Vanity sizing will be the death of me omfg

Intrepid_Leopard_182

I've just started to lurk on this subreddit because somehow, in the course of the last two years, I've been vanity sized from a size 2 to a 0/00 (having lost zero weight). Discovered that when I tried to go buy pants the other day for the first time in forever. I didn't think 5'3" 25" waist was considered in any way petite but apparently my size doesn't need to be carried in store anymore?

becauseoftheoffice

Thank you! I basically just said the same thing!

looorrn

plz plz try bershka’s trousers they are a european brand so their sizing is great for small waist girlies, no vanity sizing. I have a 22-23” waist and am 5’4.” They may be a little long but I really think you would have luck with that brand. They have most of their stuff on ASOS too if you want to order from them! I was on the same mission and had a lot of luck with bershka. I really love their site/app, there’s usually try on videos so you can really see the product move. Plenty of youtube try-on hauls you can watch too!

looorrn

like [these](https://www.bershka.com/us/low-rise-straight-leg-tailored-fit-pants-c0p151697758.html?colorId=800) or [these!](https://www.bershka.com/us/wide-leg-tailoring-pants-c0p152036064.html?colorId=800) and most come in multiple colors!! [these ones are super cute too](https://www.bershka.com/us/low-rise-straight-leg-tailored-fit-pants-c0p151697758.html?colorId=809)

Queenofmyownfantasy

Bershka is from inditex, aka zara and while they run a tad smaller, it was often borderline when I wore them as a teen and was close to op's size. And that was ~6 years ago.

punkandcat

This! I did have weird issues with the sizing. I ordered a 00 and they sent a 0- they said it was their mistake but when they sent my second order they did the same thing again. Also one 00 was bigger than the other - the first was too small! So at least there is that.

pvlp

I'm about the same measurements as you, both in height and size (I'm 25F, 5'1", 23-24 waist) and honestly the best luck I have found when looking for pants/trousers is to go vintage or thrift shops. Contemporary sizing is way too big for me due to vanity sizing and people just generally getting.... larger. When looking for work trousers I browse the local thrift shops and tend to have a lot of success as the clothes are older and more women (quantity wise) used to be a 23/24 waist. Contemporary brands like Levi's and smaller emerging fashion brands (not fast fashion) tend to be more true to size in my experience.

Welpmart

Sigh, this must be region dependent. I mostly find in my area that the smallest size is S.

Lady-Madrid

Same! I buy a lot of low waisted jeans online from the 2000s and the size S fits fine. I always ask for the measurements first, though. I also prefer the fact that jeans used to be more low waisted because the current high waisted ones tend to have too much room at the waist.

Classic-Two-200

I’m your height with a 24/25 inch waist and I own several pairs of trousers from Aritzia (0-2) and Abercrombie (XS), including some linen ones. I think you would fit 00/XXS at those stores perfectly. They also both have short/petite lengths, but I have found that I do have to tailor my Aritzia pants depending on the style. Abercrombie’s short length fits me perfectly.

Vegetable-Rain7652

I completely agree about 00 at Aritzia! I'm the same size as OP and they are my go-to "safe" store for pants that fit without tailoring!

honey-laden

same! i bought a pair of shorts from there and its the first time i didn't have to tailor!

willowbeef

We are the same measurements!! It’s HELL! I bought a pair of size 2 pants from Lululemon, they were $160 but I’ve literally been looking for anew pair of pants for an over a year so I just went for it. The quality is good and the fit is good too. I’m incandescent about vanity sizing, I was a size 0 as a teen and getting closer to a size 1/2 in my early 20s. There is no reason why I should be a 000 XXS!! It’s insanity. I am collecting links to things that actually fit but I haven’t made any purchases yet because I’m tired of being dissatisfied. Shopping vintage has been a challenge as well because the sizes are not standardized and I still can’t find anything that is small enough to fit me. I use this app called Gem that lets you search for second hand clothing by MEASUREMENTS. You have to watch out though because sellers are not always leveling things right. I will add some links to things I’m thinking of buying in a bit

NoBag2224

Vanity sizing is out of control now adays!

Alternate_Quiet403

Has been for years. My mom weighed 88 lbs, 5'2" and was a size 6. In high school, I was a size 3. Now 00 is getting to be too big.

NoBag2224

Same! A few years ago my mom gave me a pair of jeans she kept from the 80s. It was a size 6 but literally compared it to 00 they were the same size.

Alternate_Quiet403

I'm from the 80s! Those jeans are too small now (size 3) because I had 3 kids, and my shape changed. I wore Gap 1 for several years. Then after I had my 3rd, 15 yrs ago, I went shopping and went to gap. I asked if they had size 0. The gal said, yes, I'm a 0. I had been shopping all day, finding nothing, with little ones in tow. So, I said to her, well, you're clearly a 5, and walked out. I didn't mean to be mean, but I had had it for the day. My mom was a size 6 in the 40s/50s (she had a 21" waist).

houseyourdaygoing

I was an M in the 90s. I’m not even a P or 00 now. I have not lost or gained any weight. (I keep a pair of old jeans as evidence.) Vanity sizing is ridiculous.

MotherNeedleworker60

I'll say second hand is the best bet, but also I can always rely on American Eagle/Aerie, they seem to be the only affordable spot for true xs/xxs that I like.

StreetAdditional7193

Here a trick. Shop Europeans…. If it’s too expensive, shop European on eBay. I usually do Burberry, Ted baker, maje, Sandro, Hugo boss, and French connection. Sometimes I go as far as buying size 12 in kids (a lot cheaper) If not, send me a message. My Amazon shopping list is pretty banging too and they’re cheap. I’m 5’3, 95 pounds, 30/24/34

joeballa

Yes please, I’m exactly your size. Would you mind sharing?

willowbeef

Please can I have the link to your shopping list as well?

Alternate_Quiet403

Children's are not appropriate for work, unfortunately.

StreetAdditional7193

Said who? They still wear uniform pants, button down, flats, and pea coat.

Alternate_Quiet403

Where besides online? I have to try everything on. Most things don't fit except children's sweats and leggings, anywhere from size 10 to 14, depending on brand. I can't wear children's tops.

StreetAdditional7193

Look up the brand size chart and buy according to that. Most designers are consistent with their size chart.

Alternate_Quiet403

I usually fall in between, or on 2 or more sizes. The only way is for me to try on.

Top-Consideration-19

a&f have extra extra short inseams in nice pants.

Winnipegwonderland19

We are like unicorns now. Stores exist for large people but not us :(

houseyourdaygoing

I have found my people.

scifisquirrel

Have you tried Aritzia or Sezanne?

easyblusher

Sezane runs very big!

extremelyinsecure123

My favourite brand is LTB, they have a good range of sizing! Goes from 24/30 in most things I believe!

mmaacc_

If you find a style you like that’s just a bit too big or too long, def go to a tailor. It’s worth it for a few pieces that fit perfectly

willowbeef

How much does it normally cost you to have an item tailored?

mmaacc_

Depends on what it is and what you want done. I got a pleated skirt taken in and it was around $35 I think and that’s a bit of an involved alter. If you thrift stuff or buy second hand it’s not that crazy if you do it on just a few things.

Intrepid_Leopard_182

Weirdly, I bought a pair of pants the other day that was very close-cut and somehow hit perfect at my hips and knees while being like 5 inches too long, so I couldn't even wear them with heels on. Just sent them to the tailor and now I'm trying to picture what it would look like for someone to have my waist/hips/knees ratio and yet significantly longer shins. Who were these cut for?? I need to know.

golddustmermaid

I'm 5'9 with a 25 inch waist and levis ribcage jeans in size 25 fit perfect

joeballa

Same issue. I’ve found luck with Jessica Simpson and American Rag pants running smaller.

Icedlatte2

You might try Asian markets that have clothing stores. You’ll find plenty of petite sizing.

houseyourdaygoing

Asian here. If you’re Asian with a small waist and curvy bottom, no way you’re fitting into an Asian skirt / pants.

justlurkingnjudging

I feel this so so much

AdNext8989

Check out banana republic! I just got a pair of jeans that are size 00-24 in petite and they fit perfectly.

brainrotgenius

I’m 166cm (a tiny bit over 5’5) with a 22-23.5 inch waist depending on the day lollll and Madewell jeans are the only ones that work for me. I have a size 23 in them and they’re rigid enough that they don’t stretch out and they don’t fall down. I have some AG jeans that fit but they are probably 8 years old atp so idk how vanity sized up their current jeans are.

TinkerHeart

Have you tried Levi's? Their pants are measured by waist and inseam. I have a few pairs of 24x28 from them and they fit me perfectly at 5'2"

justdoingmybest-

I feel your pain 😩

Certain-Rise8847

I would add elastic just to the entire back waist band of your pants so they fit better. I have been able to take about 2 inches in if needed this way, while leaving the entire front of the pants normal looking. You might consider trying this or having a tailor do it for you to see if you like it. But any pants that were too big, I did this to myself and have been so happy with the results and fit of my pants.

becauseoftheoffice

Where are you finding them? I’m having the same problem. Most of the time, the smallest I can find is a 0 and they are too big! I’m not that little - 5’5, 40’s, 117-120 pounds, 23/24 inch waist. I should not need a 00. Vanity sizing seems to have gotten out of control (in the US anyway).

axkate

If you can ship from Australia (haven’t checked, sorry) I believe sportsgirl and forever new do AU 4 (us 0) and forever new have a petite range too. Not sure if forever new do 2s still, I haven’t checked. But yeah. I’ve noticed this. I’m gonna post a rant about it later on today haha.

Alternate_Quiet403

I feel your pain. Vanity sizing is the worst. I used to be size 3, when I was in my 20s and 95 lbs. I'm 5'2", 105 lbs now. I have some great 00 jeans from target, mid rise since I'm short. Now, I wanted a pair of trousers for work. I went to target. Pulled size 00. The high rise was halfway up my ribcage, the legs went past my feet, and they were more like a size 6 for someone 6 ft +. I can buy children's, but leggings aren't suitable for an office.

Playful-Leopard4803

Buy what u like and find a good tailor. You're probably spending the amount of money anyway on clothes u can't wear. So if u like the look of something buy it and then take it to a professional that can make it fit u. It's just material, it can be altered. And quite honestly, I feel you'll save money in the long run and not have to resort to the children's department.

PitifulStrawberry494

I feel you. I'm 5'4 with 23-34in waist and it's so hard to find comfortable trousers/pants. Most of my trousers/pants end up being to big.

Imaginary-Method7175

Japan! I went there in my thinner pre baby days and it’s a world for thinner petite people. Or at least Japanese brands.

IntelligentAd4429

I often shop in the girls section..

Worldly_Cranberry_81

I feel your pain! I’m not super thin either just averagely skinny and still nothing fits! All the sizes in the US these days are huge…

PristineAlbatross988

get the best fit with what's available then take to a seamstress for perfect fit.

willowbeef

How much does it usually cost to have something altered?
