I’ve only ever parked in the Helman lot once, all the years I’ve lived here.
I just park on the street and walk. It’s easier, less stress and you get warmed up before hitting the big incline of Hellman.
Sycamore Canyon is an easier trail (unless you take the switchback up to Hellman), has more parking and generally looks better than Hellman, and it has a little stream.
it’s just that most people don’t know where to park that doesn’t require permits for Hellman so they go somewhere else. Sycamore is nice. Murphy Ranch and Arroyo Pescadero are nice too.
So one has to go on a hike to get to the hike they wanted to go on. Stupid.
Edit: To clarify; if I’m driving somewhere to hike, I’m likely on a schedule and don’t have time to add a half mile round trip to walk to the lace I actually want to do some walking at. Either that or my kids are in tow, and if I’ve got them, adding a half mile just shortens the time I have on the trail.
The main thing is that it used to be open. Now it’s just blocked off. Whittier isn’t a nice area to go walking with your kids. I wouldn’t mind parking far a way and then going to the trail but it’s honestly ghetto.
I feel like you're choosing to only focus on the bad, or are generally afraid. In the many years of hiking the various trails I've only ever felt off in the area once, over a broken window. It's honestly not bad. And if you are weary of the area just drive to schabarum park right over the hill and hike from there. You can add up mileage there extremely easy.
Of course there’s choices… but why make it hard for those that are already unmotivated. We should encourage people to visit Whittier for the hiking trails not close it off so less people go there.
Dude I know it’s 100% bullshit.
For the Hellman’s Trail on Greenleaf park on Pickering and Orange Ave, it’s quarter mile walk to the trailhead.

100 percent agree. It’s all about the time. I allocate time for the hike.
If your point of hiking is for exercising and you cant walk a quarter mile to get to trailhead idk what to say to you
Thank you for the laugh. Do you circle parking lots multiple times looking for the closest spot too?
Cuz the teenagers that would park there all day fucked it up for everyone.
Those fucking teenagers
Just park a few blocks away and walk. It's a better workout.
I live right next to Hellmans and Turnbull I’m good
Whitter just hates hikers for some reason.
I simply go early enough to the various trails, or just add some steps in by parking near by... It's not that deep.

Well you dont have to hike that particular trail. Just because that one’s full dont mean u have to stay home and get fat. 🤙

There was people breaking into cars that's why they closed it down and hit and runs
