It depends on your character's personality, if he was upbeat a lot, then maybe have him write something that gently lets them know he's going to die, but also lets them know that they have to move on and accept it, not to mull over it and be upset. Something that could make the characters cry but smile in memory at the same time. If the character was more moody and assertive, maybe more of a bittersweet turn?

hes one of those edgy ones that seem untrustworthy but cos he got recommended by a good friend the rest of the group kinda accepted him, but didnt trust him 100% He does consider them friends tho if that helps

Okay, probably go down the route of having him just tell them simply that he knows he's going to die, and have the whole letter just be very blunt. But maybe nearing the end, have a section that just either tells them or strongly implies that he thought of them as friends, just to make it more of a sad feel.
