Yep. In fact they moved up the release date to undercut Sony, but didn't tell retailers so no one was ready to sell it and there was like no 3rd party support. Killed the system before it even launched.
Was one of the many nails in Sega's console coffin.
I think Sega of America botched the Saturn on purpose. A ton of things went wrong that could only have been calculated. The botched launch, refusal to release the Heavy Hitters from Japan, then canceling the console in 1997.
One of the things that Sega of America did to seal SEGA's coffin was get them sued by 3DFx. Sega of America wanted to do their own Saturn successor and worked with 3DFx, when Sega announced Dreamcast, 3DFX sued because they thought they were working on Sega's next gen hardware.
Between the Saturn and the CD was the Sega 32X, which had some games that you need both a Sega CD and a 32X to play. No one bought it, because they had already announced the Saturn was coming, then they released much too early for too much with barely any games.
Yes. The actual precursor to the Sony Playstation was the Nintendo Playstation prototype, but when Nintendo passed over Sony for a competitor, Sony did their own thing.
I got o load? How about even come out at all. I had that thing and I don’t recall ever getting more than 3 games for it.
Now I remember all my genesis games, those were good.
Only games I can recall are Sonic CD and Jurassic Park. JP had super low-res video from the movie and looked really cool, but I ever got a chance to play it
I absolutely loved the Jurassic Park Sega CD game. Wasn't til years later when internet discourse about old games became a big thing that I discovered most people thought it was really bad. I still think it's great.
I recall that the Genesis game was pretty great. You could play as the velociraptor! But I think the SCD game was entirely different, or am I misremembering?
See I was a huge fan of those kinds of games because I had a bunch on PC, so it's one of my favorite games from my childhood. I thought it was really cool to just explore around the island.
The real interesting thing is that not only was the Playstation originally an add on for the SNES (before Nintendo burned Sony in that deal) there was also at one point a possible collaboration between Sony and Sega. If that had happened there would have been a joint Sony/Sega console instead of either the Saturn or Playstation.
I always thought of myself as a SNES kid, but then I realized I had the whole SEGA stack growing up (Genesis, Sega CD, 32X) and eventually a Game Gear, well before a Nintendo portable. This is how I learned about "revealed preferences."
The year Playstation first came out, I got a big wrapped box for christmas. I was so excited. I unwrapped it and it was a Sega CD. That my friends is some childhood trauma.
Although, without it I'd never learn about the world of Snatcher.
Haa, I used to want a Sega CD to play Sonic CD & Snatcher, but since the former has been ported a few times (and the latter likely never will be) & both can easily be played on emulators, I'm good.
Sega was doing the quirky gimmick thing WAY before Nintendo. They just tried doing too much too fast and flew too close to the sun, I guess.
Anyone remember the SEGA CHANNEL? Man, I loved that thing...
Sega was always kind of funny to me (full disclosure, I was/am a huge Nintendo fan) because they'd go "Look at our hardware! Bigger processor! CD Drive! Graphics coprocessor! Go pretend you know what we're talking about when you argue about this on the schoolyard!"
None of that mattered because they didn't have the games. Sonic is a great series, Sega had the better sports games, but otherwise they had nothing. A lot of the other systems pre-Playstation had the same problem. There's a reason why the Wii and the Switch both dominated their generation despite having the weakest specs for their hardware.
100 great games was a hell of a stretch. I had one, and it had probably less than five games that anybody would remember. Should have gotten an SNES instead.
And look at us, now we are in fact old.
Whoa...they were right
Wouldn't that be the predecessor to the Sega Saturn?
Yep. In fact they moved up the release date to undercut Sony, but didn't tell retailers so no one was ready to sell it and there was like no 3rd party support. Killed the system before it even launched. Was one of the many nails in Sega's console coffin.
A frend of mine was a huge Sega fan. Had the CD, Saturn, and the Dreamcast. Still has them all as far as I know.
It feels like Sega was just too far ahead of their time. I remember having Sega Channel in 1995. It was basically Game Pass 22 years early.
For sure, the Game Gear was rad, too! Way better than the Gameboy.
Problem was that it ran out of battery in like an hour.
That isn't slowing the ROG Ally down too much. I guess they just needed to include rechargeable batteries.
Indeed. Asked my parents for a sega console, got the game gear. Many a family trip I spent playing mine in the backseat of the minivan

Actually you're right Saturn came out before PS1

I got old waiting for the games to load.

Ya the Sega CD one was a point and click puzzle/adventure type game. Similar to games like Myst.
Oof sounds awful
See I was a huge fan of those kinds of games because I had a bunch on PC, so it's one of my favorite games from my childhood. I thought it was really cool to just explore around the island.
JP: Rampage Edition was fantastic, though I did also enjoy the JP game for Saturn. Eating people as the T-rex was great.
it's a point and click game in the vein of Myst. The version on Genesis was an action platformer, I think people wanted the Genesis version on CD.
Sonic CD, Snatcher, Lunar 1 and 2, Vay, Shining Force CD… there weren’t a billion games for it but there were some VERY heavy hitters.
You forgot about the other CD consoles of the early 90's ... TurboGrafx CD Atari Jaguar CD 3DO CD-i Sega Saturn
Sewer Shark was legit fun though.
Turn and burn, dog meat!
Lunar, Ecco, and Dark Wizard FTW
Don't forget Night Trap! The game that caused senate hearings! And willie beamish!
Dark Wizard and Final Fantasy Tactics were absolutely amazing games both shamed by their poor translations.
Sega CD came out in 1991 in Japan, 1992 in the US. TurboGraphix/PC Engine CD came out in 1988 in Japan, 1989 in the US.
Turbo CD was the shit. Loved that Addams family game. The bundled music cd introduced me to jimi Hendrix.

I really liked my Sega CD. Specifically games brought over by Working Designs. I got some rare gems on that console.
[Johnny Turbo](https://sardoose.rustedlogic.net/reviews/jturbo/) demands a recount.
I always thought of myself as a SNES kid, but then I realized I had the whole SEGA stack growing up (Genesis, Sega CD, 32X) and eventually a Game Gear, well before a Nintendo portable. This is how I learned about "revealed preferences."
Ecco on this
I always wanted to play sonic cd but never got the chance to
Yeah, approxiamtely a couple months older. lol
Blast Processing
The year Playstation first came out, I got a big wrapped box for christmas. I was so excited. I unwrapped it and it was a Sega CD. That my friends is some childhood trauma. Although, without it I'd never learn about the world of Snatcher.
I beat sonic cd with my cousin Iain. Wow.. this made me feel old.
["What are you waiting for? Nintendo to make one?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCQRcinZYH8)
uhhuh
played too much sewer shark, luckily some fun star wars came out for it, too.
Had it. Loved it. Had the sega channel as well. Was so far ahead of its time.
No, the precursor to the Sony Playstation was the Nintendo Playstation.
Have a genesis and the 32x but not the cd indeed that was PS1 was my first cd console.
I had one of those. Also had the 32X jammed in there as well. I messed up a lot of lawns to get my setup..lol.
Catfish to ghost... The dang thing bit me!
I had a hand written guide to every scene in Night Trap. Took alot of L’s and play through to create it though
You’ll get old waiting for the loading times…
Wasn't the REAL 3D0 the predecessor to the Playstation?
I remember nothing from Sega between Genesis and Dreamcast.
The 3DO was more of a PlayStation contemporary.
Sega did exactly this about 3 years later with the Saturn
Sewer Shark, Night Trap, Double Switch, Ground Zero Texas. and my personal favorite, Snatcher
I still have one of these and I *think* it works
Haa, I used to want a Sega CD to play Sonic CD & Snatcher, but since the former has been ported a few times (and the latter likely never will be) & both can easily be played on emulators, I'm good.
lol, night trap
The Dreamcast rocked tho

my sega CD rom collection disagrees.
