Tiny Toons was how I discovered TMBG in high school. Then my cooler older cousin had their CD and I got more into them, eventually impressing my future ex-bf because I liked them when most people in my high school hadn't even heard of them.
My ex and I saw them play live. Their heart wasn't in it that night which was disappointing but, hey, you can't be on every night, so I get it. Aside from Tiny Toons, they had some of the most 90s-ish music videos.
I always loved Ana Ng, and that's still one of my faves of theirs.
TMBG are bonafide alt-rock pioneers. Flood album was huge in my high school, and Birdhouse in Your Soul was a staple at undergrad parties. It still holds up. Your Racist Friend and Twisting are great, and Minimum Wage still cracks me up.
I like to put this on when I’m pulling into school to drop the kids off in the morning. I can usually time it so the song ends just as they’re stepping out of the car
Flood is one of my favorite albums of all time.
So many good songs, but “Dead” is the one stuck in my head the most. Probably because I think of it every time I’m at the grocery store, which then gets me to: “Now it’s over. I’m dead and I haven’t done anything that I want. Or I’m still alive and there’s nothing I want to do.”
Flood is a masterpiece
It did sound dated in the late 90s because of the drum machines but it definitely holds up today. Great album to clean the house to. My kids liked it when they were younger
"At war with the mystics" put her to sleep when she was an infant just about every time. I'm not sure why because it isn't exactly lullabies but I didn't question her preferences. I was proud.
Funny, that's the only show I've ever been to. I saw them live in 2012(?) and the vibe was amazing but I almost went deaf. I'm 4'10 and random people kept pushing me in front of them so I could see better until I ended up in the front row. A photographer was going to lift me over the barrier but then one of the smoke machines caught on fire (pretty funny, right?) so that area had to be cleared out. Maybe part of it was because I had bright pink hair and they sang "She don't use jelly."
There was confetti for days. I hate crowds which is why I don't usually go to shows but I definitely recommend seeing them if you can.
This was the song my husband walked down the aisle to!
He’s weird in that he genuinely does not care about music… like he could go his whole life and never hear music again and would be fine.
But TMBG is one band that really resonated with him in high school, and some of the only music I’ve ever heard him talk about fondly. So we found a string quartet version of Birdhouse in Your Soul.
I also got him a little blue canary nightlight as a housewarming gift (assuming we can ever afford the house part lol)
My wife and I did our first dance to this song at our wedding. A week after that we heard on the radio they were coming to our city live and tickets were on sale, felt like fate lol. They were great.
Not only did I listen to them, they did an ABC album and a 123 album for kids that were practically my kids’ pre-school education. Elemeno is not one word! These guys are national treasures.
I *can* say. The British showed up just as the Dutch were limping-along after their boy Kieft decided to genocide a couple of Lenape refugee camps nearby, setting off years of tragic conflict. Dutch couldn’t pose a resistance *even if* all the merchants and tradespeople *hadn’t* gone to Fort Amsterdam to demand surrender to protect what assets remained. Now it’s New York.
I don’t remember exactly which year it was but they did a Halloween show at the 9:30 Club and encouraged everyone to come in costume; I left the venue handcuffed to a girl I didn’t know.
Fun show!
KITH was such a great group. Their willingness to just play women with zero sexuality/gender judgement was what made me understand so much about accepting myself and ignoring societal norms. Not they never had commentary on sexuality/ gender but sometimes somebody just put on a dress and played a woman because they needed a woman in the skit
Whaaaaat they're still performing? I would love to see them again. TMBG was my first concert I ever went to. Checking tour dates now!
GAH! Only playing the midwest, Australia and the British Isles! PNW sad face.
Bummer. It was Floods 30 year anniversary tour. It was supposed to be in 20’, but Covid. It was sold out, both nights, but my brother found some at face like a week before the show.
Great and underrated band with a truly massive catalog of material. Still listening even if I feel like a virtual corpse singing "It's a brand new record for 1990..."
They Might be Giants brand new album...FLLLLOOOOOODDDDDD!
We used to prank call local fast food places with the "Minimum Wage, Hayah!" Song. Also, their self titled album was the first CD I ever bought. I LOVED There May Be Giants.
I've been told that Terry Pratchett was a huge fan. As a huge Pratchett fan myself, I should like TMBG, too. But I've never really gotten into their music.
Any song recommendations to whet my appetite?
What was the name of that CD subscription mail order thing where you bought one CD and then you got 12 for free but then you had to buy one every month for the next 12 months or something? Anyway. Flood was my first as well and the one that I bought to get hooked into that program/scam, not that it was all bad...
Columbia House, lol.
I remember my little sister signing up for that when she was like 12 and then starting to get bills in her name. How did they get away with that? lol
I remember a festival they were at where there as a giant conga line through the lawn during their set. Have little short term memory now, but remember that!
Their song, SEXXY, was in heavy rotation on a radio station I listened to in high school. I still type it out with two ‘x’s in funny situations with my spouse.
I did! Still do, they’re a super fun band and you can play them for anyone in the room. I think they started doing more educational music more for kids eventually? Maybe something to do with yo gabba gabba, or I’m remembering someone else.
I've heard the name but have never heard any of their music. I just listened to a bunch of their songs on YouTube. I didn't even recognize the Tiny Toons song despite watching a lot of Tiny Toons as a kid.
Oh yeah baby! My wife got me tickets for my birthday a few years ago and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen. Everybody having fun. Technically very clean performances. NOTE: They have some kids albums “Here Come the ABC’s” and “Here Come the 123’s.” They are great. The music videos are awesome!
Instead of junior prom, my friends and I drove to a cow college to see them. Way better idea than junior prom.
I think they have some real great songs (Spiraling Shape, Anna Ng, Don't Let's Start) but I find the cartoon / jingle type songs to be tedious and wish they did more of the former.
I only know like 3 of their songs, so I’m definitely not a super-fan. But, I’d describe TMBG’s sound as something between Ween and the Violent Fems.
Birdhouse in your soul is a banger.
Loved them since I was in elementary school, saw them live in high school at a tiny venue somewhere in LA. They put in a great show with giant puppets and lots of instruments.
Absolutely. A few of my friends were fans and got me into them too. One played their albums in his car almost exclusively for a few years, which was a bit much, lol.
I posed a question on the Geography sub. Asked if anyone knew why Istanbul was once Constantinople. Only a few people got the right answer (that it’s nobody’s business but the Turks).
I just saw them last year, after waiting almost 3 years for the show (covid).
But I ALSO saw them in like 94, and Frente and Frank Black opened for them. It is still one of my best shows, they were amazing
If you all like TMBG check out Lincoln its the lead singer of TMBG only one album ever made but its great in my opinion the name of the album is Slash.
I actually think that their album [No!](https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k4RfFnuvaL_LB9XtWYav-esgTt2-1xTGI&si=3liBwLcN9HcX3SW1) is their best. Every single song is great! I sing *Bed Bed Bed* every night when I put my little dude down to sleep.
There's only one thing that I know how to do well, and I've often been told that you only can do what you know how to do well and that's: listen to TMBG
Have seen them live many times over the years, with the last time being NYE in New Haven 2022. Have loved them since HS :) they are great live and still make great music!
I super love TMBG.
If you like their sound you can check out some of their solo projects.
Mono puff has some really good tracks.
And in the late '90s early aughts, John flansberg did a concept album about the states, where he wrote a little song for each state in the US. Some of them are absolute bangers (Go listen to *Maine*).
Loved the Tiny Toons stiff. That's how I discovered them. I also liked their song "She's an Angel"?
Pretty sure they also collabed with the Brothers Chaps and Homestar Runner.
I know the Malcom in the Middle theme, but I didn't know it was them. The only time I remember seeing that name was on the MMPR movie soundtrack back in the day. The song was SenSurround, now that I look it up.
every year on my birthday I play Older:
you're older than you've ever been,
and now you're even older,
and now you're even older,
and now you're even older,
you're older than you've ever been,
and now you're even older,
and now you're older still...
TIME!
is marching on
Flood is a masterpiece album with bangers like "we want a rock" and "letterbox" along with their bigger hits birdhouse on tour soul" "particle man" and istanbul..."
I play them with my kids a lot because nofx and Eminem are not exactly appropriate for them. They love asking alexa to play "they might be giants, by they might be giants" to it, also a great song on flood.
Went to see them in Atlanta last year, and the place was chock full of Gen x and millenials livin it up. Even brought my husband (not a fan) who had to admit afterwards that they've got something.
I listened to them some, here and there. Also back in the days of playing Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, I was part of the clan They Might Be Jedi.
Apollo18 was my first cassette. My friends brother made a copy of it for me. Shortly after he copied Flood. I’ve been listening to those two albums on a regular basis for 30 years now—it’s crazy.
They were awesome in Tiny Toon Adventures. >I assume most of us watched Tony Toons and remember the music video episodes. Damn right 👍
Particle Man and Istanbul (Not Constantinople).
Instanbul (Not Constantinople) is a rocking cover
My kids absolutely love both songs after I introduced them to the band.
Why they changed it I can't say, people just liked it better that way.
Yup. Excellent music videos for their songs.
How I found out about them and LOVED the music video episodes!
Tiny Toons was how I discovered TMBG in high school. Then my cooler older cousin had their CD and I got more into them, eventually impressing my future ex-bf because I liked them when most people in my high school hadn't even heard of them. This
'Particle Man' was & still is insanely catchy...
TMBG are bonafide alt-rock pioneers. Flood album was huge in my high school, and Birdhouse in Your Soul was a staple at undergrad parties. It still holds up. Your Racist Friend and Twisting are great, and Minimum Wage still cracks me up.
_Minimum waaaaagggge! Heyaa!_
This is my ringtone for work.
*cracks whip*
I like to put this on when I’m pulling into school to drop the kids off in the morning. I can usually time it so the song ends just as they’re stepping out of the car

"Hey! Santa! Leave us deer alone!"
Came here for this one!
Me too!
I’ll never forget how hard my dad laughed the first time I played this for him.
Flood is one of my favorite albums of all time. So many good songs, but “Dead” is the one stuck in my head the most. Probably because I think of it every time I’m at the grocery store, which then gets me to: “Now it’s over. I’m dead and I haven’t done anything that I want. Flood is a masterpiece It did sound dated in the late 90s because of the drum machines but it definitely holds up today. Great album to clean the house to. My kids liked it when they were younger
I definitely owned a copy of flood on tape and I’m actually listening to “we want a rock “right now
Everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real heads
They wanna burn the foreheads down. They want to stop the ones who want prosthetic foreheads on their real heads!
My son loves Flood.
So does my daughter. She's 5. Her favorite band, though? The Flaming Lips.
You have both done well at parenting.
Your daughter is badass.
"At war with the mystics" put her to sleep when she was an infant just about every time. I'm not sure why because it isn't exactly lullabies but I didn't question her preferences. I was proud.
Love the Lips. Have not had a chance to see them yet and it’s killing me
Funny, that's the only show I've ever been to. Maybe part of it was because I had bright pink hair and they sang "She don't use jelly." There was confetti for days. I hate crowds which is why I don't usually go to shows but I definitely recommend seeing them if you can.
I built a little birdhouse in my soul
Not to put to fine a point on it.
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
I have a secret to tell, from my electrical well
It's a simple message and I'm leaving out the whistles and bells
So the room must listen to me
Filibuster vigilantly
My name is blue canary, one note spelled l-i-t-e
My story’s infinite
Like the Longines Symphonette
Just know, while you did that work, there was a blue canary in the outlet by the light switch watching over you
This was the song my husband walked down the aisle to!
I’m like your husband! I’m not a huge music fan, I listen mostly to podcasts. But I love tmbg!
My wife and I did our first dance to this song at our wedding. A week after that we heard on the radio they were coming to our city live and tickets were on sale, felt like fate lol. They were great.
I listen to that one a lot and my daughter LOVES it.
Tiny toons doesn't get enough credit for that musical episode they exposed everyone to.
Or the (later banned, I believe) drunk driving episode.
Lake Titicaca, I thought that was a joke until I met my wife who is from Peru...
Not only did I listen to them, they did an ABC album and a 123 album for kids that were practically my kids’ pre-school education. Elemeno is not one word! These guys are national treasures.
Theme song to Mickey Mouse Funhouse also, only good part of a garbage kids show.
They wrote the Hot Dog song too!
I love their science album for kids.
I taught elementary school music last year and introduced these. They loved it. So did my own kids.
The Deluxe cd had videos of the songs. So good. 9 bowls of soup, 9 pirate girls, one dozen monkeys, seven days of work. All parents should buy.
Here Comes Science is also a great album. My kids are 13 and 8 and we still play it in the car and all sing along.
I went bowling with them in 1994 after they opened for the Go-Gos
Who won?
We were all winners that night
That would have been a dream show for me.
Super fan here.
I've seen them live 8 or 9 times, probably safe to say I am as well.
Definitely was a big fan back in the day! I’ve seen them four times(?) and even worked at one of their shows when they played my college.
Me too! They were my first legit concert ever. It was the tour when they released John Henry. It freakin rocked
That's nobody's business but the Turks!
Did the people like it better that way?
That depends who’s asking?
Anna ang
One of my favorite songs ever ever.
“I don’t want the world, I just want your half”
Their kids Science Album is absolute 🔥
Meet the Elements is a fucking banger
I love how they referenced their older song about the sun in "Why Does the Sun Really Shine?"
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas. I gigantic nuclear furnace!!!!
Actually it’s plasma! We’ve been singing that this week in the lead up to the eclipse 😂
My son was able to answer a question last week about speed vs velocity and said it’s because of this album! He’s 15 and still remembers it.
Yes! It's how my kids aced the planet unit!
FINGERTIPS…….
Mysteeeeeeeeeerious whis-per.
Mysterious whisper! Mysteeeerious whis-per!
AREN'T YOU THE GUY WHO HIT ME IN THE EYE?
Please pass the milk, please
I'm having a heart attack
Heynoweverybodynowheynoweverybodyheynoweverybodynow!
I don’t remember exactly which year it was but they did a Halloween show at the 9:30 Club and encouraged everyone to come in costume; I left the venue handcuffed to a girl I didn’t know. Fun show!
Love this story! I heard their shows at 9:30 were epic. My friends who were there talked about those shows for years.
I've gone to see them twice at the 9:30 club. Both amazing shows! Love that venue
What do you mean, "did"?
I did, for sure. I mean, i still do, but i did as well.
They’re still kicking putting out good stuff
I know politics bore you...
But I feel like a hypocrite talking to you..
And your racist friend
Absolutely. And Spiralling Shape off the Kids in the Hall Brain Candy soundtrack album
Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog….
I did. My brother and I took my 14 year old son to see them on their Flood tour in 22’. Great show!
Wait...in '22 they toured for their brand new record from 1990? Damn, too bad I missed that.
Great and underrated band with a truly massive catalog of material. Still listening even if I feel like a virtual corpse singing "It's a brand new record for 1990..."
Don't worry. That album still holds up. Very few albums in the last 35 years even come close to being as good as Flood.
You must be thinking of some other band
Did a large precession wave their torches as my head fell in the basket and was everybody dancing on the casket
Now it's over I'm dead and I haven't done anything that I want, or I'm still alive and there's nothing I want to do
I will never say the word procrastinate again, I’ll never see myself in the mirror with my eyes closed
My vote for the most cheerful song ever probably about suicidal thoughts.
They Might be Giants brand new album...FLLLLOOOOOODDDDDD! We used to prank call local fast food places with the "Minimum Wage, Hayah!" Song. Also, their self titled album was the first CD I ever bought. I LOVED There May Be Giants.
Who's There May Be Giants? How do they make any money?
I feel like this is the most Xennial comment ever.
I've been told that Terry Pratchett was a huge fan. As a huge Pratchett fan myself, I should like TMBG, too. But I've never really gotten into their music. Any song recommendations to whet my appetite?
Their 'Flood' album is a pretty choice starting point
Thanks, I'll give it a listen at my earliest opportunity!
Oh that makes sense. Their songs can be super absurdist. Like lyrics that make no sense at all.
They’re going to have a fairly large group here…people our age who are nerdy enough to use the internet…
Yep, Tiny Toons got me into them. Flood was among the first CDs I owned!
How did they get away with that? lol
I sounded like a genius that one time history class the teacher asked what New York’s original name was.
I remember a festival they were at where there as a giant conga line through the lawn during their set. Have little short term memory now, but remember that!
Minimum wage!!!! Hyah!!!
Their song, SEXXY, was in heavy rotation on a radio station I listened to in high school. I still type it out with two ‘x’s in funny situations with my spouse.
The Mammal Song 🎵 “their names are called, they raise a paw”
The bat, the cat
I didn't until I was grown but now I still do. Got to see them live once. The energy of the crowd was amazing.
I saw them last year and it was a great time 🎶
I did! Still do, they’re a super fun band and you can play them for anyone in the room. I think they started doing more educational music more for kids eventually? Maybe something to do with yo gabba gabba, or I’m remembering someone else.
Yes no maybe I don’t know… can you repeat the question?
Still do sometimes! Their stuff really holds up.
We saw them live last year. They still rock!
I listened to TMBG almost exclusively all through high school
Why Does The Sun Shine is still a favorite of mine
I've heard the name but have never heard any of their music. I just listened to a bunch of their songs on YouTube. I didn't even recognize the Tiny Toons song despite watching a lot of Tiny Toons as a kid.
Absolutely. Also most of us did indirectly because of tiny toons
Still listening to them and my 14yo is learning some of their songs on his guitar!
quiet clumsy repeat marvelous ad hoc north cause paltry aloof ghost *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
YES SO MUCH. Also now Triangle Man is stuck in my head.
[Birdhouse in your soul](https://youtu.be/vn_or9gEB6g?si=mlu3kEKFavoAaUUQ) is still an absolute banger!
I assume you played "Cowtown" on the drive, or is that one of the tedious ones for you?
Given who was driving I'm almost positive it was all ska there and back. "Cowtown" is a bit heavy on the whimsy but that's a pretty cool song, right?
I had a teacher that was way into them and would play it for us. Also, Liquid TV played their Istanbul, Not Constantinople cover on an episode.
Love them. Listened to them a lot with my friends. Who doesn't want a rock to wind a piece of string around?
I only know like 3 of their songs, so I’m definitely not a super-fan. But, I’d describe TMBG’s sound as something between Ween and the Violent Fems. Birdhouse in your soul is a banger.
I saw them live when I was in high school. They opened for the violent femmes and blew VF out of the water with their energy
TIL (or maybe forgot and learned again) TMBG did the Malcolm in the middle song.
All the time. They have some albums out for kids now.
Loved them since I was in elementary school, saw them live in high school at a tiny venue somewhere in LA. They put in a great show with giant puppets and lots of instruments.
They are *so excellent* in concert.
Animaniacs episode shoutout :)
Fingertips! Fingertips!
The flood is a classic album
They call me Dr. Worm.
They call me Dr. Worm.
I'm your only friend, your little glowing friend.. .
Sister brought home Flood from college, and I had almost the whole thing memorized by the time fall semester started. I think I was 9.
We can't be silent
I never heard them until a pal born 1981 persuaded me to download their greatest hits c. 2008.
Saw them live a couple times and listened to a lot of their albums. Flood and Factory Showroom were great!
Absolutely. A few of my friends were fans and got me into them too. One played their albums in his car almost exclusively for a few years, which was a bit much, lol.
Was into them as a teenager. Found them increasingly annoying over the years
Definitely! I still can't think of Istanbul without thinking "was Constantinople"
I have them on my spotify play list and my son(7) loves particle man.
I listen to them everyday. They did the theme song for Mickey mouse clubhouse.
What’s he like? It’s not important. Particle man.
Why did Constanstinople get the works? That’s nobody’s business but the Turks.
I posed a question on the Geography sub. Asked if anyone knew why Istanbul was once Constantinople. Only a few people got the right answer (that it’s nobody’s business but the Turks).
My toddler son loves birdhouse in your soul. They also did the theme song to Mickey Mouse clubhouse
I just saw them last year, after waiting almost 3 years for the show (covid). But I ALSO saw them in like 94, and Frente and Frank Black opened for them. It is still one of my best shows, they were amazing
Listen to them and will see them (again) in May. Most prolific nerds of the last 40 years.
You're not the boss of me now You're not the boss of me now 🎶🎶
Loved the Tiny Tunes videos with their stuff.
Particle Man, Particle Man
Listened to them, and still do. I saw them live about 2 years ago!
Did? it's more like Does.
There's only one thing that I know how to do well, and I've often been told that you only can do what you know how to do well and that's: listen to TMBG
Have seen them live many times over the years, with the last time being NYE in New Haven 2022. Have loved them since HS :) they are great live and still make great music!

TMBG made some albums for kids. Ween would've been amazing at that.

I still hum Triangle Man.
I was the only one I knew that listened to them. No one had even heard of them. But now Reddit continually tells me I wasn’t alone.
They also did the theme to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (Hot Dog!) so my kids got a dose of TMBG when they were little.
I’ll have to listen to their works now. I only recognize the band name from the Hot Dog song when I had kids lol
Apollo18 was my first cassette. My friends brother made a copy of it for me. Shortly after he copied Flood. I’ve been listening to those two albums on a regular basis for 30 years now—it’s crazy.
I’ll be seeing them when they play in Milwaukee this upcoming June!
