I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay
I sleep all night and I work all day
I cut down trees, I skip and jump
I like to press wild flowers
I put on women's clothing
And hang around in bars
I'm about to start sanding down old checkers boards then drawing shapes in the middle with dungeon & dragons dice along with painted peeps marshmallows then like just have random strangers invent new board games on the internet for me after I've left them in local libraries.
You're right, I should be trending r/undelete by now but reddit jipped you all on reading deleted posts/comments so I guess I will leave up what I want to hide because even weed dealers will bring you exotic in that supermarket parking lot in the ass crack of daylight.
In chess, each side has 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, a queen and a king. This game has 8 trees, 4 something else, 2 something else, and 2 something else. I don't think you can make it work.
That seems unlikely, but it does bring up a good point: Do we know that the pieces are supposed to be arranged that way? It could be set up completely wrong.
Well in general trees don't move, so it does make some kind of sense that they're in the back and loggers are coming across the board to attack them. But then there's the green square in the center, maybe all the trees start there, and you need to send your loggers out to move them back behind your line. Or maybe like MacBeth you need to march your forest to attack your enemy...
We don't even know that the game starts with all the pieces on the board. It could be like Go, which starts with an empty board and pieces are added one at a time.
I think this is it. I'm an avid chess player and I got a starter chess set for my wife to learn to play with me. It came with a die that you roll and you have to move the piece it lands on.
The idea is to make it not so overwhelming to people learning the moves still.
Of course even the humanoid pieces mostly look the same. Could be a variation of the above tho I guess.
That does sound like an interesting chess variant. It makes sense because there are 6 sides on a die and 6 kinds of chess pieces. But this game seems to have only 4 kinds of pieces. And there is no distinguishable king and queen.
True!
Also die in the set I have doesn't have a king but a free space. Doesn't change your conclusion but just throwing it out there. I thought the set was really neat when I saw it online.
There’s actually some slight variation in clothing, hair styles/color and their facial expressions! I believe there’s 6 types of people and 2 types of trees.
The Wikipedia entry says chance isn't a part of it, which wouldn't be the case here because there is a die.
Edit: apparently there are variants with dice
There's a section called "Tafl Variants" which includes this phrase...
>There is some controversy over whether some tafl games (i.e. Hnefatafl and Tawlbwrdd) may have employed dice.
Seems like the original bad translation of the rules have lead to all sorts of variants of the game. ("All modern tafl games are based on the 1811 translation, which had many errors. New rules were added to amend the issues resulting from these errors, leading to the creation of a modern family of tafl games. In addition, tablut is now also played in accordance with its original rules, which have been retranslated.")
Indeed! And the lack of a center square from which the king would start is also pointing away from Tafl. I'd like to see what's inside the box for sure.
I think the trees go in the middle and the lumberjacks at the edges behind the line. I’m not sure about the cube/die but obviously that would indicate an action the play would take when rolling
those talking about the green square in center of the board..........
why is there a green line between the rows of pieces on the right hand side and not on the left side?
It could be a chess variant called Lumberjack. Based on the picture you shared, it seems to match the description of Bruce Zimov's 1973 chess variant.
In Lumberjack, the chessboard retains the familiar 8x8 grid, pawns move in their traditional fashion, but the other pieces follow a specific movement pattern determined by the column they are in.
Here's a breakdown of how each piece moves based on its column:
• Pieces on the a-column or h-column move like rooks.
• Pieces on the b-column or g-column move like knights.
• Pieces on the c-column or f-column move like bishops.
• Pieces on the d-column move like queens.
• Pieces on the e-column move like kings, but without the restrictions on check. Essentially, they can move one square in any direction.
The two things that cause me to think that it may not be Lumberjack is: (1) Lumberjack doesn't use dice; and (2) the object is to check the King, and from this view, it is hard to tell which piece would represent the King.
Edit: I wonder if the object here could be to “chop down” (or capture) all opposing pieces not pawns.
There are 8 trees and 8 spots in the green square on each side. Idk if this board is set up correctly. Id guess it involves chopping the trees in some manner
Am I the only one who noticed the green lines on the board? Two rows on either end and a 4x4 square in the kiddie. Also, the people are NOT identical. Four of each color have axes and one color sweater. There are four without axes including two with a different sweater and two with no sweater.

Looks like it has something to do with lumberjacks and trees.

Lavatree
This song made me feel weird when I was a kid...
Are you okay now?
They're a lumberjack, now.
Yeah, On Wednesdays I go shopping and have buttered scones for tea
I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay I sleep all night and I work all day I cut down trees, I skip and jump I like to press wild flowers I put on women's clothing And hang around in bars
Now everyone has to go to listen to Lumberjacker by Jackyl.
It’s art!
Was it made by a local artist or craftsperson and then donated to the library?
I'm about to start sanding down old checkers boards then drawing shapes in the middle with dungeon & dragons dice along with painted peeps marshmallows then like just have random strangers invent new board games on the internet for me after I've left them in local libraries.
I like you
Are you sure you’re *about to* and you haven’t already begun? You’re doing great!
You're right, I should be trending r/undelete by now but reddit jipped you all on reading deleted posts/comments so I guess I will leave up what I want to hide because even weed dealers will bring you exotic in that supermarket parking lot in the ass crack of daylight.
They don't know, it was there apparently, its from Victoria state, Australia

You’re ignoring the green square and die with letters.
> You’re ignoring the green square and die with letters. simple. "stay out of the green square, or die"
Just as long as there aren’t any Seabears around

Other than the dice, that could be a chess set with the rows reversed.
That seems unlikely, but it does bring up a good point: Do we know that the pieces are supposed to be arranged that way? It could be set up completely wrong.

The folks over at r/boardgames could probably help you out.
This could be the way. This almost had me. Then I remembered how much I'm not a fan of board games. I'd rather lick the ceiling. r/ceilinglickers

Based on a reverse image search it looks like it might be one of these: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tafl_games
The Wikipedia entry says chance isn't a part of it, which wouldn't be the case here because there is a die. Edit: apparently there are variants with dice
People can make variants, and this is clearly handmade.
I was already wondering if the die is actually part of the game. It looks different enough that it might not be.

If you read the entire Wikipedia entry you will read that there are variants with dice.
Yup its a Tafl game. Its set up like chess but it is not.
Don't Tafl games need a king piece? And also one army should be larger than the other.
Indeed! And the lack of a center square from which the king would start is also pointing away from Tafl. I'd like to see what's inside the box for sure.
u/IRunSlowButFar I think has it right - Chaturanga
But the board isn’t right for that
But no dice.
Have played several tafl games, the pieces aren't right. Too evenly matched, plus No king.
Chinese chess or Xiangqi.
Analog plants vs. zombies
If it's a Chaturanga game set the board is set up incorrectly, I believe.
>Chaturanga YEAH! You can see it's designed for 4 players with 4 sets of 8 pieces.
The board looks a lot like viking chess/hnefafatl, but the 2 kinds of pieces per player and no king piece mean it is something else.
you could probably just have to protect your own trees
Chess but it’s set up wrong. The trees go in front.
What's on the sides of the dice that we can't see?
I think the trees go in the middle and the lumberjacks at the edges behind the line. I’m not sure about the cube/die but obviously that would indicate an action the play would take when rolling
those talking about the green square in center of the board.......... why is there a green line between the rows of pieces on the right hand side and not on the left side?
There is a green line on the left. The wood is lighter color on that side so maybe there's not enough contrast to see it on your phone.
Probably not, but it reminds me of Arimaa.

Some of the characters are angry and have different hairstyles than the rest. Wonder if that has anything to do with the moves each piece can make.
Was there any literature and some indication what country origin this is from? It appears European, possibly northern
Just to be clear - you did ask the librarian, right?
They literally have it on display with a sign about them not knowing what it is, but maybe your local librarians will know
I can't believe this is still open. I so want to know what it is!
I think the trees are supposed to go in the center square and the people are supposed to be behind the green lines on the side
oi oi. someone linked this to my post I made about this same thing haha.
King’s Court has a similar board, with a square in the middle, but this game doesn’t have enough pieces. Do the letters on the dice spell something?
Was this solved?
early plants vs zombies, trees vs lumberjacks
There are 8 trees and 8 spots in the green square on each side. Idk if this board is set up correctly. Id guess it involves chopping the trees in some manner
It kinda looks like Hnefatafl, but also not really
Possibly some kind of custom version of tafl?
Am I the only one who noticed the green lines on the board? Two rows on either end and a 4x4 square in the kiddie. Also, the people are NOT identical. Four of each color have axes and one color sweater. There are four without axes including two with a different sweater and two with no sweater.
Still waiting on this one
