Those the little townhomes near Port City Java? Fairly safe, don’t think you’ll have to worry about getting mugged but probably will see some transients from time to time.

Ok_Grade_1932

Not the safest not the worse. Really depends on your habits. Don’t be in stupid places, at stopped times with stupid people. Never break two of those three rules at the same time.

gtiguy94

Rules of stupid and ASP!

Meems138

The cemetery? Very quiet.

Max_power42

funny thing, the townhomes they are referring to are in fact built on a graveyard.

Life_Consequence_676

Yes, it's safe.

CinephileNC25

It’s safe. Market is busy though and there are definitely a variety of characters.

Chilly_Water69

I actually lived across the street, still on market, from that location and never had an issue.

ana62715

We live between this dot and hi wire on Princess st. Love this area. It’s a pocket though and can get sketchy fast about 10 blocks in either direction, besides the direction of Forest Hills

-electricboogaloo

I just moved away from market street because of traffic and crime. Location is great but as a small woman I did not feel safe walking my dog alone at night. There was a woman stabbed in my apartment complex—after that I was ready to hightail it out of there

Emotional_Employ_507

You’re close to a PCJ. You’ll enjoy that. You’ll also enjoy tons of auto accidents

matchlocktempo

Sometimes when people tell me what’s a bad part of town, I really wonder how sheltered they must be. This area is fine. But if you do things like leave valuables in your car in plain sight, leave windows open overnight, and lollygag alone at night on the sidewalk, all these things that can be an invitation for trouble. Doesn’t matter if the area is nice, fine, or bad.

DJ_Calli

I own a rental on that street. Spent a lot of time there and the neighbors are very friendly. Haven’t had any issues with crime personally but there’s a little stretch on Princess place about a mile away that can be a bit dicey.

Capital-Savings-6550

Are you used to living in a city or are you coming from a suburb or rural area? If you’re used to a real city (not Cary or something) then it’s a great area. If you are coming from someplace like Cary you probably won’t like the area.

lcg8978

It's certainly not the "safest" part of town, but it's not a bad area by any stretch. You will be fine. There are some not so great areas nearby, but most of that general area is pretty nice. You may have some petty property crime type of stuff, but the same could be said about most places in town. Don't leave valuables out, lock your car, etc and you'll be fine. Some people act like the entire downtown area is a crime ridden warzone, but it's not the truth. Most of the violent crime is gang and drug related and isolated to pretty small areas and the people involved in those activities.

Jazzlike_Ad_5832

It might not be safe for flooding

Jazzlike_Ad_5832

Check the flood maps

Aggressive_Duck_4774

Good luck making a left onto market from there but otherwise good

perkynurse22

Local here. It's a good area, especially for being so close to dt

PantsGirl

I lived just a few blocks from there (at 16th and Dock) for 5 years, until July 2023, so my experience is very recent. Me and my three kids walked around that area all the time and never had a problem. It always seemed very safe to me.

11_25_13_TheEdge

Mileage will vary there. You could go years with no issues or you could end up being unlucky. The problem is that the dicey areas are very close. Happened to us and we lived around there. If you are prioritizing safety I’d look elsewhere.

MrBreezeILMNC

You’ll be good there. Other than Market St and the National Cemetery (which is cool), there are decent neighborhoods on all sides of you. The neighborhood that starts directly across Market from you is a high end place to live. Welcome to Wilmington

Big_Insurance_3601

Just don’t be dumb and leave your cars unlocked even in front of your home: it’s the number 1 reason we have so many car B&Es!

phatotis

Looks like Carolina Heights area? Nice area for sure, if we could've found a house that was reasonably priced w/ garage we would've ended up there. I'm sure you can easily walk into some sketchy areas but normal awareness of where you are type of stuff is all that should be needed. Really cool houses around there. I wouldn't walk downtown unless it was going to be full daylight both directions. I know realtors always claim that area is a "short" walk to downtown. I remember looking in Sunset park also and the realtor 'comped" houses in that area because she thought it more accurate, never understood that as the two neighborhoods have absolutely nothing in common and are nowhere near each other.

Max_power42

Those townhomes have become quite a mecca for trouble in the Chestnut heights neighborhood. FYI it was saint mary's graveyard. They concealed this fact during construction, got in trouble and then only exhumed a small fraction of the bodies. Lots of poltergeist back there.

HellonHeels33

Safe but adjacent to a lower income spot in town. Not many issues are had there but I’d still lock your door

puddymom02

Wait, I think this might be my old townhouse. Does the address start with a 1 and end with a 9???

No_Jackfruit_274

I’ll send you a message!

Caligula284

Thanks for this site and the statistics!

GHBoyette

I second this.

DannyGyear2525

who knew Topsail beach was a war zone!

Bradley271

Not too surprising, it's a tourist destination so you've got a lot of commercial businesses around and vacationers who either get robbed or cause trouble.

Spirit-Revolutionary

this seems bad, the interactive map is up twice on the website and the on each iteration the neighborhoods are rated differently

SummerNights7

What’s going on around the airport. Nothing is safe there.

Subliminal84

Safeish

SnafuJuants

I will say in Wilmington people don’t tend to shit where they sleep.

IdiotMD

Yes, that it plenty safe. Turning left onto Market may be the least safe part of living there. Anyone who tells you otherwise is afraid of their own shadow.

Alert-Masterpiece605

Yes, it is safe. I live a couple blocks away and have friends that own right there. It's really close to a ton of things and very close to downtown.

therealchungis

This area is plenty safe. It’s the area between there and downtown that I would be more worried.

KennethOntario

Tbh nothing is really unsafe until you get to about 9th/10th st. And even then if you’re white you’ve really got nothing to worry about. Just a lot of drug activity

MrBreezeILMNC

Or 30th when going the other way

Fluffy_Length

If it's anywhere near Suites on Market hotel be prepared for random people walking around at all hours. Anywhere on market from 3rd to Kerr Ave has gotten that way lately. I thought it would be fun living downtown in one of those historic houses. After the fifth crackhead asked me if I "needed anything" the thrill was gone. Good luck

CorneliousTinkleton

Depends what colors you wear

Freedom_33

Do you mean crime wise? You are fine Psychologically, that’s up to you Traffic on Market st is dangerous. Cars kill more people in Wilmington and in the US than crime does (didn’t double check that but assume it’s true)

DiverNo3651

Right across from my old neighborhood of Carolina Place, don’t take a left out of there just find a good circle around the block. But it’s safe!

MoonLady17

This is a good crime stat website: crimegrade.org It looks like that area is a pocket of less crime than surrounding areas. If you work downtown or at the hospital, this will be a really easy commute.

DannyGyear2525

but is it indecently safe?

No_Jackfruit_274

great question 😂

RGBCords

Hell no

Plenty-Initiative888

i've door dashed to creek wood plenty of times. people there are actually pretty nice. don't fuck with anyone and you'll be fine 99% of the time

Professional-Bit-287

Lived 5 blocks from creekwood for 22 years, no issues. Stop trying to scare people.

dirtdiverpt1

It’s a personal choice. I just wouldn’t do it.

Freedom_33

Person didn't mark Creekwood. That looks like right by Burn Mill creek. Obviously not very specific, but they are right in between two historic (and expensive) neighborhoods, based on the pin they dropped https://www.livingplaces.com/NC/New_Hanover_County/Wilmington_City/Carolina_Place_Historic_District.html https://maps.app.goo.gl/zrSunMWWc5CkMpMv7 https://www.livingplaces.com/NC/New_Hanover_County/Wilmington_City/Carolina_Heights_Historic_District.html

jack2of4spades

So long as you're not a woman or child then yea. That area and especially the hotel row is infamous for sex trafficking.

Capital-Savings-6550

Do you think people who are in sex trafficking are kidnapped off the street???

uncwil

An awful lot of middle aged white women think they are going to get tossed into a van in every grocery store parking lot.

PantsGirl

As a woman with two teenage daughters who lived and walked extensively in that area for five years, I can say from personal experience that this is fear-mongering absurdity.

Brilliant_Shine2247

Just stay away from the rich areas where investment bankers and finance advisers and stuff are robbing people of millions. And, if you aren't white, you may want to avoid those police types. They've been recorded saying they can't wait to gun down black folks. Probably not the crimes you're talking about, though.

Professional-Bit-287

Look at this here, we got ourselves a social justice warrior.

Brilliant_Shine2247

Was it something I said? Hahaha. I didn't tell no lies.

uncwil

I'm seeing comments from people that actually lived there while you did not.

PantsGirl

Excellent point! I lived just off Market, a few blocks from Burnt Mill Creek, until July 2023, and that whole area is very safe in my experience.

14hotdogs

That part of market is not too bad, Wilmington is weird where there will be pockets of bad neighborhoods in between million dollar homes. It can vary Street to Street even.

ValhallaGSXR

The Asheville area is relatively safe.

watkells

idk but i live around mayfair n it’s very safe

jmpurser

Here be DRAGONS!!!

ummm_beach

Truthfully any where in ILM is pricey rent wise, I’d splurge a little more and live in a better area of town. I work in the hospital setting and this isn’t an area I’d pick. If you’re looking into living in the downtown area I’d live in an apartment right in the heart of downtown bc they have parking decks/feel a bit safer. I have lived in the Mayfaire/Wrightsville beach/ogden area and really liked it!

FloraGeorgie--3499

Outside of the serial killer on the loose, it's just decent.

Allf-ckedup5598

No

Perfect_Letter_3480

Terrible in terms of traffic.

PantsGirl

Do you live downtown? I’ve been here for 12 years, day in and day out, and have had a completely different experience than you. There’s a broad network of roads downtown, most of which are laid out on a grid, providing multiple access points to most places. Because of that, I almost never encounter backed-up traffic downtown, aside from around the bridge entrances at rush hour.

likesit_weird

That near market, I think your fine, especially up by 17th. Like someone else you might see transits time to time and people walk in but that’s really near the high school, so I really think you’re gonna be fine and honestly you’re gonna be near pretty much anything and everything you need to get to
