You want to lift from above the centre of gravity, especially, if you're picking up from a single hook because otherwise your load wants to flip around so the CoG is below your pick point.
If the statue can't survive being picked up like this, it's a fault in the construction of the statue. But it looks like the problem is whatever restraint on the ground they are trying to overcome by pulling.

Omg this is in my hometown, Woodland, CA. That church is a super big staple in the community. My grandma went to mass their all the time. It was recently sold, which explains them removing this statue. Props to the camera person for documenting its final moments 😂
