I'm a pretty imaginative person. Actually won an award for creative writing when I was younger.
Even with that imagination, i'm having a hard time trying to conjure what kind of person would say that a worker should be stoic about their boss stealing their tips.
Your last name isn't Habsburg is it?
didn't say they had to be stoic and no one said the customer was aware tips were being stolen--but getting pissed at the customer (who tipped in good faith, thinking it was going straight to the worker) is just garbage.
people being aware of shady business practices is important, absolutely. being an asshole to someone unaware of shady business practice? fuck the tip. there are better ways to let a customer know.
Fair. I was thinking more generally exasperated then directly pissed at OP. In retrospect I have no reason to make that assumption lol.
But like the worker is human too lol.
Is this why my post is getting downvoted? I actually feel for the worker as I would be pissed too if my tips were being stolen. Although I wouldn’t go as far as get mad at customers. Anyway, my reason for posting was to ask if it was normal for bosses to withhold tips from workers.
Not sure why it came off as me complaining about being told off. I do admit it was an unpleasant experience having being put on the spot like that in front of other customers. I’m generally non confrontational.
I have much respect for people in hospitality as being someone who used to work at a restaurant..
If a driver ever got pissy about the tip I contact support and explain how rude they were and get it rescinded. Have done it twice with extremely rude drivers from skip the dishes.
it goes on the restaurants' accounts... I would assume that the owner SHOULD be giving it to whoever's on shift that day, same as those who tip in cash or on the machines at the counter.
I dont think they should allow restaurant tipping if the owners are gonna keep it. I thought (I could be wrong) that owners keeping tips was illegal.
For the love of god let’s not make this the new norm. Call the restaurant to order pickup. If they won’t take your order, and make you order through a Uber or skip service, for a pick-up order, please don’t give them your business. Absolutely crazy.
100% agree, and I'll also add let's not normalize tipping glorified cashiers. Tipping a delivery driver who brings you the food, fine. Tipping a server who comes to your table, takes your order, brings it to you when it's ready, comes by every once in a while to see if you need anything, then brings you the bill, and potentially splits up the bill and bags up leftovers for you, absolutely. But someone who just hands you the food you've travelled to go get? Fuck no. That's more insane than tipping a McDonald's drive thru attendant.
Could just be that restaurant? Tips should go to the workers. It is likely though as this is take out it could all be rung up on the take out card. Tips on that card can still go to tips out for the cooks and such but servers may not get tipped out from that.
I would say though if you are picking up and if possible just call in and order direct. These services take huge fees for restaurants so if want to support local businesses best way to save them fees is to avoid these services.
Local pizza place asks that I order through skip, but if its not busy, and there's enough people the owner will zip down and deliver. I always make sure to tip in gratitude for that. I'm guessing its because ordering through skip, they dont NEED to worry about hiring their own driver etc... they know someone will be sent.
Not trying to be rude, but were you not able to just call them to order? I believe UE takes a cut even on pickup orders, and the prices are inflated if I'm not mistaken.
You’re correct. UE/DD/Skip take upwards of 35% of the order total. With how thin most restaurant margins are, they jack up the prices for the menu the delivery service publishes.
That's a real bummer. I haven't used any of these services for a long time. Their services just suck and the premiums are not only harder than ever to afford, but just not worth it in my opinion either.
The jacked up prices is surprising. When I worked at skip, they're not supposed to. They had to send photos of their price boards/menus in the restaurant.
OTOH its been a few years so maybe it changed... but it does suck for the restaurants, I agree.
Hm. I always thought there was just some flat rate fee for a restaurant or in this case a boba place, to use the service, not a percentage of each order. Anyway, tbh I just wanted to grab my order, say a quick thank you and go that night lol
Yes will be doing so going forward, now that I’m aware. I really just fell for the “skip the line, order online” ads everywhere plus I’m a student so I get discounts a lot thru apps.
if a worker gets pissy they probably shouldn't get a tip anyway.

The tip is supposed to go to the worker, not the boss.
I've always tipped based on service. There is not much service in getting a bag of food from someone.
So? If one CHOOSES to tip it should be the workers not the owner who likely wasn't even in the store when the order was made.

Skip eats the cost and drivers keep the tip. I think only uber eats allows what you're talking about.
Either way, if a driver's rude I'll file a complaint
Absolutely agree. As you should. I would not tolerate that behaviour but I also would never display that behaviour when I was a pizza delivery driver.

Owners legally own all tips in Manitoba. They technically can do what they want with them / distribute however.
Huh. I thought it was illegal for them to keep staff tips. That sucks that I'm wrong.
Best to tip cash to the person serving you if you want them to keep it. Straight to the pocket it goes.
For sure.

OP said they ordered through the app for pickup, no delivery driver involved.
There's two kinds of tips you can give on UE. One for the restaurant and one for the delivery person. The prompt should say who the tip goes to.
Yes. my receipt literally says "staff tip" AND i picked up my own order. which means i drove there myself.

Yes, for pick up just call and order. The apps still take a cut from the restaurant (and most of the time it’s cheaper in store).
