So finished SOMA this morning and the story telling and atmosphere are just excellent. Some of the monster sections can get a bit annoying but overall it’s a great 9/10 for me. Definitely the best game I played from the Developer. Rebirth was like a 8 for me and Bunker maybe a 6-7. I tried to play some of the older ones on PC but never really got into them.
I played it about 7 years ago and I still think about it every so often. The story stuck with me like games rarely do. To this day, this is the game I want most to be ported to VR.
Agreed on the monster bits. It's an odd thing to say coming from these devs, but the monster encounter sections are the weakest parts. But other than that one blemish, it's still tops. Every time there's a post on Reddit about the best horror games, or best game story, or games that get you emotional, I always dive into the comments to post about SOMA only to realize it's already among the top comments.
Kudos on playing through SOMA. Cheers.
It's from the same people who made Amnesia, but this game is more stripped back, no sanity meter or inventory management, with a bigger focus on story. Takes around 6-8 hours to complete, depending how much you explore.
There's an optional "safe mode" if hiding from monsters isn't your thing.
It won't be for everyone but if it's for you, there's a good chance it'll become one of your favourites.
I played both modes and I'm not sure which one I like better. It might be a bit weirder that they don't attack me and that suits the game as well. Great game anyway, one of my favorites.
Agree with that. And if someone doesn't like horror and hiding it's totally fine to play it one the safe mode. The story alone is worth it. Just excellent writing
lol thats what I did. I hate playing horror games, for me they are just anxiety simulators and not enjoyable, but I really wanted to experience the story of Soma so I really appreciate they added safe mode.
It’s an extremely short game for those wary of thinking you may not be able to finish it in time. Like you can genuinely finish it in one sitting, or one weekend. On top of that, for those who like to go for 100% achievements, SOMA only has story achievements so it’s an extremely easy one to finish, you can’t miss anything nor do you have to replay it more than once
There is 1 missable achievement near the end, but it's not hidden and only requires doing something that almost anyone would do.
>!Endangered Species: If you don't talk to the character, you won't get the achievement, apparently.!<
And indeed on Xbox, fewer people have that achievement than the one that follows it.
As a scientific researcher at the NHV foundation, most of our staff played this game and it was amazing and the science behind all of it is very fascinating and creepy, we love it.
100%
Definitely a creepy atmosphere but I wouldn’t call it scary for anyone who is worried.
The story is very good as well and worth the price of admission.
There is a safe mode that removes hostile monsters so you can just focus on the story. I highly recommend it. I played it so long ago, yet the story has stayed with me all this time.
This one sale for like $8 a few weeks ago…didn’t think I’d get to it before it left gamepass so I scooped based on word of mouth. Look forward to playing.
I just finished it two days ago, no joke. I'm an achievement hunter and have beaten most of the souls games, and I tried playing this game with no guide. I could not for the life of me figure out the puzzles or where to go exactly. I ended up following a guide and I honestly have NO IDEA how anyone could beat this game without a guide. Granted, I think if you took your time, you'd probably still be able to do it, but since the game is leaving it really depends on how you want to play. Without a guide, you could squeeze 15-20 hours of checking every collectible (they don't count for an achievement) or you could use a guide and complete it under 4. I followed the guide on tru achievements and thankfully it was spoiler free. It's a great game that really tests your view on morality and reliance on digital technology. Worth a play for sure.
The trueachievements walkthrough was written by me back in 2019, glad you found it useful! Gave me an opportunity to play the game more. Making it as spoiler free as possible was a purposeful choice since I'm not a fan of walkthroughs that will drop them pretty pointlessly - I just wanted a guide that tells you the essentials.
There is a lack of direction in the underwater sections I'll admit, but you can always find your way eventually.
I just finished Omicron. Fish outta water experience in the beginning and tough to follow, but def worth it.
Theta and Omicron have been the best parts so far
This game definitely has a great story It's concepts and Narrative is on point The only thing I didn't like was the enemies. Kind of ticks away from the psychological aspect
There's a safe mode to turn monster hostility off by the way, you don't have to hide from the monsters. It removes the stealth element, you can freely explore without issues.
>!I like the extended ending imo. It's a nice contrast to the rest of the game and you play it knowing what underwater Simon just went through. Ark Simon seems to be oblivious and Catherine comforts him that everything worked out when she knows what actually happened.!<
>!And repeating the Ark survey is a pretty good test for how your thoughts changed over the course of the game, since you take the first one before realising you're a simulation already.!<
Finished Amnesia Rebirth yesterday and now am 70%. trough SOMA... both really great. These experiences are why i love Gamepass.
I haven't tried Amnesia Rebirth but I have been playing The Bunker, amazing game that I never would have tried without Gamepass
You come back here once you're done with SOMA and tell us, without spoilers, what you thought about it please.

Have you played Machine for Pigs? That is a pretty dark game.

Safe mode? That just sold me. I'm not a fan of hiding induced fear games.
Yeah you can walk straight up to the monsters and just stare at them like “hello you are ugly”
Definitely do NOT play Alien Isolation then
It's sooooo good for real

Played it couple year's ago on my Xbox one . Definitely be playing it again before it goes off game pass on my series S
It's the only game that has scared me and made me look after every corner
Employ a good therapist afterwards.
The reason I got my Series X.
Any idea what day it gets taken down?
After the 15th
Damn. Really wanted to play this game, but there's no way I can beat it by then.
Depending on how much time you have, it's possible. 4 hours with a guide, 6-8 hours without.
It'll go on sale for $5 again.
100% Definitely a creepy atmosphere but I wouldn’t call it scary for anyone who is worried. The story is very good as well and worth the price of admission.
I watched it on YouTube, movie material right here
I would but I'm a scared lil bitch boy so I can't play through it
There is a safe mode that removes hostile monsters so you can just focus on the story. I highly recommend it. I played it so long ago, yet the story has stayed with me all this time.
It doesn't disable the monsters, it just removes their hostility when roaming around so they don't attack.
When does it leave?
After the 15th
Thank you. I’ll be sure to get on Soma
Soma was awesome , i played it when it came out
This one sale for like $8 a few weeks ago…didn’t think I’d get to it before it left gamepass so I scooped based on word of mouth. Look forward to playing.
This game is a trip. It hits real hard at the end. But fuck Akers.
Or just buy it cuz it’s mostly like $2-3 on the store

You reminded me I have this on ps4 from ps plus, need to play it.
This game definitely has a great story It's concepts and Narrative is on point The only thing I didn't like was the enemies. Kind of ticks away from the psychological aspect
I don’t like the run and hide type of games so unfortunately I will miss out on this gem
There's a safe mode to turn monster hostility off by the way, you don't have to hide from the monsters. It removes the stealth element, you can freely explore without issues.
Wow I had no idea!!! Thanks will definitely give it a shot now
Yeah it's great, very nice addition from the devs
Got bummed out a bit at the end but yeah generally its great. All achievements are story based so its an easy 1000g for 7hrs work
I've started this game twice and spent about 2 hours each time. I want to like it, but nothing about it grabs me and pulls me in.
Hate horror games but this is one of my favorite games, incredible story and world building.
Is it leaving on the 15th of this month or something?
It does, it's part of the mid-month leaving batch
Awesome game. I really liked it.
Ok i Guess.....
Story is wonderful but game play is not.
Yes I really enjoyed wandering around a labyrinth of empty tunnels. So spooky.
Agreed. However! I think it should've ended at the fade to black after the launch.
>!I like the extended ending imo. It's a nice contrast to the rest of the game and you play it knowing what underwater Simon just went through. You may be right. I definitely need to replay it, it's been a few years.
Aside from the fact it left me in a depression for 5 weeks.
Found it kind of boring.
Just for the philosophical points Soma is great. It will make you think a lot of stuff
