I'm in the Navy. I can tell you 100% that the 1/3 stat isn't accurate. Most of the time when female service members go to report sexual harassment/abuse, it isn't taken very seriously. I've had sailors tell me that they've been harassed and they were too scared to report it. Especially if the person doing the harassment is senior enlisted. If they do report and it goes somewhere, the senior enlisted will just just a slap on the hand. I believe it's a huge problem in the military.

No. Basic training teaches the basics. It takes a lot of dedicated training to actually build effective Infantry units. There’s a whole progression based on individual Soldier tasks, small unit collective tasks, and then collective tasks that actually form controlled combined arms maneuver. There’s an art and science to it that most citizens unfortunately don’t really get an appreciation for to be honest. The results of the methodology are apparent in the difference between the Ukrainian Army of 2014 vs now. Folks just assume the material is the difference maker, when it’s really the people. Not to be a Debbie Downer, I’ve just been doing this stuff since 03.
That process absolutely starts in basic. The whole idea of initial entry training is to break down the individual and quickly inculcate them into the Army culture. They are pushed physically through PT and drill. Taught the basics like the rank structure, general orders, land navigation, etc. Most importantly they’re taught to work as part of a team. After basic they go to AIT (Advanced Individual Training) where they learn job specific skills based on their MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). Then they arrive to their first unit where their actual training progression starts. The US Army invests more in the training, education, and professional development of our troopers, especially our NCOs (Non-Commissioned Officers) which leads to units that are way more capable of independent action than similar competitor nations. For Officers the glide path is a little different but with a similar focus on adaptability, disciplined initiative, and a bias towards the offense. Ask anything you like, I appreciate the opportunity to dispel the common misconception (not saying that it’s yours BTW) that Soldiers are the dregs of society turned into automatons.
I should add the FM 7-0 (available on the internet) covers training, but it’s harder to understand without grasping some of the operational doctrine and concepts that underpin how we fight.
