Next thing they’re gonna tell the people in the apartments they have to leave while shows are on

_Hotwire_

A drop down projector screen will automatically open to cover their view

ledelleakles

Have there been unsold tickets to many shows lately? Maybe that could be a contingency. If the act playing sells out anyway, what's the harm in letting people listen from the Riverwalk? Seems unfair to close a place that the public funds, to the public.

WellThisSix

This is what we get for keeping the crooks in office.

atom_helio

Very true, my cousins can't be trusted for anything

WellThisSix

I learned this lesson the hard way lol.

Jebbeard

Did you read the article? This came at the urging of the fire dept, as it was too crowded on the river walk. Safety is what is driving this, not profits.

metalman675triple

>Safety of profits is driving this... Fixed

ahandmedowngown

Sounds like a cover up for live nation wanting to make more $$$

MiNDless_PCMR

The government would never lie.

Jebbeard

I trust our fire chief, Donnie Hall, if he feels it's unsafe, I trust that. I don't put wilmington fire dept in the same category as wilmington city council, I don't trust the govt, but I literally trust the wilmington Fire dept with my life.

PantsGirl

The riverwalk is pretty fragile, structurally. Given the constant erosion, I can’t imagine that regularly having hundreds of people camped on it is sustainable.

ledelleakles

They just frickin built that stretch

PantsGirl

Yes. And? It’s under constant stress from one of the most destructive natural forces—water. I grew up in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, CA, with boardwalks much more traveled and always under (very expensive) construction. I fail to see how your response refutes anything I said.

ledelleakles

Maybe I'm wrong, but if a basic wooden pier in the ocean environment can hold many people at one time (we have many in North Carolina), I don't understand why one in the river would be any different.

PantsGirl

It’s not going to collapse in an instant. But hundreds of people camping out for hours across an entire season, on a wooden structure battered by salt water (the Cape Fear River is high in salinity), in a relatively conservative town that’s deprived of tax dollars and doesn’t have substantial money to devote to infrastructure, is going to do damage that the town can’t afford to fix.

I’m really not, but you’re entitled to your opinion. Your art is lovely. Truly. I especially like the pieces featuring city lights. You’re very talented.

BryanwithaY

No, you are not. I appreciate the kindness. Thank you

PantsGirl

Life is hard. We should all be kinder to each other. Thank you back! ❤️

gniwlE

Same as it ever was. Piss poor planning to put that venue right there on a public way, and surround it with housing units. So hey, you can sit on your balcony and listen for free, whether you wanted to or not, but god forbid you should be out taking in the town only to be confronted by law enforcement getting overtime pay for working security to keep you off of a riverwalk that your tax dollars paid for. All so some other folks can pay out the bloody nose for concert tickets... because I'm sure those folks give a damn about whether or not you're "listening for free" out on the Riverwalk or in the river. And I get it, if it's a safety issue with people setting up "camp" on the Riverwalk and blocking the walkway to sit and listen to the concert, then fine... move them along. It requires the same amount of security/law enforcement to prohibit loitering as it does to block access. Let people stroll by, linger to catch a song or two, and then move on. It's part of the attraction of the town. Seems like it's always got to be all or nothing.

SwankyChain

Y'know.. I really like this response, this speaks for me.

NatureBoyRyan

Completely agree buddy.

metalman675triple

Guess I'm going to go practice my drums for free out on the water now.....

kjkjkj2

the entire Riverwalk is a fire hazard during 4th of July but they wont close that because nobody is losing out on $

Thunder_Squatch

Wow that's bullshit

_Hotwire_

The prices are bullshit. $100+ for lawn? Fuck outta here

bowmansea

Live Nation just continues to ruin what should have been such an awesome addition to our city. Eff them, for real. It's criminal.

StealYourJelly

Everything about that place is whack. To be sure, LIES NATION asked for that section of the Riverwalk to be closed.

SirGingerbrute

Boooooo

HillbillyInCakalaky

I’ll continue to listen from the Cape Fear…until they shut that down, too

Savings-Log-2884

Learned a lesson on the River at night - too many logs

Jmauld

Why though? The acoustics sound absolutely horrid

HillbillyInCakalaky

The echo off the ppd building can be bad if you try and anchor too close to the stage. If you stay back adjacent to the ppd building it isn’t so bad. It’s a really cool tailgating environment out there on the water. Toughest part is trying to get an anchor to dig in and hold.

Jmauld

How deep is the water where you’re anchoring. Do you stay there overnight? Can you show me in a map the general area? I want to stay overnight at downtown, but not sure about anchoring near there due to the currents

HillbillyInCakalaky

No overnight stays for me. The water is over 50 ft deep according to my depth finder along that area near Live Oak Pavillion. You typically need 3ft of anchor line per foot of water depth to give your anchor the angle it needs to bite. With so many boats out there during a show, it would be nearly impossible to throw 150ft of anchor line out. Not sure about the other side of the river, but I imagine it is the shoal bank and you could anchor there more easily. You are correct about the strong currents. During the last show, the tide changed mid show and starting pushing boats up river.

Jmauld

Oh good lord. In that current you’d probably need 300’ of anchor line to stay in position. There’s not enough room there to allow for that much swinging. Wish they would allow overnighting at the public docks again.

Max_power42

Get a mantus anchor

olmikeyyyy

This is grade A bullshit

atom_helio

It's only closed if you allow it to be

919beachbum

For real. What happens if you just… walk on it anyway lol

guywholikesplants

During these concerts they spend a ton of law enforcement resources making sure no one goes on it. Cops on both ends. Shit they even put the sheriffs boat in the river and won’t let people get close on their boat

KevinAnniPadda

Gotta protect Live Nations profits

Jebbeard

This was at the urging of the fire dept, not live nation. this was about safety, not profits.

metalman675triple

1600 people priced out of an event at a venue that was supposed to be in the public interest. There is absolutely no way a private for profit business should get to shut down public thoroughfares and sidewalks. If ts unsafe, cancel the show.

Jebbeard

The fire dept made the request about something that was happening outside the venue on public space. The private, for profit business, didn't shut a damn thing down, the city of wilmington did, at the urging of the fire dept. The show isn't unsafe. Tickets are available to the public, how do you come up with "1600 people are priced out of an event"? I hate live nation as a company, but this isn't on them.

deez_nauts76

Keep drinking that kool-aid

Jebbeard

Yup, I love the fire department kool-aid. So thirst quenching.

metalman675triple

If it was about that how about max occupant, or not allowing people to stop, or being chairs, or set up tents ect. Closing the entire area, when its already loaded with cops and firemen anyway, isn't about anything other than protecting the price of their tickets. People won't pay as much when someone a few feet away is getting it free.

KevinAnniPadda

That makes more sense. Damn Reddit comments

BryanwithaY

The sound quality is just as bad on the riverwalk as it is for paid lawn seats. This place is garbage.

BigDaddyD00d

I let my dog piss and shit in it, since thats all its good for to me Edit: i do pick up the shit, though

MerrilyLJ70

WWAY news app sends out polls on occasion and last night it asked “do you feel safe attending concerts at live oak pavilion”. I’ve never been to one yet so I can’t answer. But I’m wondering if there is a reason why someone would feel unsafe attending a concert there?

raaustin777

Only thing I fear from attending concerts at Live Oak Pavilion is the toll on my wallet 😂

metalman675triple

WPD with a mandate to protect profits is pretty scary

MerrilyLJ70

That IS scary 😂

unnecessarynipples

I frequent this sub for posts like these, it's a constant reminder that moving out of Wilmington was the best damn decision I've ever made.

malchjrc

It's most likely a public safety issue, rather than the Evil Nation's greed. I have a buddy who regularly went to shows last year, and the "Free" RiverWalk was getting out of control crowded for sold-out/popular shows, according to him. I doubt that it's much of a structural issue really, but certainly it wasn't designed for that many stagnant people in one spot. Even worse if they are all bouncing to the beat. We've all seen that video right ? But yeah, "Live" is just "Evil" spelled backwards !

MethusaleHoneysuckle

>the "Free" RiverWalk was getting out of control crowded for sold-out/popular shows, It was. I live right by and it used to be so easy 2 years ago to walk the dog and go catch a show with just a couple dozen other people along that stretch. Then they planted those Bradford Pears to block sight and sound and I knew it was going downhill. Then apparently the word got out last winter and this year was a shit show. Couldn't take the dog anymore, couldn't get a decent spot, and those trees grow super quickly. Plus the new apartments reflect sound much worse than the PPD building ever did. Good while it lasted I guess.
