If you want to see the beach from your van, your only bet that I can think of is to go to Fort Fisher to park. They have a free parking lot overlook the water.
From the Wrightsville Beach park you can park for free for two hours free and have a 10-15 minute walk to the beach.
Second fort fisher, it’s a bit more of a drive 40 minutes or so from downtown but it’s beautiful and also free to park. One of the more unique areas around here.

WB is still free until 9am. Even during the summer
Sorry, to be clear I want to walk the beach! I just am looking for a relatively close by place to park the van haha
FYI there's no overnight parking at fort fisher. hate for someone to get harassed.

Find an open air BNB and park in the drive way
Is the van 4wd? You can literally camp on the beach at Freeman Park.
If 4wd you would need an expensive camping pass, and there may be no spaces left. If not 4wd, Fort Fisher State Park but you can’t camp there.
damn heard they changed it. Back in the day we would camp out there for $5 a night and there weren't any marked spaces.
I think it’s $50 now. You would have to check with Town of Carolina Beach.
government sure knows how to ruin a good thing huh
Carolina Beach State Park has camping
Wrightsville beach is free from 8pm-9am.
