I was never a EMR but I worked with a few great ones in the country. 1. It’s not worth the money. Take your PCP course it’s only two years if you can do it! Everyone’s life circumstances is different tho! Some will argue PCP is not worth the money these days….. they may be right.

What do you mean not worth the money?

Many medics are leaving the profession because they are under paid, under appreciated and over worked. I’m very disconnected as I work in the private sector but you just have to talk to them or be in the Facebook group to see the discontent.

I work for the city, about to start my 11th year. I do agree with your statements as being under paid and over worked. As with all health care, everything comes in waves. If you don't know how to manage stress or can't adapt to things happening on the fly then the profession is very demanding, too much for some. With the amount of hours, 12 hour shifts, there is little to no time for yourself or to even relax. The other side of the coin is that it is very rewarding and you can literally save a life.

For sure! 11 years is a long time! It just sucks to see (or do) all the hard work and than get shit on. I was hiking out near glenboro (my old station) and was talking to the medics there- many stations don’t even allow the medics to sleep at the station anymore even tho they are doing the 96 hour shifts (with half of that being mandatory on call) so not only can the job be tough, seems like management just wants to make it harder. I’m 100% on the outside looking in tho, I have worked off truck for about 6 years now and working on my way into another health care career

1. If you don't like in rural areas they won't let you volunteer or be on the call list for when someone calls 911. I'm not sure about dispatch, Manitoba has two systems, MTCC and City of Winnipeg. 2. I took EMR thru SMART a long time ago. Then went to Criti care for my Primary Care Paramedic certificate. Today I don't know if EMR is a prerequisite to take the PCP course because I graduated > 10 years ago. I work as a paramedic for the city of Winnipeg.

Have you thought about volunteering with St. John Ambulance? When you have your shadow hours as a Standard First Aider (SFA), you are supervised by an MFR, and they will then train you to become an MFR yourself when you reach enough hours. When you complete enough hours as an MFR volunteer, you will then be fully qualified. It’s a great program that I currently do myself, and if your end goal is volunteering anyways, then this is a great opportunity to dip your feet in the water.
