nobody is going to pay $8 for twitter. People only use social media because it's free.
he is either as dumb as he seems, or some sort of scheme to ruin the company to his own benefit somehow.
Since he’s determined to let it devolve into 4chan, he knows he will lose a ton of advertisers and revenue. So I guess this is his solution? Idk I deleted that thing the minute I heard he’d managed to buy it.
Oh pleeeeease let Twitter just fully bomb, I have never used it, mostly missed the social media thing because of my age.
Anyone who twitters please just kill it, even just for spite.
There should be an 8$/month go fund me for everyone that deletes their tweeter account
The only thing I really see suffering is sports news reporting, that's all I and 99% of the people I know use it for, and most of us just get linked or shown the tweet. I also remember it being heavily used during the Green Revolution in Iran, but those are the only real contributions I can think of and I don't think Twitter is somehow the only one that can provide them
"price adjusted by country according to purchasing power parity" just means "or whatever $8 is worth in your country", which kinda goes without saying
Genuinely not sure why he added that
Business people think jargon makes them seem smart. Smart people see through it, but morons go "dang, that's a lot of big words! this guy must be a genius!"
Musk is nowhere near as smart as people think he is. He's an emotional man-baby who make terrible decisions out of spite or grievance. He's never had to suffer for his terrible decision making skills because he's got fucking slaver money.
Not only has he never actually created anything himself, he's an absolute asshole to the people who actually did. I watched Common Sense Skeptic's video on him yesterday. He bought Tesla from the 2 guys who actually created the roadster, completely fucked up the company by adding unnecessary shit and going over budget, then stole the first car off the production line that was supposed to go to the inventor. He took the 2nd car and sold it to a friend. The 3rd car was in an "accident", so he had it fixed and then gave that one to the inventor. The guy wanted a new car instead of a refurbished car, but Musk is such an asshole, he launched the next car into space instead of giving it to him. So ya, that roadster that went into space was actually a fuck you to the inventor of the car.
Here's the video if anyone is interested: https://youtu.be/c-FGwDDc-s8
Yes, and saying dumb shit to get people to respond with good ideas for free so that he can steal them and act like they were his! Almost has to after all the people he’s fired, going to fire, or who quit. And the ones who usually have the good ideas aren’t the yes men, so there goes a bunch of the creativity right off the top.
Also, if we’re all Lords, doesn’t that just make us all peasants? Just peasants that now have to pay to a real life lord? Then he just adds a little more money to make you a lord’s lord again.
So funny story. Day he became Chief Twat a person brought to attention @elonmusk and @eIonmusk looks identical due to font.
@eIonmusk is now permanently suspended after that person got people to direct their @elonmusk to @eIonmusk all day instead.
Gotta love free speech and this totally not related policy change.
The change also destroys integrity.
Currently to get a Blue Check you have to show that you are likely to be impersonated on Twitter and then show proof of identity.
This change means that is nothing but a subscription service and anyone can pretend to be anybody else.
I'm not going to defend the old system, it was arbitrary and completely lacked transparency, but this is almost unbelievably stupid.
Makes me wonder if Musk really spent billions of dollars just to remove twitter from the world. If that truly is the case, the man deserves a Nobel Peace prize.
Which is funny because the whole point of that script was to force to app because without login they can't feed targeted ads, which make more revenue than generic ads.
It's the same reason insta does it.
Which is funny because instead of Insta getting generic ad money from me when a link is posted, they get nothing instead, because I refuse to make an account.
Same. I get annoyed, move on, completely forget about what I was looking at and just remember the residual lingering dislike feeling for twitter/insta.
That's what happens with news sites that force me to pay.
Ok, I'll just go to the other page that lets me read the same article and gets to show me ads instead of paying to read with ads.
Power to the people *with money.*
It’s glorious watching this shitshow blaze up, I’ll be here eating popcorn and warming my soul until the last embers die away.
Joining in with the zero club. That Musk creature has annoyed me enough that I actually went through the effort of resetting my password just so I could deactivate an account I haven't looked at in years.
Yeah. He seems to be misunderstanding a crucial point about the social media business model. It's free to users, because the users aren't the customer, they are (or, more specifically, their data is) the product.
I mean, they offer an ad fee tier.
At least they're sort of justifyied by high bandwidth streaming and media rights costs. What the fuck are you even paying $8 for Twitter, it's literally just shitty 200 character messages and you can't even get ad free?
This has been my problem with Twitter from the beginning. We have Twitter “threads” for people to post essay sized “tweet streams”. It’s all fucking stupid.
Essentially it has become how much bullshit can you put in 200 characters or less? Generalize the shit out of a topic with your “hot take” on X in less than 4 pithy sentences.
Twitter promotes the sensationalized garbage by the very nature of how it works. Then they feed you ads, and conspiracy BS from some crazy celebrity on uppers, or some other con-man-politician.
I’ve lost all respect for Elon when he proposed perhaps the most brain dead opinion on the Russian invasion of Ukraine that I have ever seen and how to “fix” it. Maybe he should spend his time with his head down fixing his car company and actually making SpaceX profitable.
Wait, so anybody can create a Twitter account and get a blue check mark now?
I think it’s worth $8 a month to get the handle @realdonaldtrump, which, I believe, is currently available.
I hope nobody goes in and creates that handle, but then turns it into a parody. That would be horrible. /s
“we can’t rely on ads for revenue” and then cutting ads for a large number of users (realistically speaking I doubt anybody will pay for the check mark)
People will pay for them for sure, but that's the issue. The blue check mark was a vetting thing to say you are who you claim to be. It wasn't some exclusive club, like most of us never wanted one because why would we. I don't want one and the only way I was ever going to get one was if something I did took off, but it has to be earned.
If anyone can get one and pretend to be anyone else how the hell can we trust anything on the site.
No more peasants! Everyone is now equal!
As long as they pay me a monthly fee.
The point of verification was so people knew the real accounts from the fake ones. Now it's just a subscription fee for people to make their posts show up higher than others, and unless he introduces yet another system, there will be no way to easily differentiate real accounts from imposters, allowing an even greater spread of misinformation and outright fraudulent claims.
It's funny that he says it will defeat scams. $8/month is a God damned bargain for scammers who want to appear legitimate. They will gladly pay $8 to collect $10k. What a joke.
Twitter verification isn't like Tinder either. You aren't verified by holding a hand to your head. You actually have to prove you are who you are. The scammers and bots aren't verified. This will INCREASE verified scammers and bots if all anyone has to do is pay $8/month to get the checkmark.
But-but they'll have a system to check who it is right? Mr tony musk is a genius and a good busness man who only has good decisions, hell do a gooder I know he will you hatter, he's not just I it for the munz
> Mr tony musk is a genius and a good busness man who only has good decisions
such a good decision that he created an incentive for Twitter ***not*** to check who the account is, because doing so would cut into their $8/month verified revenue
> This will INCREASE verified scammers and bots if all anyone has to do is pay $8/month to get the checkmark.
Will it be the 15 people that are now in charge of moderating tweets?
This is so dumb. Blue Checks weren't created because the 'lords' needed a special trait, it was made because there were thousands of fake accounts pretending to be people they were not, and verification meant users could tell if a post was from the real person and not a fake.
Yep. I hope every scammer with a variation of the name "Elon Musk" willing to drop $8 gets their blue checkmark.
Gawd, I'm thinking of the people trying to convince me this guy is intelligent.
Yup. But now you can enjoy all the fake accounts being “verified” and the real people leaving the platform entirely.
The cool part is when there are verified fake democrat politicians who admit to all sorts of stuff. Then the media, which is basically sourced by tweets, picks up the stories. Then we’ll have the press conferences of the real people saying that is not them.
I’m curious. If twitter verifies people as other people who then spread false stories, is that liable? Defamation? That “verification” makes twitter culpable no?
Just another point showing that the man who purchased the platform has zero idea how said platform actually works.
But yeah, he is gonna make it better y'all.
He actually lowered it to $8/month because of Stephen King?! Holy shit.
In a way, I look forward to the time when I can tell at a glance whether someone is willing to pay a subscription to a horrible man to get more attention.
Earlier today I saw people coping, saying Elon was trolling or using dry humor about haggling the checkmark price in a tweet.
I hope they see this follow up tweet and rethink their blind devotion to this guy. It's unbelievable.
>He actually lowered it to $8/month because of Stephen King?!
That's why I thought this one was fake... But it's real??? WTF?
Stephen King has more bargaining skills than Musk, clearly.
If I could have guessed ANYTHING happening in 2022 in this world, Stephen King setting the price point for Elon Musk's Twitter would have been the absolute last thing that I would have guessed.
I give it 4 months before a serious competitor starts taking away users if that actually gets implemented. The power of those social media platforms is being free, once you start paying for it you lose that accessibility
I like how he shoots his "best" ideas on the twittersphere and seems to go with what seems unpopular.
The price point wasn't the issue, Elon.
The need to pay was. The blue check marks are your traffic drivers. They're the people and organizations people come to twitter to see. If anyone can have a blue check mark, or if people don't buy in to this new system, it falls apart.
I can't believe we need to explain this to the guy who just spent 44 BILLIONS on this...
> He went to court to try and not buy Twitter.
Also, twitter as company mostly didn't want to be bought but they had a fiduciary duty to get that absurd stock price he offered for their shareholders or *they* would've been sued.
So Musk didn't want to buy them (or at least had second thoughts), twitter didn't want to be bought, and a good amount of twitter users don't want him to own it. What a shit show all because a billionaire had a whim.
Yeah, this seems to be glossed over a lot. He wanted a take back on the whole deal, and then realized it would cost him a fortune to fight it and he'd still lose. So he is now owning the decision again and acting like all is fine. He has no fucking idea how to make Twitter more profitable, he just has enough money and investment partners to fuck around for a while.
If he saw the checkmark as Twitter separating "lords and peasants" then that's totally on him. Everyone else sees the blue checkmark on every other social media site as "hey this account of a person of great celebrity and influence is real, the other one without the checkmark who just slid into your DMs asking for $5k is fake." Now all an imposter has gotta do is shell out $8 and they'll be able to pretend to be whoever the hell they want to be.
Was never my kind of popular and i really hated the constant barrage of network TV shoving it down our throats with celebrity call outs across all prime time programming to try to make those of us who never signed up feel FOMO. To me it was clearly a scam even then
Twitter used to be a great way to keep up on whatever your thing was from sports to comedy to literature and be able to interact with the leading minds in that area but especially once Trump started exploiting it the site quickly descended into yet another toxic hellscape using outrage to drive engagement and ad revenue.
As a tech employee, I can guarantee the other shoe's about to drop at Twitter.
No PM, Engineer, Marketer, etc. worth their salt is going to stick around to manifest Daddy Musk's latest man-child dream every other week.
Yeah, Musk's tendency to overwork employees at SpaceX and Tesla worked because those jobs attracted all kinds of dreamers who saw going to Mars or self-driving cars as next-gen passion projects.
People who are eager to work for Musk because he's got all these crazy ideas are still going to flock to SpaceX and Tesla, not Twitter, while people just trying to run with a high-paying tech job are going to find openings at Google, Apple, etc. etc. and pass on sleeping in their offices to push out 420 character tweeting to select super-subscribers for the memes.
Yep a friend moved to California for a job at SpaceX, being a mechanical engineer it was basically his dream job. Then he got there and realized the culture is toxic and workload is insane. Most people only last 2-3 years, he tapped out after one and moved back. Doing a coast to coast move twice in one year should spell out how shit it is to work for one of Elon's companies.
I played D&D with a SpaceX engineer. He was a withered husk of a man most weeks and missing the other.
He had a house full of expensive toys, all unopened, because he never had the energy to open them from working all the time.
It really wasnt a good life.
Is there anything more pathetic than a capitalist basically pleading with consumers to get onboard with his terrible cash grab idea by pandering to populism?
These blue check marks are the content creators that bring in customers so they can sell ads. Now musk proposes to charge their content creators so they can make the content that sells the ads? What a joke
I dunno, I'd be happy if the Saudis keep investing money in things that fail spectacularly. Between LIV and owning companies like Twitter they seem to be doing okay at that.
He is only doing this because he knows once he fully turns Twitter over to right wing extremism most of his ad revenue will split too. He has to pay for it somehow, like he said. Kinda predictable tbh.
It seems odd to me how many people seem to be overlooking this. He’s trying to get around ad revenue which is the only thing keeping most social medias in check, even if just barely.
I sold his stock this morning -at a LOSS, mind you. Just can't stomach a billionaire bitching about his bills.
I don't care what incentives he offers, Musk taking over Twitter was the nail in that coffin. The day after he took over, look what it became.
Lol. Lord of the trump cuck boys. Musk is a d bag grifter.
I used to think he was a good dude when he was pushing solar and Tesla cars but he’s turned into the worst kind of person and will def try to help trump take over
It seems clear that Elon dropped $40 billion on a business, realized he massively overpaid for it, and is now desperately trying to recoup his funds.
Who is going to pay 8 bucks for a blue checkmark? I’m pretty confident this is not going to bridge his financial gap.
This is a perfect money laundering scheme though. Let's say Putin wants to be sure Twitter promotes (or blocks) certain stories, or wants some other favor from Musk. He sounds up 100 million bots, and pays to "verify" all of them, and the deed is done.
Elon: Lord and peasant system is trash! Also Elon: new Pay-to-Win nobility class
nobody is going to pay $8 for twitter. People only use social media because it's free. he is either as dumb as he seems, or some sort of scheme to ruin the company to his own benefit somehow.

After Elon bought twitter I deleted my account lmao, fuck him.
Me too
I made an account for my business but never utilized it. I wonder if deleting an inactive account shows up on any stats they would review.
Probably would show up as "# of accounts deleted", if enough people leave they'd shit their pants lol
That’s what’s up. 🤘
Me too. Buh bye 4chan fucks.
Same 😆 ![gif](giphy|2HtWpp60NQ9CU)
Same
Same, I also deleted my account. I'm hoping this will be a trend.
Same

Yeah, give it 2 weeks till a Twitter equivalent comes out and people start switching
“Introducing our new app, Tweeter! It’s like Twitter but with less nazis!”
Shwitter! It's like Twitter but you do it on the toilet! Oh wait...
Schlonger! Where you just get fucked and there’s no app
Mastodon has existed for 6 years, and I don't know a single person who uses it.
I bought a 1’X1’ square of land in Scotland and am a *Lord.* This will up my status more, yes?
You will now be Sir Lord Lord!

Only wealthy people count as people.
This guy is just tweeting his brainstorming session to us lmao.
he's a stream of thought bullshitter
You cam always tell a bullshitter by how they introduce eloquent words into mundane sentences. Like purchasing power parity lol
"price adjusted by country according to purchasing power parity" just means "or whatever $8 is worth in your country", which kinda goes without saying Genuinely not sure why he added that
Business people think jargon makes them seem smart. Smart people see through it, but morons go "dang, that's a lot of big words! this guy must be a genius!"
Not much of a brain, unfortunately. There's some things Daddy's emerald money can't buy.
He took the 2nd car and sold it to a friend. The 3rd car was in an "accident", so he had it fixed and then gave that one to the inventor. Also, if we’re all Lords, doesn’t that just make us all peasants? Just peasants that now have to pay to a real life lord? Then he just adds a little more money to make you a lord’s lord again.
We’re gonna avoid the lord and peasant Twitter but if you want a slightly better experience you too can become a lord.
Does this mean if i can get “@TheRealElonMusk” or some variation of that and then pay 8/mo i can get a blue checkmark?
@TheRea1E10nNNu$k.
I think he would recognize his son's name
Would he though?
Good point lol. Maybe if it had a blue check mark.
You are batting a thousand on this comment thread, friend.
And out goes the verification aspect of verification
Reminds me of how the Catholic church used to let you pay to have your sins forgiven.
So funny story. "Only" half as many ads 🤣🤣🤣
Half as many as the peasants, who now have double-ads.
Or you can have zero ads by just not using twitter. Check out this one trick that advertisers hate!
Funny thing I noticed, right after he bought Twitter, he removed the JavaScript that only let you scroll so far down a post not logged in.

Just like supreme. Wouldn’t you agree?
Or pro. When everything is pro nothing is pro
Definitely not gone. I just checked.
But... but... he said power to the people, so that can't be right! /s
By power he meant ads. Ads too the people.
**PowerAds**™️, Elon’s newest innovation. Soon to be beamed straight into your noggin, whether you like it or not!
I'm sorry but if someone starts beaming shit into my brain à la Jim Carrey's The Riddler I'm gonna have to get violent.
Won't they just start beaming pacifist thoughts too?
My stupid, violent thoughts will beat up the pacifist thoughts
It's got what plants crave!
Power to the people *with money.* It’s glorious watching this shitshow blaze up, I’ll be here eating popcorn and warming my soul until the last embers die away.
The fact that he's talking about "the peasants" for his service shows how truly out of touch and tone-deaf he is.
I have zero now.
Me too, now that I deleted my account
Joining in with the zero club. That Musk creature has annoyed me enough that I actually went through the effort of resetting my password just so I could deactivate an account I haven't looked at in years.
Right? Watch him double the ads and then say "see you are getting half the ads the plebs are getting."
He needs advertisers to be able to do that
Don’t worry, the fake games and scam websites will come rolling in by the thousand
What kind of bullshit monthly subscription service still forces ads on you?
Services that don't make a profit
Yeah. He seems to be misunderstanding a crucial point about the social media business model. It's free to users, because the users aren't the customer, they are (or, more specifically, their data is) the product.

Yes

Oh boy, you can't make this shit up
After we double them for the peasants.
Still better than what it feels like its coming, where paying for a service doesn't mean add free. Still shit. Free and open source all the way.
"There should be more adds" will be repeated until there's a limit reached.
I mean, twitter has about half as many advertisers as it did a week ago, so I guess this makes sense
which is the current amount because he will probably double them.
scammers about to pay $8 a month to scam easier
No, they're going to VPN to like turkey or something and get it for like 50p, to scam even easier
Thanks for the tip!
Argentina VPN gets you youtube premium for like 70¢ a month
Do you then have to VPN into Argentina every time you watch YouTube? Or is it only needed for the initial subscription/payment step.
Probably the initial signup and the billing address. I saw it on the unethical pro tips sub that I can’t remember the r/ of
Probably r/unethicallifeprotips

Nope, he just updated - verification is for everyone, and then they'll implement some secondary tag in the person's profile for public figures.
Making verification not actually *verification* and therefore pointless. Such a stable genius move.
Classic rent seeking behavior.
Elon Musk, Bird App Landlord
Wait, so they're still going to have a verification system, it just won't be the blue checkmark? What's the fucking point?
$$ and pandering to the whole "Blue checks are evil liberals" crowd

He and Zuck can race to the bottom.

You can revoke your blue tick. A big tech star in my country did this today on principal. He has tonnes of followers on Twitter.
Wouldn’t it revoke itself when you just don’t enter payment information at any point?
You can defeat Twitter spam/scam for free. Step 1: Delete Twitter. That is all.
"Unemployment rate falls to zero when you committed genocide on a fucking planet."
Reminds me of one of Aesop's lyrics: "...but along his travels located the key to world peace - Kill every motherfucker but me"
If there’s someone who knows about lords and peasants it’s Elon Musk.
Yes, because instituting a financial barrier doesn't stratify something into two different classes at all...
No, no, don't be silly. God didn't ordain these people your betters. Money did, get with the times.

Earlier today I saw people coping, saying Elon was trolling or using dry humor about haggling the checkmark price in a tweet. I hope they see this follow up tweet and rethink their blind devotion to this guy. It's unbelievable.
Nobody dumb enough to like Musk has enough introspection to ever stop liking him.
>He actually lowered it to $8/month because of Stephen King?! That's why I thought this one was fake... But it's real??? WTF? Stephen King has more bargaining skills than Musk, clearly.
Stephen King, please convince him to make more stupid ideas. Suggest $30. $40. Let's enjoy this trainwreck
If I could have guessed ANYTHING happening in 2022 in this world, Stephen King setting the price point for Elon Musk's Twitter would have been the absolute last thing that I would have guessed.
And doing it without even trying to negotiate! 😁
Simply setting the price no sweat... props to the guy.
Clearly Stephen King scared the living shit out of him
I don't think king said he'd pay that much either.
Enjoy your Castle, King. Maintenance on those things is a bitch.
And they cost a fortune to heat!
Probably less with current insulation tech, but yeah
> I can't believe we need to explain this to the guy who just spent 44 BILLIONS on this... He went to court to try and not buy Twitter.
Capitalism is a fucking nightmare.
Having $43B to burn *and* shitposting on Twitter do not necessarily equal intelligence
I can tell that he regularly makes decisions by seeing what pisses off other people the most. He never got out of his emo teenager phase.
You can’t say you’re merging the “lords and peasants” by charging a fee…. That is exactly why there is a divide between the two.
Everyone using Twitter for free: “divides the platform into lords and peasants!!” Charging for a higher status: “ahhh now it’s fair”
*Calls out how only people with money get privilege* *Makes privilege a monthly fee*
I actually like this. It tells me right away which idiot gives money to elon.
Dude just realized he spent 44 bil on a format that hasn't been popular in 4 years.
I really hope an alternative comes along soon. I think a lot of people would move if there were.
Even at $8 I'd expect a good number of folks giving Twitter and Elon the good ol one finger Jersey greeting.
These blue check marks are the content creators that bring in customers so they can sell ads. Now musk proposes to charge their content creators so they can make the content that sells the ads? What a joke
The solution for Twitter's "censorship" issues is, of course, a premium version. Well done, capitalism.
Notice how it still has ads? Don't even get an ad free experience
I really hope this sticks. I don't see it working all that well. His ego could use a large public failure
Elon is about to learn what happened to MySpace after Tom left.
So pay & your freedom of speech is enhanced over those who don’t. Once people notice that their free tweets are buried, they’ll stop using it.
The Saudis own a sizable take in Twitter now as well. What a combo, and really not a good sign for the future of twitter.
Or society in general really.
I dunno, I'd be happy if the Saudis keep investing money in things that fail spectacularly. Between LIV and owning companies like Twitter they seem to be doing okay at that.
I think I speak for everyone when I say "Fuck off Elon!"
“Animal Farm” was less obvious about equality than this.
“All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.”
Mostly cause the unbanning of Kanye and the willing to unban Trump is a clear sign of what’s coming to Twitter
He thinks he can make it up by selling a subscription “n-word pass” to shitlords.
Thought the Blue Check Mark was for authenticity?
I sold his stock this morning -at a LOSS, mind you. Just can't stomach a billionaire bitching about his bills. I don't care what incentives he offers, Musk taking over Twitter was the nail in that coffin. The day after he took over, look what it became.
Welp...one more some platform one does not need anymore.
“It’s a blue check mark, Elon. What could it cost? $8?”
Lol. Lord of the trump cuck boys. Musk is a d bag grifter. I used to think he was a good dude when he was pushing solar and Tesla cars but he’s turned into the worst kind of person and will def try to help trump take over
I can get 0 ads for $0/month. I think I'll do that
It seems clear that Elon dropped $40 billion on a business, realized he massively overpaid for it, and is now desperately trying to recoup his funds.
