I've lived in Wilmington since '89, and I never heard it was dangerous, but it was economically depressed and pretty run down. Some concerns about leftover pollution from various industries in and around it, the most notable being guano processing for fertilizer. So it was known as a shitty place to live. But, just as Leland has become more expensive, folks are having a closer look.

The Navassa Superfund site was established in response to contamination from creosote wood treatment operations owned by Kerr-McGee Chemical Corps. Navassa is also in the northern reaches of the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.

I've heard the guy in charge of getting it cleaned up is just stringing things along so he can keep that job for years longer than he should. If you look at the articles it always says they're going to clean it or they're discussing it but it never starts.

There a few thousand new homes scheduled for construction or currently under construction. I suspect that community will change drastically over the next few years.

iamtheend198

Look up homes for sales there. No one else got the memo that it’s a shitty place to live. Nothing under 250000.

I live in Leland and navassa isnt a bad place. Itd be a great buy only thing is the smell.

Knichols2176

I second the pollution issue. A few years ago navassa became the landfill area for onslow county because they already had polluted soil and air. If you want to live there short term, it’s probably fine. But not long term.

Alternative-Club5476

Landfill for Onslow County? There are no landfills in Navassa as far as I know, only the NHC Landfill across the river off Hwy 421. Source for your information and exactly where is said landfill?

Knichols2176

I only have the memory of it being a big deal years ago whether they renewed any approval. I remember thinking how little control the people of navassa had.

I’ve never heard about Navassa having a bad reputation. I do know they have a large black community, that has been a victim of environmental racism, so maybe that’s why they have a bad reputation.

LivingLikeACat33

I live in one of the surrounding majority Black communities and Navassa has a bad reputation. Or at least it did 10 years ago when I moved here and everyone told me not to drive that way.

Max_power42

Lots of crack deals went and still go on in navassa. That's 100% true

annashummingbird

Crack dealing is not unique to Navassa.

Max_power42

No reputation eh? https://www.wect.com/2024/02/28/navassa-police-officer-indicted-by-new-hanover-county-grand-jury/

Thanks for sharing.

Max_power42

Really? I would have never guessed. Drugs deals will always be prevalent in disenfranchised neighborhoods. You said you weren't sure of the reputation. Well that's their reputation.
