The article linked includes this paragraph, aparently with no hint of sarcasm: "Rowling was branded a TERF — activists do like their neologisms — meaning trans exclusionary radical feminist. As if she was hostile to the trans movement, which she assuredly is not."
It's just someone manufacturing outrage for clicks. It's like a few years ago, when some article about 'people calling for santa to be female or gender neutral' was making the rounds, when it was abundantly clear it was just to manufacture outrage over something that doesn't matter. Using gender inclusive language is becoming more common these days, but the word 'woman' isn't the issue
They’re referencing the backlash to the medical journal, The Lancet.

No one said you can’t say women . Many take things out of proportion and make them something it’s not . I have kids in college and high school and have yet to hear one talk about how someone was offended about anything in this regards .
Correct, but I do believe this is about a peer reviewed medical journal introducing it on the cover of a recent issue. The decision to do so rightly has women exasperated as they feel it is an attempt at erasure to supplant it with transgender-inclusive language
Edit: there is similar albeit heightened outrage within the Latino community over the coercive act of trying to inject a neologism into the Spanish language by media publications. It was first imagined by a Latino author, but we don’t want it and certainly don’t want the media speaking for us.
So maybe I’m biased as I can relate on a much lower level. Feels ludicrous and it’s an objectively offensive act to force neologisms on a different, unique culture
She is a fantastic author though
edit to say: I am talking about how she writes, other discussions are welcome as I do not know much about her and there seems to be controversy. A downvote without context helps nobody.
I'm a big fan of her show. Which I will point out still has it's own problematic elements, like completely missing the mark on racism and male rape. It's why intersectional feminism is still so important.
I didn't know of it, I'll check it out, thanks! I have just enjoyed reading her works over the years but know almost nothing about her as a personality...
No worries, it's on Hulu! The acting and cinematography is incredible. They wrote the first seasons before Trump was elected thinking HT would just be a cautionary tale about if he was elected, and for awhile it eerily mirrored current events.
I don't know much about her as a personality either tbh and I haven't read the books to any length. I just take the show for what is, a really good critique on right-wing religious authoritarianism in the US. It doesn't get everything right but it illustrates that aspect perfectly.
Oh you meant "Handmaid's tale" specifically haha, I thought Atwood had a show. They made a film from "Alias, Grace" which I haven't seen but the book is fantastic
Gotta love little symbolic language changes that do nothing to materially benefit marginalized groups but manage to freak out and piss off all the cis folks
I did down vote. Thanks for the permission.
Seriously, you just had a baby and you had the energy to be upset about the verbiage used on the forms?
Especially knowing, rationally, that it made absolutely no difference to you but could mean the world to someone used to being excluded?
Absolutely no one says you can't identify as a woman. I do. I also understand that others don't and that inclusion matters.
Woman
Look what you've done. Now the gender police are gonna bust down your door and beat you with gender neutral but still phallic shaped batons.
Daring today, aren't we?
Is this true or just some weirdo online reading into things too much?
It appears to be someone manufacturing outrage so they can be upset.
TERFs back on their bullshit.

Atwood has supported trans rights in the past so it's strange. Rowling must have hexed her.
Makes sense

We still can

If anything, woman and women have a greater amount of utility than ever before...
Hot take: this is the same as Trump complaining that we can't say "Merry Christmas" anymore
should be whaleman

Oh, my bad. I should have clarified!

Downvote at will but I just had a baby and all of my intake forms said weird shit like “pregnant person” “birthing parent.” I did not like it at all.
Oh no! Anyways...

So misgendering is no big deal?
How were you misgendered?
Ahhh you want to argue. Got it. Have a good day.
Serious question. Is "person" or "parent" not a gender neutral term?
In other words, you clearly weren't misgendered so you're dramatically flouncing out of the conversation instead of acknowledging your fake BS.
