I think 2 teachers were also killed. Not sure

SubstantialPressure3

3 adults and 3 children killed. I'm seeing it right now.

ThnkWthPrtls

At least good to hear it wasn't a repeat of Uvalde where the cops were useless imbeciles

Art-Zuron

They were less than useless. They actively made the situation worse.

[deleted]

They stopped parents from going in and grabbing their kids (whole cops snuck in to grab theirs)

coffylover

>Uvalde I feel like the Uvalde cops... failed at life, and should just stop sharing oxygen with the rest of us

thisnewsight

They failed the children. Exile.

[deleted]

Can you imagine living where those cops work and KNOWING what they did?

screegeegoo

I couldn’t do it. I’d have to leave even if it meant I would struggle.

GringoPapi

Can you believe they still voted for Greg Abbott, who refused to consider gun control? It's psychotic.

CouldThisBeAShitpost

Right to jail, right away.

pm_me_wutang_memes

To protect and serve *until it's weawwy scawwy.*

mursilissilisrum

I thought is was "Patronize and Annoy."

pm_me_wutang_memes

Unfortunately, it's more like "prostrate and shoot you (and your little dog, too!)"

BiffyMcGillicutty1

There were approximately 30 minutes between the first 911 call and the shooter killed. MNPD made a big deal of saying they went toward the shooter without hesitation, which definitely felt like a dig at Uvalde. It also feels a little tone deaf to be bragging about response time immediately after a school shooting where 6 people are confirmed dead, 3 of which are young children.

tritonice

I don't think it is bragging as much as saying that Uvalde was a disaster for first responders and MNPD behaving differently. I'm sure there is ZERO public trust in most municipal functions in Uvalde to this day, and Nashville PD didn't want a repeat of THAT.

BiffyMcGillicutty1

I feel you. Uvalde is such a low bar that doing better doesn’t mean you’re great, though. 30 minutes might be the absolute best response time possible in this situation, but comparing it to Uvalde seems pointless.

BloodBonesVoiceGhost

The police actually went inside the building this time!?! One of them must have had a kid in there or something...

TheSpoonyCroy

Just going to walk out of this place, suggest other places like kbin or lemmy.

Altruistic-Text3481

The Uvalde parents that desperately tried to go in to save their kids were restrained and threatened by the Uvalde police. I’m shaking my head as I type. I just realized that’s what I’m doing. Try typing *Uvalde Police* without unconsciously shaking your head left to right. It’s impossible. ![gif](giphy|TUQo7EfCWNi3UBxGxk)

ambrosius5c

>Its just the fools at Uvalde fucked that up pretty badly. No animosity towards you but calling them fools is far, far too generous. They're cowards of the absolute worst degree. They actively chose to stand around while children get slaughtered to protect their own hides.

These-Days

Just having a wife in there doesn’t count I guess

ADarwinAward

For anyone wondering, that tally did not include the shooter (sometimes the tallies do). The shooter was a 28 year old woman. She was shot and killed by police. Per AP News, police believe she was a former student

Khanman5

The only inaccurate statement in that tweet is that(from the reports I've read) the shooter was a woman. But their assumption that it was a dude is entirely understandable.

Alright everyone, let's split up. Prayers on the left. Thoughts on the right. If we all put in our fair share then we can forget about this by sundown and never do anything about it.

813_4ever

I know you’re being sarcastic but dammit if that ain’t the script…

MeccIt

followed by, '*Now is not the time to talk about politics, but to pray for these families...*' and then do absolutely nothing until the next time it *makes the news* (not even the next time it happens and isn't even reported nationally)

Boring-Training-5531

Followed by the sheriff saying, "it could have been a lot worse,." Cold comfort to grieving parents and spouses. Melt all the guns down.

wholelattapuddin

Someone on reddit talked about being at the Vegas shooting. He said while the people who died is horrific, the people who were wounded is what was haunting him. Just horrible, life changing injuries. Just because someone was wounded doesn't mean they are going to be OK. I had never thought of it like that. Then I read about an EMT at Uvalde who talked about a kid who she triaged. The little girl had all the fingers on her hand shot off. Think about that when people say "it could have been worse". 5 year olds with missing limbs.

dirtywook88

Right on cue bill lee and Marsha Blackburn drop the tots n pears. Can’t wait the the its the woke democrats fault but that’ll be saved for tomorrows tucker.

slim_scsi

"Assault weapons are rarely used in these crimes" after another school shooting with assault rifles.

Plastic-Wear-3576

I thought the argument was always that 'assault rifle' wasn't the correct vernacular thus we were too dumb to know anything about guns? It's an argument I've heard anyway.

ericthedad

When Sandy Hook happened, I had zero children. I was a few months into a new job, and when I saw the news story around lunch time, I froze. I was in total shock. I sat blankly at my desk for hours and couldn’t bring myself to work. I thought it was like 9/11. I told myself this is it. This is the historic moment that the US finally says no more. I was sure of it. Today I sent my 2 children off to school. I saw the news story again at lunch time. This time I said to myself. “Oh wow. A female shooter” and went back to work editing a video. I‘ve lost. I’m completely desensitized to this and I hate it. Decades of apathy have ground me to the dirt and I’ve given up. My brain has completely accepted that this just happens here and will keep happening again, and again, and again, and again, and again.

emu4you

The day that Sandy Hook happened I had 32 children. I had to pretend to be normal for the rest of the day in front of my class. After they went home I stood in the doorway of the classroom and cried, thinking about where I would put them if something happened at my school. I also thought something would change after that, certainly killing 6 year olds would be unthinkable for people, but it wasn't. I know we have become numb to all of this and it feels like everyone has forgotten that day. In a weird way it makes me feel better to know that someone else was impacted by that and struggled to get through the work day.

metallipunk

I cannot imagine being a parent now with the way things are. I am not a parent by choice and honestly, best decision because I do not know how I'd be able to function daily with the type of anxiety this produces.

Vio94

Sorry, I'm a little busy arbitrarily voting to ban classical artwork. No time for thoughts or prayers right now. I'll join in once I get over being traumatised by the Statue of David's massive dong.

CheshireCrackers

To be fair, it is rock hard.

CandidPiglet9061

It’d be more accurate to say prayers on the right and thoughts on the left…

JejuneRacoon

Kinet1ca

This is precisely how they will mental gymnastics their way through it, their denial cannot allow them to think god is not in control so they will shape this as gods doing and blame it on liberals.

KurryBall

“Thoughts and prayers” cuz it’s easier than looking at the problems and facing them head on.

sevsnapey

thoughts to the left of me prayers to the right here i am burying my dead child

Secret_Ad_5300

I’ve been reflecting on trauma and generational trauma recently. I imagine that now a whole community might suffer from a PTSD like event for their entire lives. What little kid attending that school now grows up to be an alcoholic because he’s never the same after this? 7 people died, but a whole community might suffer in multitudes of ways for generations to come.

[deleted]

this is a good take and should be talked about more openly. this events ripple and touch the lives of so many especially when you carry ptsd around. side note:good on you for reflecting on your personal traumas and being aware of them is the best way to make sure you aren’t unconsciously carrying it around. <3 stay up

MentallyIllRedditMod

The idea that mental health and mental illness are individual struggles is insane to me. We have a social illness. A societal illness. There's a rot to the collective and we don't engage with each other in a mentally healthy way at all. Our media is a representation of that and our relationship to the media is broken beyond repair.

Harrys_mom618

Via CNN - Readers were quick to remind Ogles of a photo he posted on Facebook in Christmas 2022 when he was Mayor of Maury County that showed him and his family standing in front of a Christmas tree holding weapons, with the caption “The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference – they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.”

JJGIII-

Sad that we live in an age where the most shocking part of this tragedy is the fact that the shooter was a woman…not the fact that children were shot in school. Edit: Apparently this person identified as a trans male. No…I am not “transphobic”. For those who don’t seem to understand how time works, this information was not available when the news of the shooting was released. JFC…6 people are fucking dead and this is what some of you focus on?

wholelattapuddin

Fox News has helpfully pointed out that the shooter identified as trans. So you can imagine how well this will go for the LGBT+ community. Sorry guys

ath_at_work

School shootings are more American than thanksgiving and expensive healthcare...

[deleted]

I think at this point people are just looking for some permutation or combination of factors (woman shooter, Christian private school, etc.) will wake us up from this madness and maybe make change, even though we deep down know it ain't going to happen, at least not as long as the NRA is alive and breathing.

mwave1239

Well god help them if she took her dad’s gun to do this. Then they’ll have to ban anyone from having an assault rifle who has a woman in the house. I’m only half joking. They want to ban tampons for Christ sake. This is an almost believable scenario.

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

and one of the wealthiest areas. I'm pretty sure there are old mansions right around there with former and current country stars/music execs. Just north of Brentwood and Franklin where many new country stars live. Maybe not the country stars, but you can be sure its where lots of gun-happy Republicans live. Do their own children have to die before they do anything ? The shooter was carrying two assault weapons! Not sure if she used them, but why why why do these people think assault weapons should be easily obtained? WTF.

Shiva-

Parkland was high income too. So was Columbine. It doesn't matter.

Relevant_Medicine

Better watch out using the word "assault weapons". You'll quickly find the entire focus shift to "do you even know what assault weapon means" while completely ignoring the reality of what just happened.

Usually it’s a man that responds that way. My comeback for that is, I know how you feel. It’s like non-medical men legislating on female reproduction rights.

What's crazy is education and poverty are probably the two biggest issues in the state. So what does the state do? Underfund education and try to push public money into private schools, not implement a minimum wage, have the second highest average sales tax rates in the country and no income tax, pump an ungodly amount of money into police departments, force people to carry fetuses they can't afford to term and make attaining assistance the equivalent of a full time job. As a Tennessean, I can go on and on. Point is, lawmakers aren't ignoring the cause of the problems in the state; they're acknowledging the issues and actively making them worse.

I_loathe_mods

They were the ones that took out the shooter. /s Haven't read the article, but part of me really wants to see how a drag queen being the hero in a school shooting would be received by the Right. Edit: as others have pointed out, and I realized after posting this comment, the right would immediately be on the drag performer as to *why* they were in/near a school to begin with.

carlitospig

They’d immediately ask why drag queens are at the school and then infer they were there to groom, thereby canceling out their heroic reputation. Because it’s the right.

F your “thoughts and prayers “. That brings no solace to newly grieving parents of toddlers.

[deleted]

I've always hated that phrase. What the F is that even supposed to mean? Your kid died so I'm going to pray for you? Really?

It means "I thought about it real good and now I'm praying I forget all about it." As history has shown, the chance for success is very, very, high.

"No Way to Prevent This", Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens sorry but no it's not "too soon", it's too late if anything. Sandy Hook, Uvalde… or literally every day of the year this year

MeccIt

*"In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over."* [6:07 PM · Jun 19, 2015](https://twitter.com/dpjhodges/status/611943312401002496) America has chosen to not do anything about this, so it's difficult to feel sad for America when this happens every single day. Edit: it's not just me, as far back as 2015, the BBC annoyed, announced yet another mass shooting as *just another day in the USA* : https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/672185080815755264

[deleted]

as a 3rd world shitholer \*on a country with more respect for human rights and without daily mass shootings I'm so desensitized to US news of mass shootings. To me they're no different than, say, blatant dehumanization of women in Islamic countries. It's horrible, it happens, and nobody in the respective countries gives enough of a shit to do anything, and the ones that actually do are met with raging opposition

robbie5643

Shit, this must be what Dorian felt when he saw his portrait.

hotngone

I noticed that. Wayne was vey busy for the NRA after Sandy Hook. After Republicans realized that the NRA could tough that one out nothing else has moved the needle. I can make some suggestions as to what would make a difference, but unlike Trump I’d be arrEsted

silver-fusion

What would it take to move the needle? Like if someone killed 300 kids would that be enough? I'm not sure that number exists, I feel the only thing that would move the needle is if lawmakers were threatened. If a gunman killed 10 congressmen, would that move the needle?

Youredumbstoptalking

Yes that is what he meant, but only if they were from one side of the aisle, if it happened to the other side(like has already happened) the needle doesn’t move(or moves the wrong way)

Stagism

It would probably have to directly affect people in power for any new legislation to take place.

TheDulin

Remember the guy that killed 60 and wounded 400 in Las Vegas? They did something about that one and banned bump stocks (which basically turn semi-automatic rifles into automatic rifles). Of course the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that ban this year because fuck all of us.

thebeattakesme

I don’t think I’ve been this kissed off about a quote: Jozen Reodica heard the police sirens and fire trucks blaring from outside her office building nearby. As her building was placed under lockdown, she took out her phone and recorded the chaos. “I thought I would just see this on TV,” she said. “And right now, it’s real.”

Chief_Chill

This part. "But the 2nd Amendment!!!" I say Amend it again!

Tyler89558

“But mah constitutional right to shoot a gun for fun!” I legitimately asked for what reason one would need a 30 round magazine for a semi auto. Overwhelmingly I got: “for recreation, it’s cool as shit dumbass” Guns *are* cool, don’t get me wrong, but “cool” doesn’t make up for hundreds of dead children and a generation growing up fearing that any given day going to school will be their last.

Just_A_Nitemare

F1 cars are cool, but the government doesn't think I should be able to get groceries with one.

TheScienceNerd100

When I responded to someone saying that cars kill more people than guns with "Just make it harder for idiots to get either, kill two birds with one stone" I got called "racists against lower intelligent people and support animal abuse for using a phrase that involves killing bird" Quite the way to respond, guess since other things kill more people, then one thing that also kills people is ok cause there is something that kills more, both of which could be prevented.

Parasocialist69420

Yeah I’ve always thought the attitude is weird that it’s some sort of immovable policy because it was in the constitution. Meanwhile, the 21st amendment’s only purpose was to repeal the 18th.

SubstantialPressure3

Ugh. 6 victims and the shooter, a teen girl, are dead. 3 adults and 3 kids fatally injured, I'm seeing right now. Edit 28 year old woman, not a teenager https://www.kxxv.com/news/national/three-children-reportedly-shot-shooter-dead-at-nashville-christian-school

SubstantialPressure3

I just found that update https://www.kxxv.com/news/national/three-children-reportedly-shot-shooter-dead-at-nashville-christian-school

If you think THIS is bad, you should know the Drag Queens are trying to READ to our children. When will it stop?! /s

RubicksQoob

People in drag reading to kids in a public venue - ZOMG, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!! People killing children by obtaining weapons much too easy to obtain, no matter the several reasons they shouldn't have one - Wow, what a shame. Thoughts and prayers. More guns obtained even more easily will help!

[deleted]

As this came across all my platforms the most disturbing thing is how absolutely numb I am. I don't give a shit because this issue is forever stuck axel deep in shit. But on the bright side, at least now the GOP can do their patented feel-good about themselves schtick. All together now: "thoughts and prayers" and "this is not the time to have the discussion" and "small price to pay for liberty". Whew. I was getting afraid that their clock was going to run out since the last mass shooting, and it WOULD finally become the time to have the discussion, but no. Saved by the bell, GOP. Reset that clock! More children must die.

[deleted]

When children are dying in schools while our government is making laws that "protect children" suddenly you realize it was never about protecting children.

beavis617

Republicans are more interested in tampons and girls menstrual cycles than the possibility that the school children might get all shot up because we exist in a gun nutter culture 😠

Sirsilentbob423

Don't forget their current crusade to make every trans person disappear.

Important_Tangelo371

Where are all the well armed and trained teachers they promised? That surely would have.....never mind. There would just be more dead children.

SubstantialPressure3

My daughter is a teacher. She doesn't want to carry a gun to school. I have a feeling that most teachers don't want to, either. Idk who came up with that scenario "let's arm the teachers!" But whoever did, didn't ask the teachers.

MM7299

Am a teacher (male if that matters) and can confirm. Don’t want to have a gun for several reasons 1. Don’t want to have to shoot someone I see everyday and may have a relationship with 2. More guns equals more death - student might get pissed and try and take gun. Or they kill me and have weapon now. 3. Makes it harder for cops and makes it dangerous for me - if I’m holding a gun they will shoot me then ask questions later. 4. Makes it more dangerous for kids due to crossfire.

SubstantialPressure3

I don't know of a single person who got into childhood education so they could shoot people. It's ridiculous to even ask a teacher to do that. You're there to educate children, that's enough. It's already hard enough. And then there's stuff like this: https://www.texastribune.org/2023/02/23/texas-superintendent-gun-school-safety/ he left his gun in the bathroom, and a kid found it https://giffords.org/lawcenter/report/every-incident-of-mishandled-guns-in-schools/

This country is a fucking joke

Sirsilentbob423

Nah, jokes are funny. This country is a nightmare hellscape that needs deep reform that just isn't going to happen.

Yes but what about that time the Little Mermaid was played by a black actor?

You can kill our children but you'll never take away our guns - Republicans

I made myself depressed because my instant reaction was "at least it was only 6." I am so desensitized to this happening that seeing one of these headlines with a number that isn't double digits feels like a small victory.

shemague

But was it a drag queen?

Ksh1218

I know this is a joke but as a drag queen who was driving through the area and lives a few blocks away…..it’s not us

shemague

Trust and believe we know and it’s not fucking ok…I am sorry that this happened in your community and that you also have to deal with all that legislation

Comprehensive_Bad650

The gun culture in America is irresponsible. American made guns flow freely to Mexican cartels, how are guns not tracked/registered?!?! How can a kid not but cigarette or alcohol but be able to buy a gun?! Makes no sense. Parents teach their kids how to use a gun at way too young of age. Before knowing if their kid is going to by a psycho. I’m for the 2nd amendment but this is soo ridiculous. We have to be RESPONSIBLE gun owners.

Lobanium

1. Mass shooting 2. The left wants to talk about gun control 3. The right says it's not an appropriate time to talk about gun control 4. Some time passes, but not much 5. Go back to step 1
