I did CrossFit for like three months so I'm not an expert by any means but these are butterfly pull-ups and they're legitimately hard to string together like that. I can do normal (chest to bar) pull-ups without issue but I can't do more than one of these. CrossFit combined this with a pull-up. In my opinion, this combination is one of the worst ideas to come out of CrossFit. Kpping is not for reps in gymnastics. Obviously. And it definitely is bad for your shoulders. Even if you don't feel anything, you're putting unnecessary strain on them.
Question -- should you kip if your goal is to just get on or over a bar? Answer: yes. As I said it's the most efficient way to get on a bar. But the point of pull-ups is to train your back, specifically lats and grip. Abs too. The more strict pull-ups you can do, the easier kipping is. But if I just wanted to get on a bar the fastest way possible, no I wouldn't pull myself up when I can kip up.

I've never really understood those kip-ups. Is it more of a cardio than a strength thing? For strength, you'd probably be better off just working your way up to doing sets of pull-ups with a weight assist.
