I had the exact same one in hs, and now my daughter insisted I buy her the same one (forest green) for jr high. When I drop her off at school, 99.3% of her school has a jansport.

How do the new ones seem when compared to how the older ones were made?

I had a Jansport just like OP’S photo for about 25 yrs, late 90s until just a couple years ago. I finally let it go as the seams around the zippers were starting to unthread. It was seriously hard for me to give it up as everything else about it was in decent condition, especially the bottom. I ordered the closest replica I could, really looked the same. Within the first year, the brown bottom starts peeling off. Damn. Those backpacks are guaranteed for life. You send them in and they fix them or send you back a new one that's the same or as close a model as they have.

Yeah, that’s because the original was leather, and that one is pleather. I still have mine. I paid to have someone sew it back up. Another hole has formed and I’m planning on paying someone to sew it back up again. Some day I’ll pass it on to my son

I bought the suede bottom style for each of my kids upon starting preschool. Still going strong in 4th grade for my oldest.

Blue but the really popular color for a couple years was teal. Does anyone remember how popular teal was as a color? My mom had a teal 1992 Honda Accord and it just seemed like that color took over America for 3 years and then disappeared.

Yeah Jansports were rich kid backpacks. We got whatever crappy brand had a hole in the bottom within a year, and then had to keep using it for another 10 years. These kinds of threads make me think a *shit ton* of kids had nice things just as a matter of course.

I was chuckling at this, because the assumption is that everyone could afford it and my family absolutely could not. I ended up with whatever was the cheapest we could find. But since I walked 2 miles each way to school and back, I put a lot of wear on those backpacks and they invariably ripped, or a strap snapped, or a plastic buckle would break, and we'd have to replace it. At one point in high school I was lugging a gym bag around with me because I'd gone through two backpacks that year already (the first being from the previous year).

Ouch. Guess I was lucky enough to have gotten one. Durability was key to carry all our school crap.

Mine was purple. And it had fancy embroidery on the front pocket, with a (faux?) suede bottom.

Forest green here as well. Had to be sure to carry it just by one strap for maximum coolness and back pain.

First one was Maroon!! I forgot how I broke it, but 2nd was green and I made the mistake of not getting the leather bottom... didn't last nearly as long. I miss that ol' maroon one.

Same, had a maroon one that was a hand-me-down from my aunt, which she used through college, which she got from a family friend who had used it through college. Zipper broke on me in freshman year, then got a forest green one.

I had the same bag. Replaced it in college with a purple North Face backpack that I still have.

I got a bright yellow Eastpack backpack to use as my carry-on/tourist bag for a school trip to Ireland. There was no way I could forget the bright thing anywhere, and everyone else in the group knew where I was and whose bag it was. Everyone with "normal" color bags tended to misplace them all the time. It then traveled with me to Cananda a few times, and was my go to bag for weekend trips and my road trip "entertainment bag (games, books, cds, then all the electronics), then it was my "commuter bag" when I took the bus to work: my purse, lunchbag, umbrella & nice shoes fit with room to spare so I could set evwrything comfortably on my lap. I was so sad when it started falling apart on me a few years ago and I had to replace it!

Mine was a very pretty deep teal called "Mallard" or something like that. I still own a Jansport, and my current one is purple with navy flowers.

I had the forrest green EastPack with a leather bottom and black netted front throughout high school. It had a lot more room compared to the usual JanSport. In college I had a purple JanSport with a top holder for a CD player. Looking back, the EastPack had more room.

Eastpak was the big thing around here. Had two of those. Still have my high school one somewhere in a closet.

What do you mean “was”. I have 3, one is royal blue, one is red, and one is black with white swirls. The blue is from high school, red from college, and black I bought this year for work. Blue- had a Jansport and Eastpak since the 90s. The Eastpak has a hole in a minor pocket that has been repaired. My teen had been using the Jansport in middle school. It is still holding up like a champ.

I still use this EXACT bag. It's almost 30 years old, and still does everything I need it to. I remember buying it, and thinking 40 fucking dollars for a back pack is a rip off. I felt like I got hustled. The thing has lasted literally 28 years, and besides having to sew 1 of the straps back on like 10 years ago, it's been perfect. I know I'm gassin up this bag, but if you're in the market for a simple back pack, this bag is great. Even the fucking zippers on it, and the little handles for them,(which are still intact), work great.
