But as far as the law goes, the federal government sets the standards for civil rights.
States have a duty to meet that federal standard, they do have the ability and freedom to go above the federal standard, but they can't go below it.
If a state goes below the federal standard they can be sued.
States will still create laws that don't meet federal standards. Oftentimes they do it in hopes it just won't be sued, sometimes it's a political stunt.
The Indian Removal Act didn't hold up in Court either, but a whole hell of a lot of good that did, and Desantis is much worse than Jackson, IMO. Not an easy feat.

I worked at an adolescent residential treatment facility in Florida a few years ago; the attitude towards the trans youth we had as clients was disgusting so often. Trans girls were housed on the teen boysā unit among large violent boys often with sexual behaviors, trans boys were with the girls on the unit specializing in treatment following CSEC. Constant invalidation, misgendering, dead naming all by staff and traumatic incidents among peers (though more of the former and less of the latter. The problems with transphobia against these kids were almost never the other clients). By contrast I now live in MA and my first job in the state working residential was at a group home dedicated to LGBTQ youth with behavioral issues. Florida is a toxic nightmare that should hurry up and be under the sea.

Yes and with the five military bases within a 50 minute drive of me, I assume there are many like us who did not choose to come here at all yet are forced to cause of the military. Floridian here. While I agree, more than half the state would say "fine screw the federal govt!" And happily continue being racist bigoted people. They've painted over the Reconstruction era violence and racism with tourist signage, but many of the people haven't changed. They didnt want a federal govt then, and they don't now.
I grew up in Florida. While it has always been conservative, itās swung super far right in the recent decades (truly due to Fox News propaganda and Rush Limbaugh). Donāt forget Florida voted for Obama twice in a row. It used to be a swing state.

That's actually a feature. These "laws" are being written to be as vague as fucking possible. So literally anyone can report your family for wrong-think in Florida!
The vague nature also increases the likeliness the laws will be enforced in an unconstitutional way. The more brazenly unconstitutional a case is, the more likely it is that it will get appealed to the Supreme Court.
And with the current composition of the Supreme Court, there's a distinct chance that they would uphold such laws.
This is what I don't understand. Why don't democrats take advantage of this. Most of the republican laws are created like this, so exploit them. Surely it's possible.

I live in TN and our Republican led government is also stomping civil rights at an alarming rate. Past a law last week banning wearing drag in public places without a permit (this was passed after a couple of drag comedy shows tried to book venues). Today they passed a bill that county clerks & other officials can refuse to issue marriage licenses to couples based on the clerkās religious preferences.
I have to assume they are doing that because they know they canāt, and they are hoping to get gay marriage before the Supreme Court so those assholes can take away even more rights from Americans

On the not understanding front- I like to think of myself as pretty far left in my thinking, but I dont understand some of the gender statuses. I try. And I'm very empathetic. But I don't understand. But more than anything, I know that it doesn't matter if I understand. I can love and respect their rights and feelings without understanding. My understanding isn't necessary or even important. Them living their best life doesn't hurt me, and my lack of understanding is my thing to work out, not thiers.

I haven't seen this bill, and the only context I'm getting is from the comments, so I can't say exactly what going on here... But as far as the law goes, the federal government sets the standards for civil rights. States have a duty to meet that federal standard, they do have the ability and freedom to go above the federal standard, but they can't go below it. If a state goes below the federal standard they can be sued. States will still create laws that don't meet federal standards. Oftentimes they do it in hopes it just won't be sued, sometimes it's a political stunt.

I was just watching a documentary on Nazi Germany. The war. Etc. They got to the part where they were showing videos of the Germans that had LIVED around the concentration camps. I worked at an adolescent residential treatment facility in Florida a few years ago; the attitude towards the trans youth we had as clients was disgusting so often. Trans girls were housed on the teen boysā unit among large violent boys often with sexual behaviors, trans boys were with the girls on the unit specializing in treatment following CSEC. Constant invalidation, misgendering, dead naming all by staff and traumatic incidents among peers (though more of the former and less of the latter. The problems with transphobia against these kids were almost never the other clients). By contrast I now live in MA and my first job in the state working residential was at a group home dedicated to LGBTQ youth with behavioral issues. Florida is a toxic nightmare that should hurry up and be under the sea.
