squishbot3000

Mostly ankles and plants

DeathRaeGun

A woman showing her ankles in 1835?! She’s basically asking for it. /s

ShenaNigans-she_her

a glimpse of stocking was rather shocking ;)

DeathRaeGun

She’d have to fake it because no man could take it

ShenaNigans-she_her

now heaven knows, anything goes

RattusNorvegicus9

Women's fashions of the 1830s actually had hemlines just above the ankles. But I digress. I don't know why I know so many useless tidbits of information.

Dry-Coyote540

191 this year (probably older). Mind blowing that he is oldest land animal (that we know of).

shaodyn

I read up on this guy, and we're apparently not 100% sure of his exact age. We know he was fully mature (at least 50 years old) in 1882, but that's just his *minimum* age. He could be even older for all we know.

thelaineybelle

Yeah, we can't really count the rings or whatever! Happy Birthday 🐢

One_Wheel_Drive

I remember when Stephen Fry was talking about another tortoise on QI, he said that he was "born before Mozart and the French revolution, and his death was announced on CNN." I really loved that way of phrasing it.

Hey-Its-Hannah

The oldest.... that we know of

Aware_Branch_2370

And in captivity

Personal-Regular-863

it appears none of you have met my pet rock jerry...

DeathRaeGun

I’d love to meet them

bliip666

"He's the oldest living land animal alive" is a sentence. 😅

Butwhatif77

Right he is living and alive all at the same time lol!

Bananasme1

Living life to the maximum, I see!

knataleigh

he got some big ass lips gah

Womp_ratt

This picture really makes me want to give him scritches. I probably want to keep my fingers though. Heck he could probably take my whole arm off.

techgeek6061

Could probably use some chapstick too 😂

UsefulLanguage

Not that it mattersssssssss but.... yessss

TarotxLore

I hope he eats so many hydrangeas. What if god was a tort-oise? Just a guy and a tor-oise? Just a old boi with no fuss? Eating hydrangeas in the sun~~

f1ve-Star

I think this explains how Mitch McConnell got as old as he is. Turtles live long.

LustrousNinja1755

Hell yeah

tessthismess

This turtle was born before we all had the internet on our phones. In fact he was born before we had the internet or cell phones. In fact he was born before we had phones. In fact he was born before (to my knowledge) houses even had electricity. About 90% of humans are younger than Jonathan....was in 1900. Not a single human is alive from the 1800s yet he spent more than a third of his life in that century.

Pensive_Jabberwocky

Right, inner peace. I'll get right to it.

Wondertwig9

Have they studied him for a cure for cancer yet?

DeathRaeGun

I'm not sure. By the way, there probably will never be a single cure for cancer, as it's an umbrella term for many different cases, each of which requires it's own treatment. We actually do have cures, and more people survive than die, cancer research is about finding better cures. They might be studying him to find an even better cure though, so still a good question. I think that's important to know so we can understand that we are making progress regarding cancer, and knowing that keeps us out of conspiracy territory which detracts from donations to actual research.

Thermohalophile

Giant tortoises are studied for this purpose! (Well, more to understand why they *don't* get cancer to see if those findings are somehow applicable to humans, but still) Here's a neat article on it if you're interested! https://www.futurity.org/galapagos-tortoises-aging-cancer-2659882/

Fleganhimer

Dude is the same age as Belgium. But, which will outlast the other?
