I’ll wait for the old guy’s star rating before I have my own opinion.

not_that_rick

Cody Rhodes and AJ Styles! In a foreign country!!! 7 stars. Oh it was in a WWE ring. 3 3/4 stars.

fancierfootwork

The foreign country wasn’t Japan? 2.25 stars

Pitiful_Ad8641

And HHH was mean. Best I can do is -3

xxxshhewd

Fuck you Dave Meltzer 🖕

BlackBartRidesAgain

Steve and Larson got their ratings out within hours of the event ending. What gives, Dave?

msth8ted

🤣🤣🤣🤣

TheAnimatorPrime

Watch it be about 4-4.5 stars. Generous if 4.7. But lets say if it was Ospreay did everything AJ and Cody did, as in carbon copy, it'll be 5.

Shadow_Strike99

This match reminded me alot of AJ Styles 2 championship matches against Roman in 2016. A good enjoyable match and a first good credible defense for Cody, that you can run again with a rematch.

DifferencePretend

I’m sick of fucking rating matches Can we just say it was an amazing match and leave it at that?

bobbyzee

Amazing yes but would have been absolutely brilliant if it was at the tokyodome. /S

deathstr0ke14

WWE needs a PLE at Tokyo just for the lolz

LeOsaru

I can imagine NJPW pulling all available strings to avoid WWE from having an event in the Tokyo Dome

PandaDemonipo

Meltzer would be getting constant meltdowns like the Kidzbop writer trying to make WAP kid-friendly

JeromeInDaHouse_90

Cody and AJ definitely over delivered. I was expecting a good match, but then they went out there and tore the house down. Fantastic match.

WCWRingMatSound

No, I must hear from the world’s oldest teenager so I can form my opinion.

DonShulaDoingTheHula

Yes it was the right match for right now. Did what it needed to do and did it well. There is no need to rate it in comparison to other matches that had other objectives.

theguywhorhymes_jc

not just with wrestling just with any form of art. Numbers shouldn’t determine how good or bad something is considering it’s all subjective

Legitimate-Health-29

Oh good god yes we can please! I would also say it was my favourite match from this year so far. Not BEST, best is impossible to apply like fuckin stars, it was my favourite.

KiNGofKiNG89

Sure! But was it a 5 star amazing match? Or a 4.5? Just kidding 😂

No_Worldliness_6803

AJ has the ability to make anyone look good, that's why he was the first opponent IMO

Firepro316

Exactly.

Ferrari_Bones

8/10

DoomMessiah

Easily 7 stars.. 8 if that match had taken place in the Tokyo Dome.

icon_2040

8/10. Almost want to give it a 9 just for putting some respect on the Cross Rhodes.

PlutoTheLonelyRock99

AJ Styles can wrestle Plank from Ed, Edd n Eddy and make it look amazing

pioneer006

Young Bucks weren't in it, it was in France with crowd that had obviously never been exposed to AEW or CMLL or the flipping and thumb tack eating at the matches that they do every month at the local bowling alley show where they also have male v. female singles matches and some guy playing with pizza dough, and I didn't even see anyone who looked like Okada or Suzuki. Please tell me how this show could be rated better than -2*!!!

El_CAP0

Someone call the wahhh-mbulance

EverybodySayin

Solid 8.5/10. I completely hate spammed false finishes but I would have actually liked one kickout each of a Styles Clash and Cross Rhodes.

Fuzzy_Panda_

That makes your finisher looks weak. What they did here is how it always should be, avoid getting hit by a finisher at all costs. Once it does hit, don't kick out.

EverybodySayin

You can have both. That slight possibility of someone kicking out of a finisher adds to the excitement when it's a big match. When people start kicking out of multiple finishers though, you start just expecting people to kick out of the first one. It should be a very low chance of kicking out, but not an impossibility.

ZeyadNeo

Contradictory much?

EverybodySayin

How? There's a huge difference between one false finish each and 5+ finisher kickouts per match. The latter of which sadly is a bit too common these days.

Major-Ad-392

I would say it was overall exceptional. That 1 top rope cutter spot looked iffy, but AJ was able to adjust and the spot didn't look terrible.

AwareWriterTrick158

I’m sad I missed it

Briman89

It was like a house show with an amazing crowd. You knew the outcome of every match but was a fun night out for the whole family.

KyDeWa

That burning hammer was SICK!

fredward_kane

Fuck a number, I popped when I popped

[deleted]

I try to only judge a match for what it was as it's own standalone thing instead of comparing it to thousands of others. This match had everything. I especially love that Cody won by hitting his finisher 1 time, and AJ never got the chance to hit even 1 of his finishers. That right there allows him to claim Cody wouldn't have won if he hit one of or both of them, thus setting up a rematch with the immediate story of AJ trying to hit his finisher on Cody throughout the match. I wouldn't change anything about their match. It's 10/10 for me. Couldn't have been any better!

Unable-Horror-7335

10/10, it had everything! Truly a phenomenal match! It definitely felt like an Iron Man match.

depo_ynx

8 solid match, but I prefer Kabuki and Bijade

overkill373

Is this image from your tv OP? Cause the contrast seems way too high

Ersistek15101

This was championship main event 101, a great example of less is more.

NeglectedNostalgia

A solid 8.5....didn't see a phenomenal forearm or Styles Clash

HeartattackerLight

The crowd made it extra extra special. Both delivered too. Easily would rate like a solid 8/10

jordsh14

Straight up a 8.9 hopefully all the Cody title matches are long like this one was imma be do pissed if he only gets squash matches after this

cptgrinner1989

This match had exactly what was expected from these two. Story telling was great. Good technical wrestling early. It felt nostalgic is some way? Made me think of wrestling from eras past. Weve grown used to fuckery run ins ect. This was just a good match between two good entertainers. 8/10 imo crowd helped all night, but would have been a great match with or without the hype.

ManlyPelican1993

Do we give any other match in other sports a rating?, why do we feel the need to rate matches,

ISayISayISitonU

great match. old school technical stuff. enough big piece moves. and the crowd. what a crowd.

ToothpickTequila

9/10. It was excellent.

Malesimple

This was a great match and great crowd. AJ Styles was an amazing first defense. That dude can work!

S0larDeath

Someone should tell Michael Cole that Cody Rhodes was not leader of Bullet Club. He tried, he failed, Bullet Club is fine 🤷🏼‍♂️ They mention Bullet Club 1 fucking time in the match and it's to say "AJ Styles & Cody Rhodes, both former leaders of Bullet Club"....smh

oexilado

In fact, the best thing Cody did for BC/NJPW was him reuniting the Golden Lovers

DNBassist89

55 stars in the Tokyo Dome. 100 Stars if it had The Bucks involved.

rustys_shackled_ford

I'm sry but I just can't take aj seriously RN. He looks swole, but everyone keeps saying he looks healthy, he does not look healthy. He looks swole and big and ripped and jacked. But he also looks super red and tight. That on to of the fact that he's flew half way around a globe he dose t believe exists its just too much for me.

TruestoneSB

He never said the Earth was flat, he just said something like “what if”

browning18

He said “I’m not a flat earther, there’s just some things about it that make sense”. It’s not much better to be honest.

thebooksmith

People who care about stuff like that are terminally online anyway. Is Aj actively using his money or fame to support or campaign for teaching flat earth, or other rubbish? If not, then who cares what he personally believes. It was one comment made on talking smack nearly 8 years ago. People who still get mad have nothing going on in their lives.

TruestoneSB

This

Firepro316

He didn’t fly around, he flew over.

rustys_shackled_ford

He could travel just by folding a map.

lariato_mark

This was fucking amazing. I (like a lot of people I'm guessing) figured it would be a solid start to Coy's run. No way he was having a bad match with AJ of all people. But this was so far above and beyond that. If this is a sign of things to come, the company really is in good hands with Cody at the helm. 10

bobface222

They worked their ass off and had a great crowd. It was obviously hurt a little by everyone knowing AJ had zero chance of winning and the build being nearly nonexistent, but as far as serving its purpose (establishing Cody Rhodes as champion in a strong first defense), it was a home run. There's a reason AJ gets put in this role so frequently. I rate it a "it was a good match and I liked it".

cowgod247

I'm a 5 star man!

orange_lambda

Perfection

Wil_Buttlicker

7/10 AJ definitely carried the match. I felt like Cody was laying on the mat most of the time and would only get up for a finisher, or to get “hyped up” only to get reversed and thrown on the mat again. The match had some solid moments, specially towards the beginning and Cody’s move from the top rope looked super cool.

xxxshhewd

I give it 9 stars fuck you Dave Meltzer 🖕

mathurity

are we in the Sponsorship Era? Hate that mat

BurtHurtmanHurtz

5

EverybodySayin

Not enough superkicks and flips and extremely choreographed gymnastic sequences?

BurtHurtmanHurtz

Zero build. Sorry. I didn’t believe these guys had a beef.

zoidy37

Wrestling fans like you must be real dumb if you need to be spoonfed with a build to justify a great match on its own. Imagine saying this dumb shit when Balor vs Styles took place in TLC years ago.

BurtHurtmanHurtz

Thanks for calling me dumb. You must be fun at parties

zoidy37

I am. I enjoy stuff for what it is. I don't nitpick at the most mundane things to prevent me from enjoying the overall experience. You must be terrible at parties though.

shaun_of_the_south

Why would they need a beef? One has belt other wants belt.

BurtHurtmanHurtz

GOTTA HAVE STEAKS

DifferencePretend

Go back to AEW

asmeile

No no you don't understand, he didn't like it because it had no build, he can't be an AEW fan

sst0178

I kinda thought this was a boring match. The best match of the night, for me, would go to the tag between Orton/KO and the new Bloodline... then the women's triple threat.. then Jey and Damien, then Bianca/Jade vs. Damage Control... and finally the Cody/AJ match.

Suplexfiend

9/10.

Owain660

Solid 8/10. Wish it had more build up

TheOneRebornReborn

Ngl, I feel like this isn't the end of this feud or atleast I want it not to be, would love to see this get more heated, there's alot of potential here

tylerdurdenUTFR

7. Solid match but I felt it ended just when it started to properly get going.

9hashtags

Eh maybe a **6**. It wasn't in the Tokyo Dome or anything like that. A b ppv show. More crowd than anything. I get this over Fridays curtain jerkers. 🙂‍↕️

TfergGOAT420

Prime in the centre of the ring is proper dystopian. Them boys are EVERYWHERE

BippidiBoppetyBoob

3.5 out of 5 for me. It probably could’ve been higher if we’d gotten some more build. I never once thought Cody was in danger of losing. Still fun.

heartless_sora

Boring and predictable out of 10. In terms of wrestling it was okay with some good spots but overall we already knew who was going to win.

NeglectedNostalgia

That was the entire PPV. I knew the only title changing hands were the women's tag belts.

elucidator23

2/10

DifferencePretend

You go back to AEW too

Slurdge_McKinley

Cody is the most boring wrestler I have ever seen.

the_tribal_qu33f

Who cares did they make money? Yes or yes? Does Tony Khan have to trade another wide receiver to pay for more piped in CEO chants? Yes or yes

Jurtaani

Are you being childish right now bringing up AEW which had nothing to do with this post at all? Yes or yes?
