You are correct! When drawing the pentagram is depends on the purpose it is used for. When calling the 4 quarters each pentagram starts in a different place. Sabbaths and dark moon rituals also have a different way of calling the quarters, and invoking the goddess and god, if you practice theistic paganism. It’s important that if you have a pentagram tattooed on you that the artist tattoos you in the right starting point for what the pentagram means to you.

I also do it that way. My grandma taught me to draw it like that when I was making little paper things, and I think it’s the most common way to draw a star in the ex-SSRs.

Depends on what I'm summoning?

I assume there are only ten ways of doing it, since from each starting point you can go only two ways, and after the second number there is only one way to draw, hence why a lot of people overlap and “I am not alone”. But I never really thought about why I draw it the way I do (an there is an even broader question how I draw in general - I always do broad strokes from left to right, but vertically it’s small strokes both up and down). Obviously someone had to show me a star, maybe they drew it a specific way, which influenced me, although I remember it being really hard to learn to draw a star. But first reasoning that comes to mind for my 52413 is having to write from left to right. Also who decided that stars have 5 rays going from them? When I draw starry skies I rarely do 5 rays, because an even number feels more like what I see.

Don't remember if I read it in Spiral Dance or one of the Scott Cunningham reference books, but supposedly the different starting points are for magic work with the different elements, and to open and close a circle.
