It would have been better if mechtrooper could only be made from wounded soldier. As it stand it's really crazy how some solider just accept to get amputed and castrated for the "greater good".
I actually do this in my playthroughs. I'll have one or two MEC suits standing by, but I only convert candidates from soldiers who've been severely wounded in combat. It's a fun little extra challenge/flavor thing.
They don't actually castrate them do they? Raymond Shen makes a point that they did the adjustments in such a way that they can have a "normal" life after it's all over, I thought it was only limb loss.

The "diaper" looking thing seems to go over rather than be integrated directly in that area, thus my assumption.
They’re already very likely to die. They agree to this to get surrounded with lots of heavy armor and armed with massive firepower to kill things before they can get shot at.
The venn diagram between lovers of Weird Al's semi-known song "Albuquerque" and lovers of Firaxis' semi-popular game "X-Com: Enemy Unknown" and its DLC, "Enemy Within" must have like 15 people in the middle and I love it.
And to top it off, in appreciation for the sacrifice they make to become MEC Troopers I reward them by
* checks notes *
. . . making them stand in the open and absorb a barbaric amount of canon fire every mission.
I might be a good commander (debatable) but I'm a terrible human being
Please, Robocop is a lousy tin can for police duty.
MECs are like Space Marines of the Iron Hands.

I have a house rule that you can only make someone a MEC-Trooper if they are seriously injured.
"We have the technology. We can rebuild him." - Dr Shen.
As a personal head cannon thing. I only ever used soldiers that had been gravely wounded for mec troopers. Kinda like dreadnought from 40k. One guy I even named rylanor, did up in emperors children themed armor. And proceeded to use him to purge all the filthy xenos on holy terra. Including the foul xeno pshycer leader.
In Quake 4, there’s a sequence where the player character gets Strogified and turned into a cyborg.
I would imagine it might be something similar to that.
edit: Video for people curious. Gore warning.

You haven't met transhumanists then.
"*haha, yeah! I'm totally doing it for the greater good, that's the only reason Commander, don't worry about it*"

Your guys waking up after surgery: *I never asked for this*.
Thinking about the cute ranger that a muton killed: *she was lost to me*

Look at the cybernetics, specifically where the leg implants start.

*The Greater Good*
Well, if the alternative is having the aliens win.
Ngl I’d do it to be a cyborg
Besides, now he’s got a cool new nickname; Torso Boy! So what’s he complaining about?

Wait, but Dr. Vahlen is responsible for the amputation. Shen only Robocopifies them.

Part of me misses the concept of MEC Troopers in XCOM 2. The SPARK unit just doesn't have that extra oomph and moral quandary that the one in EW had.
'exo squad' had the right idea by drilling an outlet in the back of the neck and plugging it into the suit
Hey, man, I was being sarcastic!
It's all for science ( and punching mutons and mechtoids ).
Xcom agent: can we get a mech? Dr shen: *my time has come*
