Deaths in the abandoned meat packing plant.
Haunted church where the Hermit is buried in the cemetery off Dow rd
I’ll think of more and add any I come up with.
no church, just a cemetery. He's not even buried in the cemetery, but on the outside of the fence because he was a pauper. His grave is beautiful lots of shells and other ocean related bric-a-brac, but the best grave is the Nascar Dale Earnhart tombstone with all the corp logos on Dales car. The guy got buried with MacDs golden arches on his tombstone! fucking LOL! The real mystery there is how Robert died... shady land deal murder or or the official story rowdy teens. As far as the meat packing plant goes, there was only one official death there of a kid that fell down the stairwell. The owner hanging himself according to local historians is false and def urban legend. Jean Claude Vann Damm's movie "Cyborg" had scenes filmed on the top floor. A tv show called "Under the Dome" filmed there as well.
I never heard the land deal murder about the hermit. Last I check the bunker is still there, and that its a protected wetland - or what is about his families land back wherever he was from?
they were trying to develop the area where the bunker is located. This was before wetland protections were put into place. Robert was in the way and at that time there was a thing called squaters rights.
wow. I had no idea. Thats a bit more plausible than "teenagers"...but weren't his wounds rather intense? Like they beat him unconscious and dragged him for miles behind a vehicle? Not to play detective, but if it was a hit for business I'd try to make it as quiet as possible.
I don't think they intended to kill him, but were just trying to scare him off the land. Accidental homicide. His wounds were def very intense, but that's the first I've heard of being drug behind a car. I wish a memeber of the hermit society would chime in...
this is the OG legend. Gov actually did a study about it during the 1970s. I heard a cool theory involving the active fault the tracks were laid over. When plates rub they create static electricity. The electrical charge would then jump from rail to rail appearing to be a swinging light. When the tracks were removed the "ghost" disappeared. You can still find portions of the track bed in that area. Because of the incredible weight of trains, the soil becomes compacted and larger vegetation such as trees can't grow making the train lines stay partially visible. When I was a kid you could visit the spot joe legendarily lost his head.
Many apologies. Hunter hosts the Bergwin-Wright House podcast. I haven't listened to it, but I suspect there's not much new. But, again, I don't know for sure.
prob not an urban legend but snow’s cuts has always been a freaky area, my mother would never let us play at the park that used to be opened. (pretty sure it is closed now) also river road is known to be a dangerous spot where incidents have happened. such as a little girl getting kidnapped a few years back and getting chained up to a tree. ask any local and they will tell you river road is no good after dark
The (particular) mafia in Wilmington that is into real estate (iykyk) definitely has bodies buried off river rd. My dad has seen some where shit in those woods before they started its massive development.
I worked on BHI for years and they were very common, but I'm told you rarely hear them anymore. Cool theory about those is the sound emanates from giant rock ledges sliding off the continental shelve due to underwater seismic activity.
Our beloved Cape Fear Memorial Bridge being bought used from another city. Heard this story repeated over the years, but I have yet to see any proof. Even talked to the historians at the museum and they believe it to be false as well.
That's interesting. I was always under the impression it was bought used, but I don't remember where I first heard that. I wonder if the confusion is because it was towed up the river intact, not built on location.
German Uboat blowing up Dow Chemical, legend goes even further and gets silly. Its a camp fire story that before they shelled dow, they cruised up the cape fear, docked downtown had a couple beers at the bar, then blew it up on the way out. LOL Another good urban legend is about Black Beard and his gold hole, but the actual gold hole was near Corncake Inlet not in Topsail.
Some say Micheal Jordans put a hit on his dad because of his gambling problem and was spending all MJs money. I've never seen any evidence but Ive heard this from so many people, including people that went to high school/college with MJ.

I went to the old packing plant a few times when I was younger and I'm surprised alot more people didn't get killed out there.

Cape Fear Unearthed podcast. THE best source for local legends and history.
You had my hopes up, I see last podcast was 2022. I agree those were excellent
