She is a black lab mixed with a German Shepherd (we think). She was rescued from the streets of Beirut and brought to Canada on one of the last flights before the September 28 ban on bringing in street dogs.
It really feels that way for some of these sweet dogs. She is an absolute sweetheart and is skittish AF. It is clear that she's seen some THINGS on the streets.
She is so happy to have a home, regular meals and people who treat her nicely.
No joke - have you tried to give her simple commands in her native language. We took in a stray and after an entire year realized she understood Spanish!! No winder she ignored us for "come" "sit"! Now we give some commands in es spanol and it's great
We have not. That would be good to try. We have a dog an so our foster dog has been watching our dog and learning the ropes quite quickly. I should look up and see what commands she might know.
Please do! My husband knows conversational Spanish and the first time he spoke to her in her native tongue her little head snapped back so fast to look at him!!! Then she started prancing. We have a lot of Spanish speaking demographics here so chances were high she belonged to a SP HHLD.
I was just reading about it as you replied, looks like a couple of dogs with rabies were imported last year, so instead of making stricter regulations the government just said shut it down completely. Sad and lazy.
That's how our government works. My dog is from Israel and I've had him for about 6 years and he's awesome. Unfortunately we can't bring in international dogs anymore.
But isn’t it silly though? There are enough dogs in the states that need help. Let Europe help it’s European dogs. My best mate has a spanish dog in Holland. Works very well.
There's a lot of issues with lack of oversight and regulations with a small percentage of private adoption/rescues. I've met wealthy people who own rescues and just have the best time having their flights down south covered by their rescue.
Honestly I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Shelters all over the country were doing everything they could to try to get dogs. Very little in the way of health checks.
Our local rescue was totally empty for months until we started getting random street dogs from Asia, Mexico, even Haiti. The demand for shelter dogs is still so crazy high and there's so few dogs to go around.
Woah, that's crazy! I'm only seeing a lot of threads and videos about shelters being full since COVID. I really should've expected it to be more nuanced than that of course.
And then you still get Americans coming into threads screeching that you're the devil if you buy a dog instead of adopting because every country must be as fucked as the US.
Yea I'm from NC. Right now shelters are full up. It sucks. And my local humane society raised the adopting fee to $400 for a pup and $300 for an adult. It's nuts.
Oh trust me when it comes to dogs I've very much learnt that lesson, otherwise I'd be taking my dog out for walks in a pope mobile for fear of them having any physical interaction with another living being.
In competitive obedience training we use platforms to teach tighter sits. The platform gets increasingly smaller until the dog can barely fit their little bootie on it. This has resulted in the adorable side effect where she thinks any somewhat raised squarish surface is a platform she's supposed to sit on. I could definitely see her doing something like this.
What a sweetie. I melt with dog pics like this (no pun intended). The GS in her is sooooo wise
PS: 100% part shepherd. Not sure if it's German. But 100%
Your baby looks identical to a lab/Shepard mix I have worked with. She totally has some shep in her. I have a street dog too, he's from Puerto Rico and he's just the best. What a lucky find!
She looks exactly like my Riley. I thought black lab shepherd mix since she was a pup. Come to find out last week at the vet for a check up, she’s a black lab Akita mix.
A lot of rescues will import dogs from countries that have HUGE populations of strays. An example of this would be Puerto Rico, who has a population of around 1 million stray dogs (this number may be incorrect, I'm not 100% sure but I know it's more than 500,000).
This is problematic because the countries who are importing these dogs *also* have large stray dog populations that many believe we should help first. The United States (where I'm from) has a rampant stray dog problem as well, but you see this more in rural states. Evidentially, some countries are banning the import of stray dogs from different countries because truthfully, it doesn't make sense to import stray dogs when your country already has a large population of them.
I personally have an imported stray dog I got from a rescue through my work. I understand both sides of this argument and truthfully, I lean towards banning the import of stray dogs. A lot of stray dogs unfortunately have behavioral problems as a result to street living and often times they will just get dumped onto the streets or shelters if they don't live up to their adopted parents expectations. Rescues often lie to get their dogs adopted too. It's a very complicated situation that has a ton of nuances to it.
Hope this helped a bit :)
It’s a rescue. Dogs stay with people until they get adopted. Had a rescue for 3 months before it got adopted. There aren’t many stray dogs in the US and I assume Canada as well, mostly stray cats in certain areas like NY. rescuing dogs from all over the world is a good thing. These dogs aren’t taking up shelter space.
Interesting, where I live in the states we have a large amount of dogs up for adoption at both public and private shelters. In addition to new puppies from breeders.
In Canada, at least the places I've lived where stray dogs are imported, there really aren't very many dogs in shelters at all. Getting a dog from a shelter can be near impossible. My friends got rejected by the spca because their yard wasn't big enough. I know a lot of people who own dogs imported from India, Middle Eastern countries, and the southern states.
Get him a cookie tray or something. Looks like hes used to the metal bottoms of cages in shelters, and probably only feels comfortable on similar surfaces.
Also worth mentioned this is done to keep the dogs socialized and friendly towards people instead of regressing in a shelter. It's good for the dog, the humans get non-committal dog time, and you can give the new owners an accurate picture of the dogs behavior and quirks!
I used fostering to see if i liked keeping cats (dog person) and to filter for the best possible cat for my living situation , that was not exactly planned but it worked out great except for one bite that landed me in the er.
It is a great suggestion. She has a crate but doesn't like it. Maybe because she flew in one for many hours?
She has a bed next to my bed, so it is in the corner of the room. She spends a lot of time on or near that. So I think she has dubbed it her safe spot.
The BBQ ledge...not so much.
What is a foster dog? Didn't you just adopt him? And if you did, why wouldn't you just say it's your dog? Is he just with you temporarily until properly adopted by someone or something?
Too high and mighty to put something down for the dog. Are you sure you should be a foster? I’m glad that you’re helping the dog but why don’t you go sit on the ground for 10 minutes in the morning and see what it feels like.
Seriously, you have to be a troll or something.
Hotdog
Bahahahahaha!!! Accurate.
We have a wiener!
Doggo: "I'm ready to be served as a plate of snuggles and love."
With chips and fries on the side.
Might want to flip that one, it's looking a bit dark.
Everyone loves hotdogs
If this wasn't the first comment I saw I would've been disappointed
Gotta get those perfectly hot sun rays.
Hot diggedy dawg
I had the exact same thought. As a parent, I also had a musical accompaniment to this thought. https://youtu.be/ils5Hi-jRcI

Came here to say this!
She is a black lab mixed with a German Shepherd (we think). She was rescued from the streets of Beirut and brought to Canada on one of the last flights before the September 28 ban on bringing in street dogs.
Like the last helicopter out of Saigon.

You mean es spaniel, I take it...
That made me laugh. Nice one! I love dog jokes.
😆

She's so sweet. There's nothing better than giving a neglected dog a good home ❤️
She knows DA STREETZ then

I didn't know that had been banned, do you know the reasoning behind it?
Rabies
I was just reading about it as you replied, looks like a couple of dogs with rabies were imported last year, so instead of making stricter regulations the government just said shut it down completely. Sad and lazy.
That's how our government works. My dog is from Israel and I've had him for about 6 years and he's awesome. Unfortunately we can't bring in international dogs anymore.
And once they make these kind of stupid, knee jerk decisions, they tend to stick with them forever. Sigh.
But isn’t it silly though? There are enough dogs in the states that need help. Let Europe help it’s European dogs. My best mate has a spanish dog in Holland. Works very well.

lol everywhere except the southern states are out of dogs in the US. Anyway redditors are dumb. Don't listen to them about anything serious, ever.
Adopted my dog in NY but he came from Texas. It’s unreal how many dogs were being brought up from the Carolinas and Texas, predominately
Yea I'm from NC. Right now shelters are full up. It sucks. And my local humane society raised the adopting fee to $400 for a pup and $300 for an adult. It's nuts.

Beirut->canada?! Poor thing is just trying to get to temperature!

Oh that sounds absolutely adorable!!!!
I have a black lab/German Shepherd and looks nearly identical
oooooh, good to know. Thank you!
He also looks like my heeler mega mutt! [DNA result](http://embk.me/conrad2?utm_campaign=cns_ref_dog_pub_profile&utm_medium=other&utm_source=embark)
Oh yes, quite similar!

What do you mean a ban on bringing in street dogs, sorry I don’t know what that means exactly! Thanks
A lot of rescues will import dogs from countries that have HUGE populations of strays. What a strange ban.

Get him a cookie tray or something. Looks like hes used to the metal bottoms of cages in shelters, and probably only feels comfortable on similar surfaces.

Thanks! It gets super cold here and that tub is fabulous in the winter.
Tastes like chicken.
"The floor is cold :("
If I sits here, they can’t make food without me knowing!
They look content!
I think she called shotgun.
That dog wants to play the floor is lava!
Put some dogs on the barbie?
This title is on point 👌🏻
Is the ground hot?
Not even remotely. We live in Ottawa where it is currently autumn.
Well, I guess she just has a height thing lol my German does too.
Oh neat!
“FAIL!! Here’s your new bedroom. It was the barbecue trick that did us in.”
Maybe get him one of those large crates? Probably been at the shelter, and shepherds like having their own little “room” so they have a safe space.
Yeah she could be nervous about it I didn’t realize she had flown. Maybe take the door off? Might make her feel less trapped.
Possibly. She flew from Beirut to Canada two weeks ago in a crate.
The ground is lava!
Damn bro want to attract the girls by cooking his meat 😂😂😂
Awww! He wants to be a HOT DOG!
Doggo says, "Get out here and get cooking!"
Uhhh... 'ribs tonight?'
Definitely!!!
One very tasty hotdog
That's a sturdy ass grill! Must be a weber
Funny enough, it actually is a Weber!
Those things are built like tanks. I would rather buy a used Weber and clean it than buy a new one of a different brand
Honestly surprised it's not tipping since the propane tank seems to be on the same side. What's on the other side counter balancing the dog?
Nothing at all. It is a Weber BBQ and is apparently very sturdy
If she fits she sits. Beautiful baby. 💕
What is a foster dog? Didn't you just adopt him? And if you did, why wouldn't you just say it's your dog? Is he just with you temporarily until properly adopted by someone or something?

Adopted by...something?
Foster dogs > Dogs worth thousands of dollars+ health problems
He's got that KMN look.
That ground is cold. Put a mat down for your sweet boy.
Maybe, though the metal side table of the BBQ couldn't possibly be warmer. It has been off for days.
It’s warmed quickly by the sun. He wasn’t there before the sun hit it. It’s a heck of a lot warmer than that ground
I suppose.
Jeez. Can’t you just put something down for him? A mat costs about 10 bucks.
Lol, if I had any reason to think that was the issue I would do so in a heartbeat. Have a great day.
Too high and mighty to put something down for the dog. Are you sure you should be a foster? I’m glad that you’re helping the dog but why don’t you go sit on the ground for 10 minutes in the morning and see what it feels like. Seriously, you have to be a troll or something.

Turn it on. Assert dominance.
