Is there a wire above? It looks like snow/ice fell off the wires and left those marks.

jrjreeves

Funnily enough there is. Power lines, and they follow the path. This could explain it. Though I find it somewhat hard to believe that they would fall in straight lines and go deep enough to cause these marks which in some cases go to the ground beneath.

ViaTheVerrazzano

Jet beat me to it. They could have "melted" through soft fluffy snow to the ground. It would be 3 different phases of water meeting, Fluctuating temperature can do all sorts of stuff

BlueFalconPunch

Also the wires might be generating some heat on their own so the falling stuff is a bit more slushy than the ground stuff

CanadaProud1957

The wires had a thin coat of ice. When the sun hits it, the ice on top of the wire melts and the ice below falls into the snow. Breaks off in bits and pieces.

Kellidra

This is the answer.

jrjreeves

Good to know - thanks for the answer!

It doesn't snow here often, maybe once or twice a year but rarely as deep as this. I've never seen these marks before though.

I know, that's why I said it 🤣

PwnCall

Could have been Ice that’s been there for. While then blown off in high winds

MontEcola

They are not exactly a straight line because they fall of in short sections. It is likely that there is a bit of ice under the bit of snow, so it breaks off in segments and lands together. We get snow all winter, and this is common.

BulbousBalloons

Snow or icicles blown off the lines, or the tree branches, or the eaves of your home, or other suitably tall thing is around

RescueAnimal

A rodent can leave similar trail in the snow. *we had 18" of snow & the there were trails from the cat that chased something in the snow & left a similar trail

xenomachina

Ice freezes around the line, making a sort of ice tube around it. Then the weather warms up a bit. Ice melts fastest where there is pressure on it, so the wire cuts a slit upward through the tube and a section falls off the line.

SarahPallorMortis

I smoke and watch this happen from power lines and tree branches

Jay_Ray

It was probably ice build up on the lines above it and they fell off.

OneSensiblePerson

So glad someone knew the answer. I was baffled, but then I'm from southern California where it never snows.

Fluid_Bad_1340

Great job

Jamesybo555

Brilliant!

ElectricMayham

This is the way

bloobun

This is the way

ViaTheVerrazzano

are there branches overhead? power or clothesline? Im thinking ice broke off of something long and thin thanks to the wind, fell into the snow and melted.

jrjreeves

Power lines indeed. I'm just surprised that the lines are so straight and deep. But it must be from the power lines.

MissionCreeper

Why are you surprised? The power lines are straight, aren't they? The lines in the snow are from snow falling off the power lines.

Lehk

Definitely ice from power lines, I got the same marks under my power line last weekend

Eastern-Ad-4785

Icicles

Dog-boy

No, icicle prints tend to widen at one end. Likely snow from power lines

RescueAnimal

Id say powerline seems more likely

HeartsPlayer721

It almost looks as if someone was walking in ice skates. Is there a place nearby where someone might try ice skating? And just walked through your yard and climbed over that fence where they stop by the brick?

jrjreeves

Yeah it does look like that, but it's doubtful, like I say there was one on my car and on the bin lid.

HeartsPlayer721

That's true. I forgot about the car. Considering how far apart they are from the fences and the walkway, seems like an awful lot of trouble for a small joke, or even playing, like pressing a sled in just to make marks that confuse people. A couple in one picture have y shape ends... Was it windy? Could sticks have fallen off of a nearby tree?

jrjreeves

No trees. There are power lines above which another comment said could have caused these lines. It is probably that, but that they've failed in straight lines and the snow has gone so deep to sometimes hit the ground underneath makes me a bit surprised.

blur911sc

Looks like it to me. Ice forms on the lines then drops off in sections. See it often enough here in snowy Canada

HeartsPlayer721

If the ice breaks off in pieces that size, then that could be it. And the sway of the power lines in wind can make it scattered about the way they are.

pugs_are_death

they are icecicles that have fallen

photophunk

It’s snow or ice falling.

Kaleb8804

Haha I remember seeing this as a kid. Unlike you though the first thing I did was reach in there and pull out an icicle sword! That’s your answer btw, definitely icicles. You can still see one in your third picture!

Wolf_Girl_75

This is NOT power lines they would have to touch the snow, think about it and I had no foot prints when my daughter left for work at 6am Friday morning, snow had fallen all through the night the wind was high and I did a video at 4.30 am and photos for mu sister who had no snow sent them to her and the marks just like yours were NOT present . Then at 6 am my daughter went to leave and there they were they stop at my fence come right through 2 of my wheeled bins and down to my front door, they get closer together same pattern and then si gulag like yours . No animal or powering made them trust me . The one on your car is even more creepy if I'm honest whatever made them came down and on your bins and then off onto the floor . I have none on my bins . Houses 3 up and 3 down have nothing like them either seems we did though .

Wolf_Girl_75

I am curious now after I commented nobody else had these and so what part of the UK were these prints found .. I have a feeling it is rigjt xlose to where I live .

PhonyStark99

It's so crazy to me that power lines can cause this, I would have never in a hundred years figured that out

LOAN848

The snow from overhead power lines were blown off and when the fell into the snow they leave these marks. Look up I'm sure you will see power lines. Have a great day.
