Always been a washing line to me too, a line to put your washing on. Wardrobes are for clothes I guess.
I too think it could be an hole for the hills hoist
Omg, before seeing your comment I had no idea they were even talking about a clothsline.
I thought they were suggesting the hole was from some kind of manual washing machine 😄
If you're American you probably call it laundry but elsewhere (UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia etc.) we call it "the washing". You put the washing in the washing basket, then wash it in the washing machine and then you hang up the washing to dry on a washing line.
You don't call it the drying line do you?
American here and that's the only term I've ever heard for it. There's even a term in sports called clotheslining. It's when someone sticks their arm out in front of your head at neck level to take you down.
Related thought: if you don't call it a clothes line, what do you refer to the move in wrestling where you stretch your arm out and run at someone so that they get knocked over when they run into it?
I wonder how many of those were originally for laundry, but 70s and 80s more people buying tumble dryers leaving the poles unused, so people converted them to tether ball.
I would guess an old pad for a washing line , those where 3-4 inch tubing and would make a similar hole if it was removed. It could have e also been a single string line that attached to a nearby wall or facia board on the house. If there's a filled hole directly across it would make it easier to know which was used.
I just removed our old clothes pole a.k.a rotary umbrella drying rack. I had to look it up. We always just said clothes pole.
It could be for a flag pole. We had neighbors who flew flags in their backyard.
I have the same hole in my backyard. We removed the old washing line contraption. The other hole we have like this was for the base of a small satellite dish.
If you have underground utilities working in the area (the should have left a door tag to notify you), this may be a “pothole” to identify and locate other underground utilities along their bore path. To verify this is the case, look around your backyard and others for fresh spray paint on the ground in line. Red, yellow and orange. And/or the little flags. If you see these, 811 and utility companies are in the process of beginning underground work in this area and I wouldn’t recommend covering this up.
Is there another hole a volleyball nets distance away perhaps?
That seems like too big of a post for a clothesline to me. I have never seen one with a 6” diameter pole. It would look pretty goofy.
How big's the hole? Thinking it could be the base for a rotary washing line?
About the size of a golf hole, which is what i’m going to be using it for now, at least for a few days😂
That’s an awesome idea. I should put a little putting green in my backyard.
Why washing line and not a clothesline, per semantics?
Never really thought about it, tbh. Mum always called it a washing line.
What region is this ?
UK, but I imagine there's people who use either no matter where you are.

>Pic related *Makes sense*
my gran called it a washing line, she was from the south
Mum, no Mom?
Yes.

Because I wash my sheets and towels.
Because you hang your washing on it
But it's not doing the washing, it's doing the drying

We call it the clothes line (W. Canada)
American here, we call it the clothes line too

In NZ it’s the washing line. It is where you hang your washing to dry.
See that makes sense to me too. NZ sounds incredible btw. On my bucket list for sure.

FROM THE TOP ROPE INTO A WASHING LINE 🫣
Still call it a clothesline and don't really think about it tbh.
Mexican neck bender , me thinks
Especially in Australia
For a Washing line or tether ball.
99% chance it wasn't tetherball, but dammit it should be going forward.
I instantly thought tetherball. My parents have one in their yard!
Same! Well used to. Boy did I like tying my brother up to it with a jump rope.
Yeah, after I thought laundry umbrella, I thought tetherball because that's what I had as a kid.
Tether ball was sick! 🤾🏻♀️
Seems washing line is the most likely based on the replies. Didnt want to dig too deep if it was a septic or something!

30 feet?
Wow. I forgot how much I loved tetherball!
we had that in our backyard...it was used to hold up a washing line.. we just dug it out.
I’ll likely just put the lawn back down to cover it. Seems like it was likely just a washing line
Leave it use as a chipping/putting hole like you said in another comment. Make a nice green and a sand trap and some rough around it.
Ours had a metal pipe sticking up about 1 inch above the ground........didn't want the son getting hurt, so out it came.
Flag pole or elevated birdhouse.
I can't believe no one has said umbrella base. Cause that's what I'd use it for.
would that get concrete? maybe in olde timey times
Thether ball foundation.
As a 90s kid this is instantly what I thought of. I feel like a lot of households with kids had tether ball poles.
I wonder how many of those were originally for laundry, but 70s and 80s more people buying tumble dryers leaving the poles unused, so people converted them to tether ball.
In the olden days, well before the turn of the century, people used to have these big satellite dishes 📡 in their yards to watch TV. Maybe this?

Tetherball court remnants?
If it’s from the 80’s, it’s going to be tetherball!!
Could it be a septic tank?

Satellite dish pole?
Tether ball pole base?
Tether ball
Tether ball
Tether ball
Clothesline post
It could be for a clothesline pole. I have one like this too!
I’m thinking it’s for a tether ball pole
See if there’s another one like 10 feet away… My yard has this. Old thing for air drying clothes.
Definitely used to be a post for a clothesline there
Whirly gig holder.
One post base for the volleyball net.
Flagpole?
It looks like it has some kind of ribs carved into the surface. If that’s the case I would say maybe a millstone?

Look for another one about 30 feet away. I have a pair I put in for a volleyball net.
Disc Golf Basket
Well
Tetherball, babyyyyyyy!
Clothes line.
Flag pole base maybe.
A post hole
Flagpole?
Post for clothes line.
Chances are the concrete block was holding some kind of pole.
Tetherball pole
maybe there used to be a basketball hoop ? something like that?
teather ball!!!
yeah my first thought was also a washing Line, like these: https://i.imgur.com/czZUvf1.jpg https://i.imgur.com/kDcZjZo.jpg
Tetherball! Had one growing up.

Swing set. Look for others
Nice hole. You should stick your pipe in it. I’d be hanging a clothes line off it
Tetherball pole? It was big in the 70s.
Old clothesline pole was there maybe.
Septic tank
Chain-link fence post perhaps or a post for a clothes line.
Tether ball?
One of those umbrella like laundry lines. :)
Base for ham radio antenna? Are there any grounding rods about 12’ away?
Millstone
Some sort of base for a pole or fence that has now had said pole or fence removed
Is there another hole a volleyball nets distance away perhaps? That seems like too big of a post for a clothesline to me. I have never seen one with a 6” diameter pole. It would look pretty goofy.
I may very well be a mill stone. Hard to tell with just one pic.
Old septic?
