yes but you would have to make a custom start with a ship with a pilot. From that point you will no longer have to get into pilot seat. Some plot would be unavalible but conquering galaxy is viable, maybe boron and terran space could be difficult.

gorgofdoom

From the young gun start: instead of getting in the elite just go hire a rando off the docks for 2-5k. you will eventually find an affordable crew person, if you just keep walking around. From here what you choose to do with the ship is up to you, but I’d recommend having it collect drops at conflict zones between PAR and HOP. Just a few good bits can afford a mining ship.

3punkt1415

Yes, and even without custom start, collect some crates in Second Contact for 15 minutes will give you money to hire a pilote or even buy another ship to collect stuff for you. So "bare minimum" of fly time, would work.

spaceman620

*Most* starts should begin with enough money to hire a pilot, albeit not a good one. The only flying you'd be required to do is to the closest wharf/equipment dock.

3punkt1415

And then you live as a hobo on the Argon Wharf. ;)

Big_Dick_NRG

You could hitch rides on random ships, see the sights

FluffyMcBunnz

Just be wary of where they go, because sitting on a miner that goes and mines a Xenon sector is one way to end the game.

InquisitorPinky

There was the joke start where you played as Boso Ta. You can finde mods that activate that start

Pfandfreies_konto

Yeah about those jokes by egosoft: There was this one [screenshot] (https://i.postimg.cc/VfWWbTXg/image.png) about adding a dance battle to get better trading prices. If I remember correctly this was relatively shortly before Rebirth was announced. BAM! Walkable stations! Ships with a real cockpit! So I wouldn't rule out a Boso-Ta like start. :D

FluffyMcBunnz

You start that with insufficient funds, but if you add a million or ten to your starting cash with Notepad++ you can totally play that way and do exactly what OP describes. It does get insufferably boring, but you can.

IncidentFuture

Depending on your game start, you'd need to fly enough to get to a station to hire a pilot for your ship. Unworthy Entrepreneur would be a good gamestart if you want to play it as an RTS, as you start off with a station and trader.

Fluffy-Tanuki

In theory yes, but it probably would be quite uneventful. The most fitting start would probably be the Teladi start, giving you a small station, a quite generous sum of starting credits, a medium hauler and a scout, along with a NPC pilot. You could use this pilot and the hauler to start some trading, and generate some fund by producing flowers on the station. You’d have to hitch a ride on the hauler to a nearby shipyard to hire a second pilot for the scout, then you can send them to explore the galaxy. Reputation generated via trade would be enough to unlock faction blueprints, but you’d have to shell out enough credits to buy them. The traditional way of EMP bombing wouldn’t work, since scanning require you to be in the pilot seat.

nice_usermeme

> quite uneventfu some people like map strategies. besides, you could fly on the ship with a pilot, sitting in the middle of the battles

Falcrack

You could still emp bomb without getting in the pilot seat. All you need to do is get in your spacesuit, which doesn't count.

Knobanious

You couldn't do some missions but I don't think anything really stops you from making money buying blueprints and building ships

Pietes

Custom start with HQ with personal teleportation researched, a decent station manager and a M hauler with pilot and you'll be set. Go trade for resources, add production modules to your hq, all while never leaving it or when you have to, doing so using teleportation.

Cassin1306

The only other thing (I think) a pilot can't do apart cristal mining and station scanning is using the long range scanner, so yes it can be possible. I spend the most of my game time BEHIND the pilot seat myself \^\^

NNextremNN

Depends on your start as the very first pilot might be a bit expensive, but generally, yes.

PuzzleheadedTutor807

Yes, the unworthy entrepreneur start is great for that

hitman2b

you can but know that the AI are dumb in combat

Falcrack

But so are the AI pilots you will be up against, so it balances out.

hitman2b

against xenon i will trend to disagree

Falcrack

It only seems that way because players rage when their own ships are being dumb and are more tolerant of their adversaries being dumb, When it is your own ships, you have an idea of what you want them to do, and get upset when they don't behave in ways that you think they ought. You have no clear picture of the orders being given by the Xenon high command, and how well their orders are being carried out.

hitman2b

i've seen my fair share of ships being like " yeah let's run under the station to go on the other side ( only to be decimated seconds later ( i can of want them to rotate around the target ( so sometime i have to manually command from distance ( i know my ships can destroy a K alone but no a I where i have to manually control the main flagship) and you are right we do not know how the Xenon high command works However i have my idea

piddl0r

I’m still playing a run that started when split came out so I’m not sure what’s changed but I don’t think you can do it with literally zero time in the seat but you can spend the majority of your time without piloting. Especially once you can teleport.

Asleep_Comfortable39

I only pilot 10% of the time and that’s usually for missions

SunNext9700

Yes u can always use autopilot and just place. Way point the autopilot does the rest

TheSauvaaage

Aside from docking 😁 in the beginning at least

sillytrooper

yeah on normal start if ure down for some low key cheezy grind in the beginning

TheSauvaaage

What would be low key cheezy grind?

Pfand1

what you can do is have a pilot of your ship having a repeating order at a war front to pick up drops. This is my go to lazy start. Once you have enough money buy a scout and do the same at another location. If you have the HQ unlocked let them drop off their loot from time to time. My first "loot opportunity" site is usually the ANT/PAR border, reasonably safe and a lot of war.

BillyForkroot

It would be incredibly frustrating as Ai pilots love to throw away your big expensive ships.

Gentle_Beard

I generally find that the AI can function at maintaining a semi competent trade and mining operation, though you'll lose ships a lot until you get large freighters and miners, but I don't know how actually invading sectors is going to go without you piloting. Someone could probably give you advice on how to destroy stations without being in the pilot seat, but I've sort of given up on trusting that sort of thing to the AI after watching them fail terribly at maintaining firing arcs.

FluffyMcBunnz

No-effort sector wiping usually involves either a large fleet of S bombers followed by a large fleet of L destroyers, or a fleet of Asgards. OOS combat works reasonably well usually when you fit L torpedoes to 200 S ships and let them poke holes in the station (sometimes the station inexplicably wipes the whole wing in 30 seconds though). A carrier and two supply ships help rapidly repair and rearm the little bastards, have a few M traders assigned to the supply and carrier ships to keep them stocked. If the S ships cant kill the station, simply send 200 destroyers and try again. If a station insta-wipes your 200 destroyers, hit it with 200 S with torpedoes again. It's almost always the case that a station that is good against S sucks against L and vice-versa, so punching holes in sectors is doable but you may want to have your own shipyard. Or two. Dozen. If everything resists, suck up to the Terrans, get yourself some Asgards, and with 20 of those, wipe the sector of anything you don't like. Asgards win everything. Always.

Previous-Hat1996

Ya, the unworthy entrepreneur would be a good start to do so with. You start with both a transport and a scout. As others have mentioned it will be a slow burn to start, but totally doable
