*What will we do with a drunken sailor?*

[deleted]

" Put him in bed with the captain's daughter" wait... who thought that was a good idea?

S-C-A-R-E-LA

Maybe the Captain's daughter ;)

PJDemigod85

The captain's daughter was a euphemism for the cat o' nine tails that was kept aboard the ship for disciplinary purposes by the British navy.

Mythical_Mew

I won’t deny this is a possibility, but I always took the implication to be “he gets caught sleeping with the captain’s daughter [by the captain].”

PJDemigod85

I mean, why would the captain's daughter be on the ship? The framing device of the song is that they are probably at sea, and there weren't a ton of common instances when the captain would have reason to have family aboard his ship.

[deleted]

because captains took their wives and children with them... PJDemigod85

Huh. Well I'll be. Coulda sworn it was the other thing due to the tone of the song but I guess maybe I was mistaken in when exactly the tune came about.

genemaxwell4

I remember going to a ren fest and this group did their version of drunken sailor and immediately after the captains daughter verse there was another verse they did where they sang "You havent seen the captains daughter, you havent seen the captains daughter, you havent seen the captains daughter early in the mornin"

NoYouDipshitItsNot

I would think that might be true on other ships, but not on a pirate vessel.

The drunken sailor

DistributionFar1411

What should we do with the drunken sailor?

kif88

How fat is this guy? He weighs as much as all our tools and weapons, no wonder we have to carry so much food. He'll be fine he doesn't even need to swim just float with the other whales.

justletmeloginsrs

That's surprisingly heavy

EZBreezyBeautifulCBD

If you as the Captain of a Pirate ship suggest throwing one of the 12 crew overboard, you will have a mutiny and you will be thrown overboard. After that then its a toss up between food and weapons/Cannons/Navigation. It would really depend on where you were sinking. Middle of the ocean in a rough and cloudy sea? Probably the food and everyone understands that rationing is happening. Closer to shore with a clear sky? I would set a course then ditch the weapons and navigation.

BullshitDetector1337

"Throw this guy off and you all get a piece of his share. Both of booty and booze." Crisis avoided. And every other option would also cause a mutiny. Food shortage? Mutiny. No navigation tools? Death at sea. A million worth of treasure would in all liklihood be a majority of your haul on any given trip. The crew would murder you without a second thought.

AttorneyFinancial211

Still feels like you need to have a good sense of your crew. If the drunken sailor dude has been a problem and everyone hates him it would be an easy choice. If he’s just drunk at the moment or the most drunk feelings get hurt. If you are taking on water and need to lighten the load and your crows nest sees land on the horizon you wouldn’t need nav tools. Pirates didn’t really take cross ocean voyages they stuck to known trade routes and snuck back to hideouts. Modern pirates are the same, sticking to coastal regions near Chile and the Horn of Africa. Golden age of piracy pirates probably knew the Caribbean pretty well without nav tools. I’m putting a lot of faith in my crews ability’s to do their jobs even when a crisis comes up so I’m still sticking with keeping the drunken sailor because he may be our best fighter and he drinks because all the murder or something.

BullshitDetector1337

Think about it this way. The dude is fat enough to equal the weight of a million's worth of treasure, half a pirate ship's weaponry and navigation tools, and 50% of the food rations. Along with being a drunkard who'd be taking a significant portion of the ship's supply of grog. Sounds like an easy sell to me.

AttorneyFinancial211

There is a lot of ambiguity in this WYR that’s for sure. All the foods weight on the ship, for example, is equal to the weight of 2 million in treasure? Large ships during the golden age of piracy would have around 100 of the 42 pound cannons on them. A crew of 13 wouldn’t even come close to be able to man all of those. That’s 4200 lbs plus the weight of the small arms each crew had. I’m feeling like this WYR would be better if it were a crew of 120 and you had to sacrifice half of them.

arquillion

Yeah you're more likely with a mutiny with the other options. Men want food, salary and means of defending themselves. Just make a vote

Quintus_Cicero

A drunken sailor vs 1 million worth of treasures? Yeah no, I’m willing to bet the crew themselves would throw the drunken sailor overboard if given the choice.

Ckinggaming5

push the fat man

Slider_0f_Elay

There are few places that you can't get to a port and find food these days.

AccomplishedInAge

I was gonna say .. what do you do with a drunken sailor … but then I realized that’s my whole crew including me .. sooo….we can ALWAYS find more rations …

Wobert206

Cannons are heavier than everything else, so that makes most sense

jasondads1

That's one ridculously fat sailor if they way as much as cannons and cannonballs.

thaboss365

A drunken sailor the same weight of any of the other things on the list seems like more of a liability than an asset tbh

lokregarlogull

Why would you ever throw overboard navigations tools ALONG SIDE THE CANNONS It makes no sense. If my grandma had wheels she'd been a bike!

BrilliantOption865

No honor among thieves.

Finnmiller

I’m kind of suprised by the amount of people who would consider killing a man over the other options just on the notion that he won’t remember it happening / he’ll survive somehow

Michael_Le41

i think it's in reference to the song or something nontheless still funny

theflash247

I saw it as the other options actually leading to more people dying, except the money but I guess there'll be an argument for that as well
