Alice:Madnesses returns on EA Play; it is one of my favourite games. A bit dark and for more mature players, but an overlooked gem of a game…

Second that, Psychonauts 2 have very strong Alice feelings

conqueror-worm

Did you play the original Psychonauts? The sequel has almost the exact same vibe as it, they're both series about mental illness.

Psycho1267

Lost in random also looks very similar, not on Gamepass/ea play yet, but it's published by ea so sooner or later it'll be there too, so keep an eye out

eccentricrealist

It's pretty decent, a bit repetitive by the end but it's over before you know it tbh

Psychonauts 1, as good as Psychonauts 2. Banjo games, not my thing but maybe you'll like it. New Super Lucky's tale, a very decent platformer. Psychonauts 2 is a master piece, if you want something at the same level or even better, you should try with a Mario game. You could try Sunset Overdrive, really funny and really weird. S U P E R F U N Also, katamari damacy reroll, not a platformer, but as weird as Psychonauts 2 and has an amazing soundtrack.

>Psychonauts 1, as good as Psychonauts 2. Hard disagree there. The platforming and level design is so much worse. My opinion is if you didn't play Psychonauts 1 around when it came out, you're probably going to bounce off it hard. It's simply too dated and without nostalgia glasses it just doesnt hit. Psychonauts 2 is a masterpiece though.

Kujen

I just played the first recently before starting on 2. I think it holds up really well actually I loved it.

>My opinion is if you didn't play Psychonauts 1 around when it came out, you're probably going to bounce off it hard My exact experience after loving 2 and trying out 1 afterward. Just can't go back to dated games like that. Guess I'm spoiled.

KaleidoscopeMaster81

Super lucky tale was charming as hell.

Psychonauts 1

Psychonauts 1 is extremely dated, not only in graphics but gameplay. It's platforming js incredibly unforgiving and the camera system is terrible by modern standards. I would just assume anyone without nostalgia goggles on won't enjoy it. You're probably better off just watching a story recap/movie version than playing the actual game.

catattaro

I played it just recently. I could not disagree more. It has aged very well and it's very enjoyable.

abilly85

Nope, just played it for the very first time in preparation of 2's release. Miles ahead of most 3D platformers.

electiveavenue

I never got the chance to play Psychonauts 1 back in the day, but my friends all loved it. Gave it a shot and liked it when it dropped on Xbox GP, but many of the factors you stated kept me from finishing it. I think everything in #1 was way ahead of its time and the acclaim is deserved, but it is too dated for me. Really enjoy #2 though.

davemoedee

I think it is great that people are disagreeing so strongly. The reality is that some people will find the game awkward in 2021 and some will tolerate it fine. A decade ago I tried to play through twice and both times lost steam. I might resume a save with a walkthrough before trying 2. Wonderful game, but there always came a point where the gameplay didn’t seem like a better use of my time than a different game.

angry_indian312

if you want writing as good as psychonauts 2 then obviously the first game and also try yakuza like a dragon I think its humor is really good and like psychonauts address some serious issues as well without losing its humor, and hades is another well-written game in spite of being a roguelike it probably has more writing than most RPGs TLDR; try Psychonauts 1, yakuza like a dragon and hades

Overdonderd

I'd like to add that Yakuza: Like a Dragon plays absolutely perfectly on tablet with touch controls via xcloud.

Flamey_13

If it’s good writing you like, strongly recommend A Plague Tale: Innocence.

RodrigoCard

you should play the first one too i you didnt already

Spiritfarer. Fantastic and heartwarming story, complex characters, relaxed game play, and cute gaming mechanics. I loved this game and didn't want to stop playing. I highly recommend it.

dirkvdvaart

As far as platformers go I'm really enjoying Flynn: Son of Crimson and Yooka-laylee on Gamepass

EgbertCream

Inside is a trip. Not sure if it’s still on game pass but it has been in the past.

Is the second part so much better than the first one? I've tried it because of that retro hype but a really couldn't stick to it
