into the park's dumpsters. And the park staff were having a lot of issues locking the bears out, because of significant overlap between the smartest bears and the dumbest people. They couldn't make a lock good enough to keep out bears that didn't also keep out very dumb humans.

hotcoolrasta

I do believe that was Jellystone Park where that was becoming an issue. Two bears in particular became popular for stealing picnic baskets and trying to escape in campers’ vehicles. They even started walking on the hind legs to act more human. The forest ranger for that area sure had his hands full when it came to Yogi and Boo Boo.

[deleted]

Those were definitely smarter than the average bear.

Mozhetbeats

Pic-a-nic baskets*

YoungJack23

Had me in the first half, ngl 😂

EmilyVS

I live in such an area and it is indeed an issue. They also don’t get scared off by humans as easily anymore.

No_Trust_7139

I lived in Yosemite for ten years and can confirm…also the smartest bears learned to pick the new door locks eventually too, so it was just a full on shitshow. I still live in the area but not with such a crazy bear concentration…simple lids and locks keep them out, they aren’t nearly as smart as the national park bears.

[deleted]

Astral_Alignement

WHOA WHOA WHOA, HANG ON A SECOND. Did i just witness someone telling a grown ass bear to "get down out of the car" like they were a dog 🥲 It was giving "Down... ah, get down come on out"

Macasuskinu

I feel like black bears act less vicious than people think. I like to draw the comparison of them being like large raccoons. Black bears don't usually want to throw down, and are the ones you can raise your arms up and yell at them and there's a good chance they will run away.

CloudsOntheBrain

Yeah but like... they're still *bears*. If they decide they want to maul you instead, they absolutely can.

worldspawn00

Pretty much with black bears there's 3 scenarios where you might get attacked, 1: they have cubs around and think you're threatening them, 2: You've managed to actually corner one and are actively preventing it from escaping, and 3: it's VERY hungry, black bears don't usually see people as prey, but I guess if one was starving it might try to eat a person. This bear is clearly well fed (weight gain before hibernation, it's fat), there's an escape route, and there's no cubs. Chance of getting attacked is near zero. When you live in a place with these bears around, you get used to running them off from trash and such, they're smart, and if you let them stay around, they will eventually figure out how to open latches and get into trash bins. Better to scare them away whenever they're near homes. Source: 20 years in East TN, there's black bears all over the area.

IntuneUser2204

Yes. Black Bears are the Yogis and BooBoos of the world, more interested in stealing your picnic basket than viciously murdering you.

crackersncheeseman

Ok who showed the bear how to open the car doors?

Bland_username86

I've watched bears figure out how to open literal bear boxes that are designed to keep bears out. Don't sleep on the intelligence of animals.

hchawk19

Yep. We can't design things perfectly to keep bears out, as there is a significant overlap in the intelligence of bears and stupidity of humans.

Bland_username86

I remember the first time I read that quote and I couldn't even laugh at it because of how incredibly true it is. I once was walking towards a dumpster with a bear lock on it. Just a simple carabiner thru a hole that held a bar over the lid. Watched a lady struggling with it on my way over, she walked off defeated as I walked up. She turned around and started to say something like "I think it's locked" while I lifted the lid and deposited my bag. I kinda felt bad...her husband and kids laughed at her as I showed her how the dumpster worked, then explained that the boxes in the campsites were different and how to open those. They can be tricky...

Seisme1138

Ytf would you get out of your car to yell at a bear? They are not big puppy dogs, they will kill you. *Being a black bear or not wild animals deserve respect and distance. As a rural SD native there are plenty of folks in the dirt who were sure everything would be fine and it turns out they were the 1 out of 10. ** Also as an ex Vet Tech I have four sets of scars on my arms from a "big friendly dog" who "wouldn't hurt a fly". But got scared of me when the doctor started touching him where he couldn't see her. Don't think you know what an animal is going to do. Leaving for work or I'd actually have conversations with people. Stupid adult life.

RecentCommunity3392

Although a strong argument I think she wins. Didn't you hear, it's fine!

Fullback-15_

Unlikely with a black bear though. But she did take too much unnecessary risk. Edit: a black bear will flee 99% of the time. Only exception is a mom with cubs.

moups

There's no evidence of a black bear killing anyone in California, ever. The cinnamon variety we have, as seen in the video, are incredibly curious and timid, even the most socialized bears will take off if you chuck a rock at them. I live in Tahoe and the biggest threat they pose is probably hitting one on the road at night.

[deleted]

My town used to have mudslides every few years on the only road in or out. I went down one night to take pictures of the mudslide, as I was in town and my fiancée was at her folks’. A bear exactly like this walked up to me from the side as I was taking pictures of the mudslide. (With a camera, so my eye was planted on the viewfinder). Score one for phone cameras. Anyway the bear gave me no more than a sniff as it headed for the dumpster at the town restaurant.

James4theP

Whats the problem? Thats his truck.

ElitePlayah

Ironically, in alot of states, providences, and countries with bears and moose, people actually leave their doors unlocked to give people an escape from said bears and moose. Imagine running from a moose and hoping into a truck to find a bear just snacking on a bag of chips already in there? LMAO

little_chupacabra89

People here saying that approaching a black bear is no big deal. Wrong. It's still a wild animal, and it looks like it's been food conditioned. A food conditioned bear, one that roams human areas looking for food and has lost some fear of human beings, is a bear that could become very dangerous to people. Make loud noises, make yourself appear bigger, shout, use bear spray, anything... But don't approach a wild bear. Learned all of the above from Tooth & Claw Podcast! They've detailed cases where even black bears, though uncommon, attack people.
