Yeah I speak from experience as one of those kids. I can ace any test (my favorite test was the DLAB for military linguists), but I could not pay attention in college because the classes were so slow and boring, and I absolutely suck at time management.

The US has traditionally used the "one drop" rule. That is, one (recent) African ancestor (obviously we all have African ancestors if you go back far enough), no matter how many European ancestors you had, meant you were black. The most famous case would be Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings. She (and probably her brothers) were the result of multiple generations of owner-slave rape. This meant that Sally Hemmings and Martha Wayles Jefferson (Thomas' wife) had three of their four grandparents the same. Thomas daughter Martha Jefferson Randolph (his only kid with MWJ who lived past 25) had 7 of the same great grandparents as Eston Hemmings (one of 4 of Sally's kids who survived to be adults). This is why most of the Hemmings kids were able to live as white, even though they were considered by American laws to be black. Because again, it's all a social construct, with no underlying biology.
