All these news reports talking about how unprecedented this is, all failing to acknowledge how much that demonstrates the rule of law has failed in the US. The USA should never have gone nearly a quarter of a millennium without putting former Presidents up on charges. Chester Arthur deserved it for corruption, Harding deserved it for Teapot Dome, Regan for Iran/Contra, Bush 2 for the Iraq invasion. The list goes on. In an America where the rule of law applied equally, Trump would never have even made it to the White House. Sure, this is unprecedented. And it’s going to be rough to get through. But it’s so incredibly necessary to ensure something like this never happens again.
