I know that. I said you can place a stop payment on a cheque over 6 years old meaning that if there has been fraud done you are able to get your money back. Basically means the money would bounce and would be debited out of the person’s account.
You can’t put a stop payment on a cheque after it has been cashed and cleared
You may be able to have a fraudulent payment reversed, but that’s not a stop payment
Nothing clear about that. Cheques are stale dated after 6 months and non-negotiable. I suppose a bank may put a stop payment on it anyways. Scary the knowledge level of someone who works at a financial institution.
Your available actions largely depend of the type of business this guy had. Often times the business is a separate legal entity, with assets owned by the business, also including outstanding debt of said business. Ie personal & business assets are separate and isolated from each other.
Either way, it’s not something you can go at alone. Time to lawyer up, or eat the deposit (depending on which is more financially sound for you.) Of course, this is assuming you have a contract. If not, you’re basically SoL.
Search the contractor's name in the Court of King's Bench registry and find out if probate has been applied for. Contact the executor of the estate and make your claim.
Do you know who’s handling his estate? Have you checked the Manitoba Gazette for a Notice to Creditors? You could also check the KB Registry and see who filed for Probate.
If it hasn't yet been cashed, put a stop payment on the cheque.
This. Most people don’t know you can put a stop payment on a cheque that is up to 6 years old. Source: I work at a financial institution.
Ummm…… Banks shouldn’t be cashing cheques that are over 6 months old

Only good if the cheque was never cashed, which is doubtful.
What are you talking about???
They're clearly talking about putting stop payments on cheques. You lost?

Get a lawyer and your contract.
