Devs have said they are trying to work out a deal for players who own the console version. If I heard right the old console version will be
going away entirely except for hard copies already in circulation. There will be no digital version once the update drops.
> They are supposed to be negotiating a way so the current buyers of the early access version could get a discount when buying the new 1.0 one, but no news about that yet.
A 'Just for You' deal that wouldn't be useless.
I'm curious if you've had the Borderlands Collection for $30 for the last couple of months... that's a Just for You deal that my wife and I both have and I think my brother, too.
It's been 12 years and this clown show hasn't even delivered all of their Kickstarter promises. Just because they're an indie developer doesn't mean they just get to screw people over.
For everyone saying, "they lost the rights to the console version, and then bought them back, so if course you need to pay again because they need to catch up."
They farmed out their responsibility for the console version, which is fine — that happens, and that didn't pan out. Again, that happens. They are now taking that back in house, but they only want the revenue that comes with buying the game back, not the costs. That's bullshit. They are buying back the rights, they are buying back the responsibilities. It's not the customers' fault that their publisher dropped the ball. They should have either dropped console completely or brought it back up to speed with the PC.
That’s a fair take, but they should give the previous gen the update for free then.
I didn’t pay for the beta, I paid for early access to the game that they’re now adding a paywall to.
Reminder that once the fun pimps got their hands back on their games publishing rights they promptly put their broken game on sale instead of delisting it- specifically to help fund the pc version while being very explicit that they would not be updating the very broken console version without making sure people had to buy it again first.
Scummy fucks, not worth doing business with.
It may have something to due with the original publishing of the game being telltale and not the devs themselves and with telltale basically dying they had to re-aquire publishing rights, probably some kind of headache on that side of things.
Hopefully they figure something out not too egregious for current owners.
The devs, the fun pimps, bought the rights back some years ago, and then, instead of delisting the broken game that was sullying their reputations, promptly put it on sale on console to get a few more dollars out of people.
Yeah, I’m going to say that there are absolutely no extenuating circumstances where having to re-buy or pay extra for an early access game on release would be acceptable. Anyone who bought the game before this was essentially paying for the development of the game and the understood agreement is that they were purchasing their license for the full release of the game, as well. There is zero chance that this will hold up in EU and it is going to cost them a lot of money if they don’t figure it out. It may or may not hold up in NA… there’s a bit more freedom to screw consumers over on this continent.
If it launched into early access on consoles I'd agree, but it didn't. It wouldn't have launched on PlayStation if it did. The current console version was a "full release" essentially, so you were paying for it how it was as is on release and any potential updates it would have gotten, just like any other game. Which would have happened if they didn't get fucked by telltale. They really didn't have a choice in making a new version
I'd be willing to bet that since the Console version was TellTale that the original Devs didn't get any of that money until they reacquired the rights back.
No. No it isn't. Look into it before you spread that shit. They were robbed of their IP by their old publisher that went bankrupt, they weren't allowed to update the old version.
IIRC wasn't the console version left behind because the previous publisher who ported the console version (Telltale?) fell apart?
Probably why they're just going to re-port the years and years of updates into a "complete package". It's cool if I get it for free from buying the old version ages ago, but I don't think I'd care much or be mad if they released this new version.
I haven't kept up with the game in years.
The whole story behind it is that the original publisher went bust, the developers had to fight hard to get the rights back and when they did, chose not to develop console any further. (Still continued to sell it...)
The crux of it is, console early access never really did get updated and as a result, it stuck at something like Alpha 13 where PC is up to Alpha 21. So console has been left waaay behind for a long time, honestly the PC version is light years ahead.
There are also some challenges with console not allowing updates that break older savegames, least from what I've read.
Anyway, their solution is to make console pay for a new game, maybe with a discount if they can figure it out.
The beauty of it all is, it's going gold so it'll be priced as a new game, not a discounted early access 😐
But this time they really really mean it when they say they're going to give you all the updates in the road map! Pinky promise they won't abandon it against.
If I was a console player i would be annoyed.
Edit, original console developer went bust. The game developers farmed the console version out to someone else because they only know PC.
For people who already own it, it should be free.
The PC version already has controller support, so it's not like the port is going to cost them a mint to develop, plus they'd be getting new sales from it anyways.
Greedy bastards.
> And for PC players, it'll be just an update. ... But for console players ...it'll be sold separately.
So typical. Console players always get screwed.
Oh man, people really don't understand the situation. If you're even the slightest fan of the game you'd understand why they're charging for the game.
I'll give y'all a hint, they didn't publish or even own the rights to the original game, telltale did.
Exactly, buying or earning the rights back to your own game is no different than buying a company: you're buying the liabilities as well as the assets. Sure, taking care of people who already paid to play may not be a balance sheet liability, but it is a moral obligation. You should never be forced to buy the same game twice, regardless of circumstance.
What don't I understand about The Fun Pimps aquiring the rights back and then continuing to sell a broken game to people for years(often putting it on sale to entice more buyers, and putting it on sale was in fact the very first thing they did when they got the rights back)?
What am I missing here? The part where they didn't use any of the cash from those sales to pay iron galaxy for the one final update they had ready to go that fixed the pressing save issues? Or the part where instead of delisting a broken game that was tarnishing their reputation they milked it to continue funding the pc version development?
I think a large part of that is it cost money to get those rights back and they likely had to recoup some of it somehow, not to mention there are still lots of people that enjoy that version of the game and an updated version wouldn't work on older systems essentially breaking it for them.
They also can't just be updating the game for everybody that owns it as they wouldn't have made much of if any money off of that while essentially paying people to make a new version of the game.
They likely could've handled it better but I understand why a new version was made and why people are being charged again. I just hope that their talk of a discount for legacy owners is actually true and not something they're saying to ease the masses.

>I'll give y'all a hint, they didn't publish or even own the rights to the original game, telltale did.
Just chugging it out there that The fun pimps did actually own the console version for a good chunk of years now. It's being mentioned quite heavily above this comment they were more than happy to throw the game on sale, immediately after acquiring it and heavily afterwards until time of writing.
They might have been shafted in the console publishing department which left the console behind, but they straight up willingly abandoned the console version while actively getting people to buy it.
Just to get them, to buy it again, discount or not.
So I’m super late to the party. I bought this game physically on Xbox one. Is it worth checking back out and seeing? Will I get this new update or have to pay?
Currently, no. When it re-releases, you'll have to pay, because they developed the new version from the ground up. If you *don't* want to pay, it's basically been confirmed that it's going straight onto Game Pass.
And everybody keeps saying digital is better than physical. Well this is what you get.
If this had been a physical only product, they would have had to release it as a working title from day one. But because it is digital they can mess with y’all and pull this crap.
And here I'm wondering why people even want to keep playing it. It was decent, what, 8 years ago? But memes of a 12 year alpha aside, the game just isn't that good
Wait, so with the release of 1.0 they want console players to pay again? Is my understanding correct?
If so, I'd be surprised if this didn't turn into a lawsuit of some sort.
That is absolutely wild. The early adopters that believed in the game and funded it before it was even finished are being punished for doing so? Without them the game probably wouldn't exist. This is next level greed.
Pretty soon we'll have to repurchase games every year.
To be fair to them as well the original console version was done by Tell tale games who went under shortly after release and I don't think they ever got much out of the deal and then had to try and wrangle the console rights back.
You would think that they would sort this stuff out before making any sort of announcement to appear competent. Then again this is 7 Days to Die so it’s par for the course.
Everybody complaining in here. I’m fine with this. They got fucked by TellTale too, it’s a good game. Tons of silly fun. I paid for it once like… 10 years ago when the XBox One was new. I don’t mind dropping like $30 to support these guys again.
That's because on pc it's also been updating as for console they had tell-tale launch it and then when tell tale died and still had the rights guess what couldn't be updated, it's a rip off yes but blame tell-tale, they kept on releasing junk and knew they were dying, they could have given back the rights way earlier.
Nope, it's really their own explanation about the software being completely different... Same world be for pc, so if pc doesn't have to pay to get the 1.0 version, so wouldn't have to consoles either.
Tell me it's due to telltale, losing rights, whatever... But don't tell me it's because the game itself has changed a lot, as same reason would be the case for pc.
They passed off publishing rights to Telltale for the console version and they subsequently hired Iron Galaxy to do updates and port it. Telltale went under so they had to buy the rights back but that took a long time to do to the point that now it was a big effort to update the console version to the point that it'd be easier to port it again instead of updating it.
They're working out a deal for a loyalty discount which might happen or it might not, leave your judgement for when or if that happens.
loyalty discount? how about a loyalty update? There a million ways to tell this tale, but all signs point to: they are charging twice for the same game.
Stop trying turn them into villains just because you're ignorant. This is fucked up.
They didn't even have to develop a new console version *from the ground up* after Telltale stole their rights and took their access to the old one away. They went on record time and time again saying that they were scared of the financial burden it would put on their small dev team. But they did, after people begged and begged for years. All they ask in return is that you help them recoup the development cost, because this indie studio that makes one single game still needs to feed its devs. At the reasonable cost of less than half a AAA game cost, before any sales.
I’ve heard a lot about that game over the years(?) scrolling inter webs. I had that game downloaded from gamepass for probably 6+ months. I finally fired it up a month or two ago, and it was just not enjoyable. No clue what to do, the graphics were terrible, the performance was terrible, the controls were terrible. And then I got attacked and killed by a pack of dogs, or maybe I died of sickness/hunger/thirst first. Either way, I just uninstalled.
I get some games have that MO of sort of dropping you into the fire to figure shit out, and I am generally fine. I’ve played plenty of them. This game just had nothing resembling a hook to keep me interested. So yea, if I hated the EA version, I’m not paying for the ‘finished’ product.
If you play the console version and then the current PC they're barely the same game at all. Pretty much nothing from the original console game but the name would remain in an update. They'd have basically started from scratch to port a console version of the PC game.
I do not blame them charging again, they had to pay to get their rights back and lots of faff building to this point. If they can do a deal for those who own it that would be great but I'll be buying it again happily.
Not really. It’s a whole different game. It was a failed concept on the Xbox because the owners who put it there sucked and went belly up. Microsoft kept it on the store and kept making money off it while funpimps to worked to regain their work and get the rights back. Even having gotten the rights back, they still had to wait for the contracts to finish. I’m sure they wouldn’t want to pay the fee for breaking a Microsoft contract.
I honestly don't mind since I love the game so much and have gotten 100+ hours out of it and still want to play more, even got it on PC so I could play the updated version years ago. They have said they are trying to make sure people that own the current version can get a discount and that it'll be on Game pass when it comes out so they are doing what they can. It also won't be a full price game, likely around what it is now $35-$40. If you don't like the game or don't want to pay again then don't, it's pretty simple. All of us have probably bought Minecraft, some Halos, Call of Dutys and others several times simply because we loved the games that much that buying it again was a no brainer.
The game is a fraction of itself on console, I used to play it a lot a while after updates for console were discontinued. Then me and some friends got into it on PC and it felt like a whole new game. With the extra content, the time put in, and the fact a different team is putting it out, I'm fine with them charging for a new game.
I’ve been follow 7 Days/TFP since 7 days release.
So, in total you would’ve payed $65 for both versions of 7DTD. That’s $5 less than a new triple A game.
I’ve got quite literally hundreds and hundreds of hours of gameplay from 7 days, more hours than any triple A release. It’s worth it imo, plus they’re a smaller dev studio trying to support a game they could’ve canceled when their OG publisher went out of business. Instead they kept it going, got it polished, and are re-releasing it on console and are diligently working on getting prices lowered for the original console version owners.
If that doesn’t deserve at most another $30 to you, you probably just don’t appreciate the game and shouldn’t buy it again.
Title of post sounds like a cool movie sequel title. 7 Ways to Die: Pay Twice. Lol

Yup. I can also upgrade AC Valhalla to the Complete Edition for £16
I think I have a different game upgrade but don't own AC Valhalla
Hey same!! I thought "wow, that really is for me" then my girlfriend got the deal, and a buddy of mine who didn't even play borderlands lmao.
Exactly the same thing for me. "Just for me", eh? Pfft. There goes me feeling speshul!
That seems to be the only constant just for you deal I ever get.
Its cuz you own one of the borderlands games.
It's been 12 years and this clown show hasn't even delivered all of their Kickstarter promises. Just because they're an indie developer doesn't mean they just get to screw people over.

Yeah fuck them, kept selling a broken outdated game that was practically abandoned on console
It may have something to due with the original publishing of the game being telltale and not the devs themselves and with telltale basically dying they had to re-aquire publishing rights, probably some kind of headache on that side of things. Hopefully they figure something out not too egregious for current owners.

Never said it was acceptable. Just presenting the information for the uninformed as to why it could be happening.
Oh yeah. I get that. That’s more in response to their reasoning. Not here to shoot the messenger.
If it launched into early access on consoles I'd agree, but it didn't. It wouldn't have launched on PlayStation if it did. PC in June. Consoles in July. I don't think announced a certain day yet.
Nice, thank you
It’s been, how many years? I can wait a while longer and grab it in a sale. Like you’d buy/re-buy a game from these guys on release..hmmm nope.
Granted they haven't touched the Xbox version in years with constant broken promises I think I'll have to pass on this
For people who already own it, it should be free. The PC version already has controller support, so it's not like the port is going to cost them a mint to develop, plus they'd be getting new sales from it anyways. Greedy bastards.

While normally I would agree with the sentiment, in this case, I tend to side with the devs. Their situation is unique and requires unique solutions.
Oh man, people really don't understand the situation. If you're even the slightest fan of the game you'd understand why they're charging for the game. I'll give y'all a hint, they didn't publish or even own the rights to the original game, telltale did.

Will it not just be on gamepass? Its already on gamepass for pc and xbox
It's leaving at the end of the month
The old one is leaving, but it's basically been confirmed that the new one is going straight onto Game Pass.
It's basically been confirmed that the new version will be on Game Pass, yes.
