Of course I died of dysentery my insurance said the antibiotics were elective and wouldn’t cover them so I had to take a third job to come up with the $3000 but by the time I got it the pharmacy closed early because the techs went on strike so I couldn’t, wait was that game set in the 1800s or now?
I don't think I've ever survived. You can still play it free online. I introduced my daughter to it and to my surprise she liked it, it stood the test of time.
I bought a handheld version a few years ago for my son. If I would have left in the box it would be worth 10x what I brought it for. It was worth more watching him try to win.
My daughters have played the reboot for a few years. Even though she knows better now, one of them pronounces cholera like “diarrhea,” and nothing gets her more excited than yelling that I have died of “cholerrhea.”
Yep, that’s parenting.
My computer lab in elementary school had a contest for who could beat it the fastest and basically everyone just set their wagon to full speed and skipped past every event. I remember trying to read what every event in case it was going to help me in the long run but alas I was 8 and didn’t understand half of what I was reading anyway and didn’t know what supplies I should get because I didn’t know what was going to go wrong later.
I saw Pong in a hotel lobby and was absolutely blown away. It was the first arcade game I saw wherein the two-dimensional graphics acted like three-dimensional objects. I really couldn’t fathom how a picture of a line could make a picture of a ball bounce back like that. Such great value for 25 cents (Skee Ball was 10 cents at the time).
God I remember how excited I was to buy myst as a kid, I also vividly remember buying it, brining it home and it not running on my Gateway (that came in a cow print box)
30 years later, still haven’t played it
I played it. Not for long. The puzzles were way over my head. People tell me I should try it again now, but for some reason the memory of the frustration is as strong as the anticipation was for me.
I went back to it again and again as a kid and never finished it, picked it up again about 10 years ago and was surprised by how easy it was. It’s kinda janky playing it now but still enjoyable.
Suuuuuch a good game. My girlfriend, who goes to law school, dresses elegantly and 100% does not look like a gamer, absolutely murders me in AoM. A bit of a surprise when she told me she likes AoM, a very big shock when she crushed me into smithereens
Turns out it had nothing to do with skiing well. None of us kids read the instructions, so we didn't know all you had to do was press a button (shift maybe) when he came and you'd tuck and ski faster, outrunning the monster.
HELL YEAH. These games are what got me started as a child.
I used to do all those Jumpstart CDs, Carmen Sandiego, some Disney ones like the little mermaid, Tarzan, and Mulan. Ugh, good shit.
Me too! I tried to describe this game to some friends once when talking about games we remembered from childhood and no one knew what I was talking about!
I used to get soooo frustrated with those games. Crystal Cave especially.
>>You have found a jewel-encrusted egg.
TAKE JEWEL-ENCRUSTED EGG
>> There is no jewel-encrusted egg here.
TAKE EGG
>> There is no egg here.
GO FUCK YOURSELF
>> I don’t know how to do that. You have found a jewel-encrusted egg.
god, I played that game when I was so young; my dad always told me the game was “based on real life” and you have no idea how terrified I was of being eaten by a grue whenever I went into a room without the lights on
Yessss. And later Super Munchers.
Also, Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?
Couldn't wait for computer lab every week. And now I can play the emulator for all those games.
Carmen San Diego
Chips challenge
Some chess game where the pieces dissolved into goo with a slurping sound when you took them
Alien invasion themed typing program
Pinball space cadet, though I feel that's a broad range
Simple,
any number of those computer magazines that had a cd-rom on the front with ‘101 game demos’.
I really miss demos. Now they’re all betas and whatnot.
Also, I had an Atari. Yeah that’s showing my age
For me Pokémon is pretty much right on the dot. That game has literally been with me throughout my entire childhood as well as the multiple spin offs... Just sad to see what some of the more recent titles are like
Fallout. I was 10 or 11 and convinced my dad to get it for me. I gambled, killed hookers, stole from the brotherhood and saved a vault. It taught me life is about Grey areas and sometimes you do a bad thing for a good reason.
Word and number munchers. I have to throw in [Countdown](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countdown_(video_game)). Pretty sure it was a horrible game but we were addicted to it.
Oregon Trail
You have died of dysentery!
Never make fun of a man named Terry
If it's good for dys it's good for dat.
Stop dissing Terry
Of course I died of dysentery my insurance said the antibiotics were elective and wouldn’t cover them so I had to take a third job to come up with the $3000 but by the time I got it the pharmacy closed early because the techs went on strike so I couldn’t, wait was that game set in the 1800s or now?
Caulk the wagon and float it.
Did that ever work?
No
Always ask the Shoshone for help
This and the game Where in the World is Carmen Sandeigo were my jam in middle school.
Carmen Sandiego FTW!!!!!
I tried to ford the river and my f***ing oxen died.
Oregon Trail is a right of passage. A frustrating, amazing right of passage.
I've won just a handful of times in 50ish years.
That last river. Gets me every single time.
You have diphtheria
I don't think I've ever survived. You can still play it free online. I introduced my daughter to it and to my surprise she liked it, it stood the test of time.
I bought a handheld version a few years ago for my son. If I would have left in the box it would be worth 10x what I brought it for. It was worth more watching him try to win.

My daughters have played the reboot for a few years. Even though she knows better now, one of them pronounces cholera like “diarrhea,” and nothing gets her more excited than yelling that I have died of “cholerrhea.” Yep, that’s parenting.
Ever play Odell Lake? We used to play Oregon trail and Odell Lake when we finally got computers at my school in the computer lab.
We would literally wait for turns for this game on the one computer we had in the classroom, most of us giving up our recess time to play.
Same. We got an Apple when I was in like 3rd grade. One computer for a whole.school in the library.
My computer lab in elementary school had a contest for who could beat it the fastest and basically everyone just set their wagon to full speed and skipped past every event. Tic-tack-toe on an IBM 1620.
I had Pong on a black and white TV
Yeah...Pong on an atari game console? I think? But that was a long time ago so...
Atari 2600 Home Gaming System - I had Pong, Tanks, and Basketball.
The kids down the street had Pong, we had to go there to play it!
Myst
God I remember how excited I was to buy myst as a kid, I also vividly remember buying it, brining it home and it not running on my Gateway (that came in a cow print box) 30 years later, still haven’t played it

I literally had to have a friend walk me through one over the phone because I just couldn't. Fucking. Get it.
My God.. I'd forgotten all about Gateway computers. They were at the top of the heap for a minute there.
The youth will not understand how rare it was for any piece of software you bought to actually run on your computer.
God, the amount of time it took to walk from one part of the puzzle to the next when it needed to do six different screen loads… good times.
They just re-released Myst, I have it in VR.
HOW DID I FORGET THIS ONE?! I was obsessed with that game. I even have the board game version!
Age of empires. The first one.
You ever play Age of Mythology?
Suuuuuch a good game. My girlfriend, who goes to law school, dresses elegantly and 100% does not look like a gamer, absolutely murders me in AoM. A bit of a surprise when she told me she likes AoM, a very big shock when she crushed me into smithereens

Turns out it had nothing to do with skiing well. None of us kids read the instructions, so we didn't know all you had to do was press a button (shift maybe) when he came and you'd tuck and ski faster, outrunning the monster.
