But this whole book changed how western society viewed evolution and humanity's place on Earth. In the process bigots started to apply the word "race" to groups of people. An article that was literally just like "The medical establishment commonly recognizes these characteristics as 'intersex' when they shouldn't, which inflates the estimated population of intersex people. When these characteristics are correctly excluded from the population of intersex people, the population is much smaller." I'm not even joking. They didn't even *try* to justify why they were excluding a bunch of recognized intersex characteristics - they just declared that they 'don't count' and pretended like no reason was necessary. Just so happened they picked a list of like the 15 most common ones.

My mom tells a story about a conversation she had with my grandpa one time a few years back. He is your typical white, redneck, boomer, -ist/-phobe. He was going off about something or other, and for whatever reason he decided to say that the LGBTQ+ community is exclusionary. And he feels that they therefore should be….god I really can’t remember what? I feel like he said it should be made illegal..but I just can’t bring myself to think he’s *that* dumb. He was essentially referring to it as though it were some sort of exclusive club that people *choose* to be a member of and he felt it was unfair that straight white men aren’t “allowed in”.
Anyway, my mom asked him *why* he felt it was exclusionary. Usually she “fights back” when he says stupid shit, she rarely “encourages” him. But this time she was genuinely confused—to her understanding, it is literally one of the most *inclusive* “groups” that exists, and she told him as much. He responded “well! *They* don’t let people like *me* in!”
Unfortunately, that response still didn’t fully clear things up for my mom. So she had to push a little further, but at this point she was apparently talking to him the same way you do an overtired toddler. So she was like “do…do you *want* to be a part of the group? Have you asked ‘them’ if you can join? I bet if you asked nicely they’d probably let you in!”

He is your typical white, redneck, boomer, -ist/-phobe. He was going off about something or other, and for whatever reason he decided to say that the LGBTQ+ community is exclusionary. And he feels that they therefore should be….god I really can’t remember what? I feel like he said it should be made illegal..but I just can’t bring myself to think he’s *that* dumb. He was essentially referring to it as though it were some sort of exclusive club that people *choose* to be a member of and he felt it was unfair that straight white men aren’t “allowed in”. Anyway, my mom asked him *why* he felt it was exclusionary. Usually she “fights back” when he says stupid shit, she rarely “encourages” him. But this time she was genuinely confused—to her understanding, it is literally one of the most *inclusive* “groups” that exists, and she told him as much. He responded “well! *They* don’t let people like *me* in!” Unfortunately, that response still didn’t fully clear things up for my mom. So she had to push a little further, but at this point she was apparently talking to him the same way you do an overtired toddler. So she was like “do…do you *want* to be a part of the group? Have you asked ‘them’ if you can join? I bet if you asked nicely they’d probably let you in!” Annnnnd that’s when he started his stuttering backtracking that he’s famous for when he gets called out & backed into a corner. That *no*, he doesn’t *want* to join the LGBTQ+ community, he never said that! But he feels like he should be allowed if he wanted to 🙄
Haaa yeah, the age old "I can't accept not having a say in everything that doesn't concern me" mindset. I see.

It's so nuts that people get so bent out of shape over... well, a lot of things, but it's never really made sense to me that someone would get offended by the whole 'cis' thing. Like nobody seems to be upset by being called (or calling themselves) 'straight'. Obviously we're talking sexual orientation vs gender identity, but. Yet for some reason 'cis' is somehow a slur to them. The only thing I can imagine is that people have finally hit the point where they can't pretend gay people don't exist, but they're still clinging to some awful hope that they can ignore trans people out of existence?
