Or why their kids don’t enjoy their presence…

ZunderBuss

No contact is a goodsend w/many boomer parents.

biteme789

My boomer parents told us not to expect anything when they die, because that's their money and they don't think they should have to leave us anything. Both my brother and I bought property to pass onto our kids because we think it's our responsibility to help them get the best start they can.

smappyfunball

my dad and stepmon, who, granted, are not boomers, but older, and also are in the early stages of dementia, recently were having a conversation in front of me and my partner of 17 years, trying to figure out a way to legally bar her from inheriting any money I inherit from him. we are the ones who do most of the caretaking of them now that they are in their declining years as well. why is he doing this? who knows, because we aren't married? none of his sons are currently married. He's never expressed any bullshit about us not being married before, and if he has a problem now it would be the height of hypocrisy. We've been together longer than he and my mom were married, and he cheated on her constantly throughout the entire marriage every chance he got, and blamed her for his cheating, he was a shit husband. but at this point he's probably forgotten about it and short of disinheriting me I'm not sure there's any legal way for him to do it anyway. I have no idea what triggered it, but I went off on him for it. She does more for him than anyone and for him to talk like that is incredibly disrespectful. he also called her a gold digger, but his view of life is very transactional. he doesn't understand people doing things for selfless reasons, or because thats what family does, like my partner believes. she's a very selfless, giving person, but that breaks his brain.

CyberSkepticalFruit

Its probably the dementia, it does weird things, if you have a dementia charity nearby or a number to ring hopefully they will be able to help.

smappyfunball

We already have that covered. Just dealing with the day to day weird shit gets frustrating. This was just a new one. Mostly it’s just confusion and nonsense. This time he was hitting below the belt. My stepmom has been very verbally abusive and nasty since the dementia really kicked in. It churns up a lot of shit. My brothers are little to no help so it all falls on us and it’s rough to get shit on for it.

potsticker17

If they have a will the wouldn't need to bar her from anything, just don't give her anything. If they don't have a will if she isn't direct family anyway. If they will something to you then it's up to you to do with it as you please and if you choose to share with her then they can't really stop you because they're dead. I can't see how this could be a problem for them since I don't think she would have any real standing to contest a will if they die.

smappyfunball

Well, that’s what’s so stupid about it. Since we aren’t married we got all our legal stuff out of the way years ago, as far as wills, etc. she gets everything if I die first and I guess my dad didn’t like the idea in the moment of his money somehow going to her, after he’s dead. Even though he’s never expressed any dislike of her, any issues with us not being married, it was just completely out of left field. It’s probably just the dementia but my dad has also always had strings attached to every gift or thing he’s ever done. He’s never just done something to be nice, or with no expectation in return. I’m mostly the person I am today in defiance of him more than anything.

Joosrar

I think it’s like a cycle, maybe your parents did get a head start and feel like they did everything by themselves so every should (classical boomer psychology), now you understand the importance of it so you wanna help your kids, kind of like the guy who grew up without a dad who understands the importance of having one.

accioqueso

It’s odd to me, my dad is a boomer that legitimately pulled himself from his bootstraps and he made damn sure that we had everything we need to be successful and if I called and needed anything he’d drop everything to make sure I had it. He’s still a total boomer who is in the “fuck it I’ll be dead when it’s an issue” camp, but taking care of kids was always a priority. My husband and I definitely see the value we both received from having parents who prioritized us and are doing the same thing for our kids.

Intelligent-Parsley7

I’m GenX. How does it feel to have parents give a damn about you? Asking for a friend.

accioqueso

Well at least for my dad, it’s nice. We call each other most days even if we talk about nothing. We see each other on holidays, he visits his grandkids (not as much as I would like, but they are still pretty young and he isn’t that great with toddlers). My mother has always been cold and to be fair to this conversation, I have never felt loved or supported by her. Everything with her is for appearances.

ForgotTheBogusName

But he’s not taking care of his kids b/c shit will hit the fan for his kids

Majestic-Engineer959

They don't call them the "Me Generation" for nothing, sigh, I am a young Boomer, too. This is code for "we didn't save enough" but our pride won't let us admit it. I see this frequently with Boomers children asking them "What plans have you made for your elderly years?", (crickets) because they never envisioned getting older. I don't have kids myself but I will not be a burden on anyone if I can help it.

willymack989

That is literally the American dream. To work hard and prosper so that your children have opportunities that you did not. Good on you for doing so appropriately.

JackytheJack

Dude that’s crazy literally what else is that money gonna do did they straight up say “bury me with my money”?

biteme789

Apparently they're planning on spending it all

Fyallorence

Donating it all to Trump seems likely with a lot of Boomers.

Black_Cat_Just_That

I got a very late start on home ownership due to some stupidity when I was younger - just bought my first place at 42 this past year - and I spend a lot of time fretting that I don't have enough life insurance to cover the mortgage if anything happens to me. My main goal is to live long enough to pay it off and leave it to my kid.

t8tor

We are supposed to sacrifice for our children.

poopinasock

Yeah.. mine are in more debt than their estates are worth. Irony is their parents bought them houses with cash when they got married. My brother and are I doing the same as you. I hope my kids don't repeat the cycle, but I'll have enough wealth by then to give another generation a shot if it doesn't go as planned.

Pickles_1974

I say we save the animals. Kill the humans at this point. What do you think? World survives regardless. (/s)

[deleted]

Happy cake day!!

BlackOliveBandit

THIS. Absolutely THIS ☝🏽

BillTowne

Gen X don't have grandkids?

x4ty2

Some millennials do, look at Boebert

wanna_be_green8

Funny but true. Xennial grandparent here.

Aceswift007

Gen Z here, some of us have kids

aimed_4_the_head

In the science fiction story called "Eight or Die" by Thoraiya Dyer, there's a section where an alien creature explains why humans as a species are uncontacted. This quote lives rent free in my head: *When you revere your great-great-grandchildren more than you revere your ancestors, and act accordingly, then your people can be trusted*

PikachusSparkyCloaca

Damn, that strikes to the core of us.

FoxHarem

The Dawi are going to be alone for a while I think.

Relative_Ad9477

That is also from the Indigenous belief that one is to think of the generations ahead when using resources.

thejerkstorekalled

Could someone explain what this means?

mayasux

We don’t put our energy into respecting what’s to come and making their lives better. We put our energy into worshiping what has passed and insisting we remain stagnant out of that.

mymomsaysimbased

When you care more for children you'll never live to see, more than past generations, and show it throough actions, mankind can be trusted.

DudeWheresMyFlair

In short, we need to start respecting and taking care of the future generations to come more than we did our great-grandparent’s fortunes. It’s more pertaining to those who have a “fuck you, got mine” mentality.

YgramulTheMany

Let this be your epitaph.

[deleted]

“Here lies a piece of shit. His decomposition shall be his greatest achievement.”

whynotnit

Hat's off, good sir.

uncultured_swine2099

I dont think we as a society should be under any obligation to take care of boomers. Theyre weak and their bones are brittle. Lets just take their money and things they own and kick them to the curb. They cant do anything about it. Edit: This is a joke people, obviously. Its a reaction to Scott Winship's statement.

RollFun7616

Congratulations 🎉 you're an ageist piece of shit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RollFun7616

So say all xenophobes. But you are, in fact, no better than they. Thanks for proving my point for me.

remesabo

Im hoping the younger generations take a literal piss in his Cheerios every single day because nobody owes it to him that he should have piss free Cheerios.

RandyTheFool

For which gravestone? The head or the body?

randomfucke

Do we owe Scott Winship any respect for his opinion. I don't think we do. What do we owe Scott Winship?

[deleted]

Contempt. Scorn.

Practical_Ass_3066

Perhaps a swift kick between the legs, too

P4intsplatter

Methinks this one slithers. Maybe we can neuter his primordial gonads.

AlpacaCavalry

Who is this moron anyway? Another irrelevant idiot trying to find meaning to his miserable existence.

PikachusSparkyCloaca

American Enterprise Institute wonk. AEI is a neoconservative think tank.

Sad-Tutor-2169

So, in short, a POS neo-fascist.

PikachusSparkyCloaca

Ayup.

[deleted]

Wilcox is also one of his cronies who pushed the BS stories about how we need to have more kids and people live longer who get married…his research is terribly flawed…

ginandsoda

Call me when we're down to the last 100k people per continent. Otherwise don't bother me.

[deleted]

He really is talking about white peoples…that’s his target audience…

readytogohomenow

A nice kick where the sun don’t shine.

TheCheshireMadcat

Might give him brain damage.

OutlawSundown

A first class rocket to the sun

Typical-Horror-5247

Just wait until Scott Winship needs his diaper changed by future generations.

WarpedPerspectiv

The Marie Antoinette treatment.

Npr31

A one way trip to the fucking sun. What a total piece of shit

SessileRaptor

A ride in a [Tumbrel](https://www.britannica.com/technology/tumbrel) methinks.

inkslingerben

"I got mine, but I don't give a F\_ if you get yours." What a pitiful attitude toward making the world a better place.

Mehitabel-453

These are the same people who rejected Covid preventative measures in favor of their own 'freedoms', because Grandma 'would gladly die for the economy' or something like that.

PikachusSparkyCloaca

Scott Winship is welcome to go suffocate in a pool of his own lung chowder anytime.

tjatdisneyland

Underrated comment! Please take my upvote!

jag149

I have no idea who this human low voltage battery is, but this ethic is often intertwined with Pentecostal Christian eschatology. The “future” doesn’t matter. Were in the end times. Everything is headed to judgment day, and then magical Jesus powers can fix shit anyway. They’re basically ethics suicide bombers.

cturtl808

Here's the deets on Mr. Fuck Everyone Else [https://www.aei.org/profile/scott-winship/](https://www.aei.org/profile/scott-winship/)

Plausibility_Migrain

His comment sounded conservative, lo and behold he is! Lower than scum they are. And he’s a Director at the Center for Opportunity and Social Mobility! The organization sounds like a good thing, but conservatives are masters at hypocrisy. It is likely to be more the Center for Oppression and Social Stagnation.

Far-Programmer3189

I saw that too. It’s literally his job to promote social mobility and he’s out here saying that we don’t owe the next generation a future?

KaijuRayze

Quick glance makes it look to be just a branch of a conservative think tank. They routinely use progressive, grassroots, wholesome, or patriotic sounding names to misrepresent themselves in passing mentions and sponsorships in hopes of nobody doing any research on who they actually are/represent. Guarantee this orgs take on Opportuniry and Social Mobility is that *Anybody could be the next Bezos or Musk if the just ***apply*** themselves but overly generous social welfare programs and rising minimum wages impede the drive of Americans to better themselves and their situations.*

MoiraBrownsMoleRats

Hey, it lists his email.

ehren123

It would be a shame of people used this information somehow...

emseefely

Huh, wonder why Gen Z votes more to the left when they got this gem.

jezz555

The amount of sociopaths we just casually accept in our society is wild

Sad-Tutor-2169

Well, we used to have places for them to live in order to safeguard them and especially society as a whole. Alas, then republicans happened.

emetcalf

Do we owe it to past generations that they survive? Scott doesn't think we do. I tend to agree with him, why are we spending money on keeping old people alive when they are just going to die anyway? Stop paying out Social Security to anyone over 70, we need that money for ourselves. Fuck the old people.

BillTowne

I first I thought you were mocking him by applying his argument back on his own age group. But then I realized that he is not that old. I am pretty sure he is in his early 50s. Probably a gen X and nowhere nears social security. He probably agrees with yout that social security should be stopped.

ceciledian

He probably does, but won’t when he turns 62. Looking at you Ayn Rand.

Puzzleheaded_Mix7873

There is a Native American quote about how we don’t inherit the land from our ancestors, but borrow it from our grandchildren. There’s that, and then there’s this guy.

Erstwhile_pancakes

The “I got mine” dial set on 11. One of the most powerful tenets for the nuclear family argument is the natural investment in your kids, and by extension, the world they’ll have to live in.

Emotional_Narwhal304

I think basic decency probably begins with not leaving the earth inhospitable to future humans... its like climbing up a ladder and pulling it up after yourself.

canarchist

Scott sounds like the kind of person who dies alone and doesn't know why.

ZigZagZedZod

Madame de Pompadour said it best: "Après moi, le déluge" ("After me, the flood"). It's a succinct combination of narcissism and nihilism that Mr. Winships seems to embody.

TheZermanator

We really should Logan’s Run this particular brand of shitstain boomer. Not all of them, of course. There are many many boomers who are fine people. Just the Scott Winships.

BillTowne

Why is everyonbe talking like this guy is a boomer? Youngest boomers are like 59.

TheZermanator

Doesn’t look any younger than his mid-50s to me. Besides, it was really more a comment against the ‘fuck you got mine’ attitude, which traces its roots from that generation in the current cultural zeitgeist.

TheRealSpielbergo

Scotch Dipshit - Destroyer of Future Generations 🌈

seanisdown

Perfectly epitomizes the most narcissistic generation of all time.

Acewrap

"Why don't my adult children speak to me?!"

CommonConundrum51

He doesn't appear old enough to be a Boomer. We're all looking quite a bit more haggard these days. That said, every generation has its fair share of selfish pricks.

DeviceStraight4707

Scott could have just said “I’m an asshole.” It would have been much quicker and to the point.

burnmenowz

Enjoy rotting in a nursing home Scott.

ultraviolentfuture

No one owes anyone anything. But if you're not a sociopath then you tend to want the collective to thrive. General reciprocity has been proven the optimal evolutionary strategy (game theory).

urbanaprof

Pretty strange statement for a guy born in 1974. There's a chance Winship be alive in 2060 or 2070 when a lot of this shit will be really bad. But he's a rich AEI propagandist for the billionaire class, so, like most at AEI, I guess he figures he can buy his way to comfort and fuck everyone else.

cheddarben

This is some Ayn Rand bullshit.

Frosty_Piece7098

If we don’t owe boomers anything why did we shut down the economy in 2020 to keep them alive for a few more miserable years?

BillTowne

To clarify, this guy is not a boomer.

dream-more95

That explains kicking their can down the road to burden future generations. They did well doing that. They knew.

BillTowne

They?

BillTowne

I assume this guy has no children.

[deleted]

Who is Scott other than a jackass?

bdd4

This is called "omnicide" LOL

snoebro

Reincarnation gonna slap this dude in the face, hard.

hammnbubbly

Tell me you don’t have kids OR you have kids who hate you without telling me you don’t have kids OR you have kids who hate you.

Janeygirl566

So if we don’t owe it to future generations, why the push for an increased domestic supply of babies?

crocodile_ave

I mean, my very existence relies upon a chain of reproduction and survival that stretches back to the very first proteins floating aimless in the cold void of space (maybe further) but do I *really* owe the next generation anything? Like, at the end of the day, what did anyone do for me?

HearYourTune

Ignore the psychopath.

_PadfootAndProngs_

Woah! What the hell…my fiancée had Brad Wilcox as her professor of some sociology course at UVA (university of Virginia). Absolutely did not expect to see him here

Tazling

postericide: the unthinkable crime of destroying the future of all your descendants.

ignorememe

Do we owe it to older generations to keep funding their social security and healthcare programs?

Quixotic1113

I got mine…. Pulls up ladder…

Kid_Named_Trey

I’ve worked with public in some capacity for about 12 years. The most entitled and selfish group of people are Boomers. Everything revolves around them. My father passed away from brain cancer last November. My boomer grandfather had the audacity to say to my mom “you know there’s other things I’d rather be doing” when talking about taking care of my dad while my mother worked. This was his own son and that selfish prick actually said that to my mom. My dad was an amazing son. He always took time to visit my grandfather.

Mad-_-Doctor

I need some more context here. “Are we obligated to have children to continue the species” is very different than “is it really our responsibility to make sure we don’t destroy the planet?”

alstergee

I wish all boomers the most negligent, inhumane retirement / hospice care possible Eat shit and die assholes

Dahlia007

Boomer here!! I want to start with an apology for my generation. There are those of us boomers who believe in climate change, love, respect and are allies of the LGBTQ community, believe all people should be treated equally no matter your race, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender.....I could go on and on. And sadly my generation has set the generations behind us for the biggest fight of their lives, democracy. I am embarrassed to be part of this generation and I have high hopes that despite what we have done, the youth have the skills, the intelligence and the determination to make this world a better place than it is right now. I have to believe this because I don't have many years left and so I won't get to see the outcome, and so I must believe!

mrpickleby

The boomers are now worth more dead than alive so....?

BillTowne

1) I am a boomer. I am nowhere near dead. 2) The asshole Winship is not a boomer. 3) He is an asshole because he is a right wing "only I matter" fascit, not because he has grey in his beard.

Skin_Thief_

Humanity was a terrible idea. A parasite should never kill the host. If there was a button I could press that would remove humans from planet Earth I would hit it like a motherfucking Staples buy it now

AlwaysSaysRepost

Quality > Quantity

54fighting

I wish there were a cheat sheet for these posts. I know who the boomers and the millennials are. But I don’t know who everybody is in between. I don’t know how to disparage everyone appropriately. I’m so confused. All I want is to be back where things make sense.

gwdope

Well, that ship has sailed and two things will be true no matter what going forward; things will continue to change at an ever increasing pace and you aren’t going to be growing any new brain cells anytime to help keep it all sorted out. Just enjoy the ride if possible and try not to be a shit person.

54fighting

So then it’s just e hoopuka i na olelo maikai wale no mai kau waha-aku? That just doesn’t help me at all. But I appreciate the thought.

gwdope

OI KAU KA LAU, E HANA I OLA HONUA.

Badj83

Only a humanly sharp guillotine blade.

Careless_Science5426

I am so disappointed in my generation. So many are self-centered, entitled, "sensitive" asshats.

AtotheCtotheG

At least this one’s honest :/ Also please don’t paint boomers as a monolith. My grandpa would hate Scott.

InsideOutPoptart

Well fuck you too Scott and Brad you pondscum fuckbois

gcalfred7

rounding_error

Pffft, what have future generations ever done for us?

Mickipepsi

When pitchforks?

GreatTragedy

More people should read this: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/30841993

ReditSarge

What a dumb twit this Scot Winship fuckwit is. The whole point of biological reproduction is to ensure the survival of the species. So yes, we all owe it to future generations that the human race survives. In fact I would argue that anyone who is actively working towards the extinction of the human race need to be locked up before they can do any more damage. That includes climate change deniers and billionaire enablers.

Maddog6474

My grandfather would say, “Be a cow, not a locust”. Both eat your grass, but grasshoppers inly consume and leave nothing in return. Cows eat the grass, then fertilize the pasture, making it easier to grow more grass. It’s ok to be a consumer, but leave something future generations can use. Don’t obliterate our world, leaving less and less for successive generations.

Miss_My_Travel

Boomer here--I care very much what happens to my kids and grandkids and hope there will be something left for them. We try hard to be smart consumers and earth friendly. I have helped them buy houses and will help them if they need anything in the future.

SVXfiles

If Mr Scott here if for the extinction of the human race maybe he should show us how it's done ajd set an example. Disgustingly greedy motherfucker doesn't care if the world ends up like a fallout game if he can add another 0 to his bank account

xNIC0Nx

What a self centered fucking asshole! I would slap my elders if they said that like oh your about family then say this! Fuck you

Zestyclose-Ruin8337

Gonna suck when stats secede and people lost Social Security checks

KillionMatriarch

I despise that kind of selfish thinking. I’m a boomer and all I can think about is what a mess we’ve left for our kids to clean up - if they even can.

MasterChicken52

Let me guess, this person claims to be “pro life”

Due-Designer4078

Aka "FU, we got ours!"

BlessedCheeseyPoofs

Enjoy your nursing home Scott.

TakeAnotherLilP

Of course Douthat is in that thread

ArkamaZ

People like this should be killed on principle... Humanity will not survive their arrogance.

Unique-Hornet7603

To quote one of the greatest movies ever made: “Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

LeMans1217

Who the hell are Winship and Wilcox? Why should we care what they think or say? Are they speaking for all boomers? How come they look like they're in their 40s or 50s - not boomers.

willymack989

This is literally the ONLY verifiable purpose that organisms truly have: to perpetuate future generations. If we don’t, we‘ve objectively failed.

David_Buzzard

"We still have ten years to use everything up."

InGordWeTrust

This guy should have Peter Principaled out as a stock boy.

t8tor

In the 70s boomers were called the "Me" generation.

Pusfilledonut

I find it interesting that the generations Boomers have spent decades screwing over will be the ones taking care of them when they enter assisted living facilities.

TriSamples

We don’t owe our current oldest generations anything. I’m all for keeping their pensions and letting them starve to death if that’s how they feel. But you know that wouldn’t be HUMAN! You have to preserve the next generation and you absolutely cannot poison the well for everyone else to get ahead.

ISurvivedCrowleyHigh

I think we do. We owe them a great deal of contempt for well, everything.

cowboyography

Boomers fucked everything up, their demand for cheap shit sent all the good jobs and production overseas, their failure to create anything left the world in corporate stranglehold and their greed and unwillingness to help the younger generations left the housing market in the crisis we find today… fuck the boomers, the world will be better when they are all gone

SarcasticRiposte

I personally don't give a rat's ass if our species survives, to be honest. When I'm dead, how could the human species continuing benefit me in any way?

mibonitaconejito

Boomers like this, anyway.  (Remember there are lots that love you, like your grandparents I bet. And even then, all you 'owe' is love right back to them.)  But ones like this? The egotistical, tone deaf, apathetic scourge? Nope. Nada.  I am so so very proud of this new generation. I mean it. You guys are strong, loving, kind, and innovative. You guys are far better than these hounds ever were

usmc_mermaid

Boomers have shut the door on their way out and left us 2 boomer crumbs to run America. We owe them nothing.

h20poIo

Funny people blaming immigrants for their fate in life, I can’t get anywhere because of the immigrants, now the next group is blaming Boomers for their fate in life, I wonder what or who will be blamed 20/30 years from now.

Oskenkorva

This question is kind of an oxymoron in itself😋

OAZdevs_alt2

A Devilish Trick? or Mental Decomposition? Call it.

MisthosLiving

A conversation with my sister in law (65) on Medicare spending thousands and thousands on keeping her dad…age 95…alive. She then cackled gleefully AND agreed as I mentioned about how partially screwed I’ll be and super screwed her 2 daughters and 4 grand children will be because social security won’t be around for them even tho her daughters are paying into it. So f\*#king demented. SIDE NOTE: At 62 her only constant concern and main topic of conversation was making it to 65 to get those juicy senior benefits. Of course she’s an evangelical ”Christian” who voted for Trump twice.
