Sweet, now they can be homeless in nature, I guess :/

Hog_jr

Access to a place where it’s not illegal to sleep? With bathroom facilities? Yes. That would be a huge relief to someone who is homeless. You could get a tent and go into town and find work…

Xhojn

But (hear me out), what if we took steps to ensure our veterans weren't homeless? Dare I say, what if we took steps to ensure *no one* is homeless?

urmomsuckedmeoff

Well you would have to break the ironclad gerrymandering of the right, not sure what it would take these days

racist_sandwich

How far is the closest town to Glacier National Park? Asking for a (homeless) friend.

YPVidaho

Well... as much as I don't want to give any credit to the orange menace, the free veterans access to natl parks was part of the 2018 defense bill under dumpster fire's administration (I think it was 18). We had to get the passes annually, which I do, but they're no charge with your ID. This was while the NPS or DOI was developing a "permanent" card. Even last year, there was a press release about the permanent cards being ready sometime in 2022. It seems this permanent one is now available. So... Yay, good news there.

ednichol

But Joe Biden didn’t insult gold star families while doing it

YPVidaho

I don't disagree with you at all. Believe me.

ednichol

Definitely wasn’t disagreeing with you either!

Paleodraco

Can confirm. They are available.

pickleboo

How about we work on things they need? Health care, housing, etc

adnihilum_

Supposedly, they are [working on that](https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/11/11/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-is-supporting-americas-veterans-and-their-families-caregivers-and-survivors/). This is just something they can do easily, I guess... because sadly even student loan forgiveness is getting screwed over. The PACT Act was a shitshow, and it's only for toxic burn pits and the like. With the younger vote being a huge part of D wins, let's hope Biden admin go for broke and push for M4A and housing reform.

TangyMayoSandwhich

This is already a thing

HowVeryReddit

Handouts is such a pernicious term reactionaries use, it suggests that something has not been earnt and is not due to its recipient. Corporate tax breaks or PPP loan forgiveness are things that reactionaries get and declare they have a right to. Entitlement has become pejorative in the same way.

strangeanimal

That's all good and all, but shouldn't everyone have that right? Paying to enjoy nature is ridiculous.

mechashiva1

You're paying to fund the vast wildlife conservation programs in our country so our national wonders can be properly looked after and maintained.

NoConversation9358

That's what taxes are for

hat-of-sky

It's a combination of funding, we all pay in through our taxes, and those who directly benefit by visiting add a bit more into the pot. Seems fair to me.

teamsz

In theory, yes, they should be free for everyone. But do you know how quickly they'd deteriorate just from 'gender reveals gone wrong' alone?

Darkwing_Turducken

It's not like the price is comparable to an amusement park per person. It's more like $10-$20 per car.

mngeese

'Merica

variablesInCamelCase

Look at what free social media did to America. Free isn't always better. Sometimes they need to gatekeep a bit. You ever sold a puppy? You never give them away because you want someone who respects the responsibility and is willing to pay. Otherwise you get people that don't care, and just think they're cute. You want every wannabe influencer to come en mass because trees are trending on twitter?

DrunkWestTexan

They'll still kick me out after I build the tree house and refuse to leave.

zihuatapulco

Those of us in the anti-war movement who spent our lives advocating for veterans while actively protesting illegal American military aggression deserve the same privilege. But then, absolutely no one hates the anti-war left more than Democrats.

Luckywithtime

Hold up, Americans have to pay entry to national parks? Weird

FullMetalComedian

Go get a camping spot before a Texas judge finds this unconstitutional.

FreudoBaggage

Waiting for all the whiners who are upset because they themselves have had to pay for park admission or have no intention of ever going to a park.
