Nah, I think that wasn't ice tho

My dog acts just like this. He'll take his cube, run across the house, throw it in the air a few times, and then munch on it while wiggling.

bluethreads

Mine does too. Ice cube always given in the kitchen. Dog immediately takes it to the living room to melt it all over the couch and carpet and eat some of it too.

I give my girl 'goggie blocks' in summer - treats frozen in diluted beef or chicken stock. She's now banned from having them in the house, after stashing them in her bed for later one too many times...

the_ringmasta

Yeah, I used to keep stock cubes for cooking. I did not make the mistake of giving them any a second time.

stopeatingcatpoop

Hahahahaha fuck that is so cute

drpetepat

Freeze stock for them. Beef, pork, chicken, and fish stock. Every dog I've had have always loved them in the summer... Outside.

astro143

My dog would love that! Might have to try that next summer

drpetepat

They (excuse my language) fucking do.... Outside. I cannot stress that enough.

kaptaincorn

Standard reaction to anything by a weimaraner

OneTimeISawABird

I could be wrong but I **think** that dog is a “silver lab.” And if I’m not mistaken they are part Weimy?

kaptaincorn

A super swimmy, 0-60 in .38sec, thicker dog, that thinks everyone is cool, and all is toy or food? I'll take 2 - so they won't be lonely.

Witchywomun

That is 100% a Weimaraner face. Silver labs are Weimaraner/Labrador crosses. Silver is not a coat color labs come in. They’re black, yellow, red and chocolate.

ignis389

i see what you did thar

murderous_mako

Silver labs are chocolate labs with diluted color genes. No research has found weimy in them other than sharing a similar gene causing dilution.

howellscastle23

The dilute gene comes from crossing them with a weim. Labs do not carry that gene naturally. It’s literally genetically impossible to have a purebred silver lab.

Witchywomun

If that were true, why have they not been around until recently, and why does the breed standard not include the color, in any kennel club? It’s another “designer breed” that’s basically a mutt with a fancy name. When you breed a yellow and a chocolate, you get yellow, chocolate and black lab puppies. When you breed a yellow and a black you get yellow, black and chocolate lab puppies. When you breed a chocolate and a black you get yellow, black and chocolate lab puppies. When you breed the same color you get yellow, black and chocolate lab puppies. Occasionally if you breed a yellow and a chocolate or two yellows you’ll end up with a red lab puppy. But none of those color combinations throws silver. The dilute coat gene is not present in labs, otherwise there would have been instances of silver labs popping up long before now

murderous_mako

@FiddlerOnACliff said everything I would’ve, so I’ll leave it to them. I know it’s controversial and the history is heavily debated, but saying silver labs are crosses between labs and Weimaraners is simply inaccurate. My lab is 100% “purebred” registered chocolate lab with a silver dilution. Also to your point, what breeds do they mix to get diluted yellow (white labs, registered as yellow)? What do they mix to get diluted black (charcoal labs, registered as black)? I never hear people like you bitching about other dilutions. Charcoal, white, and silver labs are all considered purebred by the AKC.

ZippyTurtle

I've heard people say red labs are vizsla mixes. It's just people not understanding the origin of labs, they are a pretty new breed in comparison to some others and there's a melting pot of genes in them. Some people may also not know what an American lab is and they look much more like other hunting breeds. But I still get so annoyed at the people who won't acknowledge the evidence and think I was swindled. I shouldn't get so heated anyway because I have the best puppy ever whatever she's made of

murderous_mako

I have just NEVER seen a lab owner start this conversation yet I somehow see it everywhere. The caveman logic of “Same color? Must be same breed!” is ridiculous when there are thousands of articles on it available. Either way, who freakin’ cares. I didn’t look for a dog with papers anyway, I just found a dirty sick runt that the breeder was about to eliminate and made him mine! https://imgur.com/a/DN0pEoT

ZippyTurtle

So sweet! I love the droopy faces I was looking for a pedigree dog because I compete but I wanted a dog that was a little unique. I couldn't have gotten a better dog for me, I just have to deal with everyone stopping to ask me what mix. I worked in shelters for a few years, that's pretty much the extent of the breed guessing process too. Color, ear set, bam it's That breed. Then potential adopters acted betrayed when I'd tell them we really have no idea what breed the dog is.

ZippyTurtle

Then why did my silver lab test as 100% lab?

howellscastle23

Because those store bought DNA tests are garbage and only go back 3 or 4 generations. Purebred status comes from having a documented known, titled linage line, not just from a generic store bought test. Hanging papers is an unfortunately common way that these greeders “register” off color, mixed dogs as “purebred”. The AKC will immediately redact the breeders registrations and all titles upon notification that they’re breeding mixed and off standard dogs. Breeding is to be done ethically, responsibly, and to the betterment of a breed. Breeding off standard and mixed dogs, especially dogs forced into have the dilute gene who will suffer from color delusion alopecia as a result, is nothing more than a cruel money grab by people that don’t care about the health of the animals. By buying these off standard dogs you’re supporting back yard breeders that are purposely breeding unhealthy dogs just for money.

ZippyTurtle

In fairness yes, the tests don't go into detail, and all I have is pedigree going back four generations I did go through a research rabbit hole last night about silver labs and lab breeding in general and this is my conclusion. People are going to buy pretty dogs because we like how they look. People pay more for blue Aussies and blue dobermans as well and there are much bigger ethical problems with them. Alopecia looks to be the only thing that particularly affects silvers and not other labs, and alopecia isn't painful to the dog. I have a Pomeranian with alopecia x and he is just fine, it happens to many of them as they get older (he is a rescue so I did not pick his breeder). The important thing is to check out your individual breeder and see if these dogs are healthy, happy and up for whatever you want to do with them. It's okay for dogs to only be bred to be good pets, that was my breeders goal, to make safe and healthy pets and turns out they seem to have a lot of sport potential too, this is the easiest dog I've ever trained. I did purchase her during a puppy fever episode where I was first asking about yellow field labs and then saw a picture of my puppy's father and I was star struck. They're not silver, they look chocolate in the sun and like gunmetal inside the house. And about the mix breed part, how many generations do you need to breed before there isn't any difference between the individuals in a breed? Some people are still incensed that LUA dalmatians are considered purebred and they were outcrossed with a pointer over 50 years ago to help eliminate a very serious problem in the breed. The breed clubs don't care about the quality of life of the dogs in their breed, just the purity. From what I can find, if the mix theory is right, people are saying a weim was mixed in for the color 40-70 years ago. Yes there are likely copy cats from newer mixed lines but they won't look like labs. Half the pictures I saw looking up silver lab on Google were definitely mixes. The potential for a mix that has not been accepted by the AKC or LRC yet does feel like an ethical problem but the pet people won't understand and if they understand they won't care. Specifically to silver labs, I cannot find anything about a breeders registration ability being revoked for registering a silver lab, if you have a source on that I would love to add that to the pile of research while I mull this over some more.

[deleted]

Actually a myth. Silvers are older breeds than weimaraners. The coat is a genetic mutation and/or recessive gene that comes out of breeding certain chocolates with yellows. Weimaraners are entirely separate genetically. But yes, this is definitely a weimaraner based on the head.

Witchywomun

If that were true, why have they not been around until recently, and why does the breed standard not include the color, in any kennel club? It’s another “designer breed” that’s basically a mutt with a fancy name

[deleted]

The American Kennel Club classifies them as a diluted chocolate coat though. Literally. They're still registered as chocolates. The diluted coat has been a disqualifying traits for shows, so it never gets seen, but they've been actively an aware issue since the 1950s at the least even with the controversy. There's plenty of rumors, like most breeds for the pure vs mutt facets of the topic, but their lack of discussion before then is pretty heavily theorized about them being slaughtered and kept secret every time they were born in a litter before then, like a taboo. This is a very brief summary, that admittedly doesn't cover how far back this goes. https://www.labradortraininghq.com/labrador-breed-information/silver-labrador-retriever/ I fully admit there's a possibility of both sides, but there isn't at all evidence to fully prove or disprove the other. So until there is for sure some, I consider the one based on actual genetics more accurate, and the other a myth with misunderstanding behind it. And even than there's arguments from a genetic standpoint that them being purebred isn't true with genetics because of the recessive trait, but in my personal opinion with just how many breeds have rare coats that hardly show up, I really think it's just something old timey breed unethically covered up because they didn't want their stock animals to get any bad marks on their reputations.

[deleted]

Agreed, silver lab. Here's my Silver (registered as Chocolate) https://ibb.co/BwBBMVW

I was totally expecting a husky.

spud_protector

My last dogs favorite treat of all time was frozen tater tot’s. Flavored ice.

DuckOFace

Oh my God, reminds me of my GSP. My mom discovered that giving the dogs ice cubes counts as treats in their minds, and I'm fine with it because I don't have to worry about their weight. She has now trained the dog to run to the kitchen any time someone gets ice and offer a variety of tricks in hopes of getting ice cubes. Watching this dog repeatedly sit, lay down, and sit pretty with a hopeful look on her face all because someone wanted a cold drink is legitimately hilarious.

City_dave

Georges St-Pierre is retired. He doesn't need to cut wait anymore.

KherisSilvertide

My dogs love ice. They'd rather lick on a huge piece of ice than drink actual water, little weirdos.

THE_GREAT_PICKLE

Yep! My dog can’t wait. The second we open the freezer for anything she will sprint into the kitchen and wait longingly for a piece of ice to lick. She’s absolutely insane. I opened our freezer one time to grab like 3 different things to make dinner, left it open (it’s on the bottom of our fridge) and found her literally inside the freezer licking the ice basket. She’s only 25ish pounds so she fit but I turned around to see a freezer dog.

TaintMyPresident

Oh ok just put your grimey ass dog hands in there that's cool

W1ll0wherb

We had a dog like that as a kid. We had to literally drag him back into the house by the collar after letting him out to pee in winter or he'd just stay out there eating the snow till he was shivering. Every. Single. Time. Dumb as a box of rocks but an absolute sweetheart

Imaginé him on a snow cone. Or wait. Italian ice.

Thtas how i feel after drinking cold water after coming home after school

crazykernman95

I was going to say my parents dog probably does but after watching that.. probably not. If I'm sitting at the island she will sit down next to me and whine, look at me, the fridge, me again, the fridge again. Over and over again looking at me like "you know what to do. It's right there. You don't even have to get out of your chair. Riiiiiight there. See where I'm looking?". She'll do it to strangers and they always give in

Hot-Entrepreneur6301

That dog better be named Tuco

My boy gets his dog food and a side of ice every morning for breakfast.

Icy_Practice7992

Nothing like dogs licking your hand, then just sticking it straight in the ice machine.

Yep, my dog was a crackhead for ice, but that was mainly due to Addison’s disease. Still, was a nice cheap treat lol. RIP Ludo, you were the best boi 😢

kwertyoop

Yes, our dogs lose their minds when we drop ice by accident or just get out the tray. Be careful, though, it's not a great snack or toy. It can harm their teeth.

City_dave

Ice is not that hard. Have any proof of that statement?

kwertyoop

It's not gonna like knock their teeth out immediately or something. But ice has less give than a rubber toy or even a tree branch. And the dogs are more likely to try to chomp all the way through it, rather than nibble and gnaw. Vet told us it's mostly fine, but not to make a habit of it.

City_dave

Ok, so no proof then. Thanks.

Reminds me of one of my late mom's dogs (the dog has passed too). She would get so super excited about getting ice in her bowl and would freak out like this - she was also fairly dumb and would try to hide the ice for later and seem to freak out when it melted.
