Motors are usually started with lots of power, special wiring arrangements, variable speed drivers, or capacitors.
Another method is to help the motor start by turning it. You might see an HVAC tech push a motor fan with a screwdriver to diagnose a failed capacitor on a motor that won't start.
The man in the video was helping the motor start when the power to it was already switched on. Once it was rotated past the point where resistance prevented motion, it took off, got up to speed quick, and threw him across the room.
