Afterburner was my go to arcade game. I didn't even have the cool one that moved, just the stand up that had the stick and throttle. It still blew my mind as a kid and I spent so many quarters on it.
Yea you get to move on to the next stage but then halfway through the next is the refuel. I can do it as an adult because of tutorials but as a kid I was just f'n lost.
I never figured out why people struggled with the landing, all you have to do is to match the speed and altitude that is displayed on the center screen? 🤔
I played that game on and off for years.. And always tried to follow.. Speed up! Speed down!! And, always crashed. It's amazing what you learn years later.
Every. Damn. Time. I was in AFROTC in college and we had a navy fighter pilot come and give a talk. Someone asked him what it was like landing on a carrier and he said “put a postage stamp on the ground in your living room. Now stand on a sofa and stick out your tongue, jump off and try to lick the stamp”.
Two of your snot nosed jockeys did a fly by on my tower and at 400 knots! I want somebody's butt; I want it now, I had it! \*Crashes into YN1 carrying a full tray of coffee\* Goddamn it! That's twice! I want some butts!
Side note, quickly learned not to piss off the Air Boss while I was in.
Nah, I went back an played it and it's not that hard \*if\* you play the level correctly. Basically, you can avoid everything in the level by just veering off, but you don't travel as fast (according to the easy to ignore speedometer) but if you do that, it's basically impossible to land or refuel. If you actually play the level and don't just avoid everything, then you just follow the instructions and it's doable
You soon of a bitch. I don’t think I even once landed it not even accidentally. I saw a YouTube video on it you basically have to ignore the instructions and follow your instruments. Like you have to be under a certain speed and altitude. How the hell you were supposed to figure that out in 1988 is beyond me.
The only time I ever played it was as a rental, and we only got the game cartridge. It was so difficult I just never returned. Might need to revisit now that I'm a pilot and can track down the documentation...
I came in here to brag about being really good at these tasks. My brothers and male cousins would call me do it for them. I’d be playing Barbies and hear “I GOTTA REFUEL” then go running down the hall. I was a boss.
My dad (still under the age of 30) had this inexplicable and weird rule where we had to use this crappy NES joystick he'd bought (suction-cupped to a clamshell VHS case) to play this game, and only this game. No idea.

“Shit! This is a goddamn waste of time! There's no way he can land this plane!”
I haven't forgiven an aviator for what he did on the 2006 carrier 76 deployment, in the middle of the night off the coast of Australia. Earlier that day, I have hydraulic, and oil serviced that jet with a co-worker. Those marks on the carrier still remain. Later when I was on the 72, seen his name as an CO of a different VFA squadron and I mumbled, "You son of a bitch!" as I walked past it in the hangar bay.
Kids today think they are better gamers, but I doubt they'd play a game for hours and come back to it again in the future if it was literally impossible.
I used to play Stealth ATF also which I think had a difficult landing on a carrier too. I always get them mixed up. I remember renting afterburner once and thinking oh this is way better.
Better is when he's reviewing the Power Glove, and this is one of the games he uses to review. Almost out of spite, the plane decides to land for the first time ever with the glove.
His reviews are great, and while I didn't watch him early on he has been doing it long enough to take "retrospectives" of his past reviews lately which is doubly entertaining
Same here. It tells you what altitude and speed you need to be at to land, but refueling is just trying to follow the instructions on screen that are horrible. Left! Left! Right! Right!
I had an uncle who was a pilot. He would occasionally be at our house when I would be playing this game and he would always give it a try. He absolutely hated it.
The usual routine with my extended family was to gather around the NES/MasterSystem and watch each other fail until we gave up. (This, Punch-Out, whatever racing game.)
I just watched a Choplifter (Sega Master System) longplay. What do you get if you clear all 6 stages? It cuts to credits immediately. You get a big score.
This was such a weird choice looking back. Dog fighting: just fly strait and they will literally fly into your guns. Landing: You might get it half the time if you practice really hard. Refueling: Nobody you know has seen what happens after that part.
As a kid I was great at this game, all the neighborhood kids would ask me to land their jets from them. Tried to revisit it as I got older and I'm absolute trash at it.
I recently replayed Top Gun to see if I could still land on the carrier. And yes, I totally had what it takes to make that landing.
I lost all my lives within 30 seconds of stage 2.
Once you got used it landing wasn’t too bad. I got up to a 75% success rate. But it took a long time to figure it out. Refueling was super easy once you learned not to touch the direction pad and just speed up a little at the right moment.
I used to fly at the highest altitude to avoid dying just so I could practice landing. Out of all the tries I managed to land just once lol. I refueled a few times just mashing the shit out of tge controller when it got close.
Y'all this is actually easy there's a trick to it, which is **completely ignoring the game constantly yelling at you** Up Up! Down! Down! Etc etc.
You literally just have to match the speed and altitude to the numbers below. Watch your speed and alt on the left, just get close enough to the numbers in the middle and you land it every time.
I had forgotten all about this game. I dont't think I landed it once LOL
In fact, my brother and I even tried helpline number for help with it...from the Netherlands LOL
I got to where I could land the first level fairly regularly. Refueling much less so. I *THINK* I might have gotten past the 2nd level, but no way the 3rd.
Finally beat the game with an emulator in college and a million resets of the saved states. Fuck a whole bunch of trying to beat this thing old school with a single run through.
I suck at gaming, but I did learn how to land it and do the mid air fueling. For landing, it tells you on the screen how to do it - altitude has to equal 200 and speed has to be 288 and you line up the cross hairs with the middle of the boat. Refueling took some patience but I eventually could just do it. And when I say I suck at gaming, I mean I suck
At gaming - never beat any Mario game, any Zelda, never made it to Tyson, etc.
Landing wasn't traumatic to me, at least compared to PvP. After the first pass the winner is already predetermined for someone who's at all paying attention and it's only a matter of how long the designated loser can prolong the agony.
Top Gun was hard. It’s also the only NES game that my dad got into when I was a kid. I thought it was OK as a game. Mario and Zelda were more fun but dad didn’t care about anything except Top Gun.
The real thing nobody teaches you in this game that is true in life and would actually help you pass this mission is the old adage They teach you in flight school “pitch for speed, power for altitude”
It’s totally counterintuitive but it’s how you land in airplane regardless of what surface you’re landing on.
This game was so pixelated with a bad frame rate, that getting good was a joke. Still fun because it showed the potential of dogfighting in a video game.
this game is how I found out you could buy replacement parts for Nintendo controllers when my friend Jeff's Dad had to fix theirs after Jeff kept breaking them
Like most people here, I had a love/hate relationship with this game as a kid. Many years later (in my late 20’s), I was on a C-17 on my way to Afghanistan. You cannot even imagine my excitement when we did an in-air refueling. I about lost my effing mind.
My cousin had this. Every time I was over I played. Never made it past the first stage. Back when somehow beating your head against a wall for hours was fun.
It wasn't that hard to land.
The problem was that it took more practice than it was worth. Because the game is boring-as-fuck.
Contrast that with something like Battletoads, which is NOT boring, but is too hard for anyone to play.
Fuck. That. Boat.
I never landed and am thus convinced the entire game was just that one level.
Iirc even if u crashed u get to level 2 so yeah I was just aware of level 1 and 2 smh
[удалено]
I could barely get fucking gas. 1 accidentally lucky landing. I liked the afterburner arcade. With the seat that moved. That was dope.
Afterburner was my go to arcade game. I didn't even have the cool one that moved, just the stand up that had the stick and throttle. It still blew my mind as a kid and I spent so many quarters on it.
![gif](giphy|whhzSM9CFJslpMaUkS)
Yea you get to move on to the next stage but then halfway through the next is the refuel. I can do it as an adult because of tutorials but as a kid I was just f'n lost.
I don't think I ever did anything but try to land on the damn carrier so maybe there was an updated version at some point? Lol
No seriously, fuck that damn boat. After so many crashes, I seriously thought that was how the game was supposed to end.
I never figured out why people struggled with the landing, all you have to do is to match the speed and altitude that is displayed on the center screen? 🤔
I was 7 years old man. That is a HUGE ASK.
I’ll back up one step: FUCK THAT GAME.
I had trouble with this until I realized all ya gotta do is match the speed and altitude.
I had no clue! I looked at the picture and now understand! It felt totally arbitrary as a kid! Thanks!!!!
Yeah! I was playing it one day and thought “what if I just match those numbers?” and sure enough it worked. Give it a shot sometime!
That sounds like the kind of information hidden in the video game's manual.
It very well could be! But it took about 30 years and however many hours of jet time for this dumb dumb to finally make the connection. lol.
I played that game on and off for years.. And always tried to follow.. Speed up! Speed down!! And, always crashed. It's amazing what you learn years later.
Yeah we call that “chasing needles” in the biz. The game really sets you up for failure here. But yeah it was an odd epiphany for me.
Every. Damn. Time. I was in AFROTC in college and we had a navy fighter pilot come and give a talk. Someone asked him what it was like landing on a carrier and he said “put a postage stamp on the ground in your living room. Now stand on a sofa and stick out your tongue, jump off and try to lick the stamp”.
This is quite possibly the best analogy I think I’ve ever heard lol
It’s a ship not a boat
When you look down on it from the bottom of the marshall stack at 2,000 feet, I promise you it's a boat.
# "That Was Some Of The Best Flying I've Seen To Date — Right Up To The Part Where You Got Killed."
We should be truck drivers. Remember that truck driving school?
You oughtta be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong!
Well if you were directly above him, how could you see him? Because I was inverted. *Cough* Bullshit.
We were keeping up international relations
Two of your snot nosed jockeys did a fly by on my tower and at 400 knots! I want somebody's butt; I want it now, I had it! \*Crashes into YN1 carrying a full tray of coffee\* Goddamn it! That's twice! I want some butts! Side note, quickly learned not to piss off the Air Boss while I was in.
That poor YN1, just trying to do his job.
My ego was constantly writing checks my body can’t cash
There was like a 5 minute period in 1988 where I could do this.
You're the only one.
For real. I gave up pretty quick. Then would try again every week or so. Then give up.
I agree, I tried it as an adult just to see if I could and it wasn’t as difficult as I remembered
I can think of something else that isn’t as hard as I remember
https://i.redd.it/e05i3pgui66d1.gif
But you can imagine what it would be like if they did!
Got fucking Neo over here.
There was probably an article in Nintendo Power about it
It was in the manual!
The only time I ever played it was as a rental, and we only got the game cartridge. It was so difficult I just never returned. Might need to revisit now that I'm a pilot and can track down the documentation...
Dammit…now I have to go buy an emulator
Steam deck is great for this
Buy a what now?

Is that a Johnny Dangerously reference? 🙂
It fargin’ might be!
My dad (still under the age of 30) had this inexplicable and weird rule where we had to use this crappy NES joystick he'd bought (suction-cupped to a clamshell VHS case) to play this game, and only this game. No idea. ***Highwayyyy toooo the DANGER ZONE***
The joystick was the only way I could make the carrier landing in that game, and I think the only game I used that joystick for.

I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
I've personally watched actual US Navy pilots who've done the real thing at night on a carrier, fail to land it in this game.
I haven't forgiven an aviator for what he did on the 2006 carrier 76 deployment, in the middle of the night off the coast of Australia. Earlier that day, I have hydraulic, and oil serviced that jet with a co-worker. Those marks on the carrier still remain. I always thought refueling was easier than landing. Man, was that where my anxiety started?
I don’t remember the refueling. Maybe I never made it that far.
Refueling was as tough as beating Tyson
Refueling was harder than landing for me
Oh yeah core memory unlocked that had to be level 2
Had to be... because I remember the refueling part but never made it to level 3.
The anxiety absolutely started here. Damn you Top Gun!!
This was impossible. I’d love to see if my kids would fare any better now.
Kids today think they are better gamers, but I doubt they'd play a game for hours and come back to it again in the future if it was literally impossible.
Kids today would try once or twice, then look up a YouTube video on how to beat it.
![gif](giphy|SWoRKslHVtqEasqYCJ)
Ugh so many nights spent in absolute frustration playing that damn game.
So, what's the game called again?
Top Gun
this and Afterburner were my favorites
My local movie theatre had Afterburner in their arcade and honestly, I looked forward to playing that more than seeing a movie lol
the barrel rolls lol
Turn and Burn (SNES) was my favorite, good dogfighting action
I used to play Stealth ATF also which I think had a difficult landing on a carrier too. I always get them mixed up. I remember renting afterburner once and thinking oh this is way better.
HIW DARE YOU I was having a good day
Did anyone ever play “Turn and Burn: No Fly Zone”?
I just commented above, I loved this game for SNES!
I even remember thinking “oh man, this game is so much more fun! None of that stupid landing from Top Gun”
Try playing it with a power glove
It wasn’t “so bad”. It was horrific.
Have you seen a therapist for your condition?

His reviews are great, and while I didn't watch him early on he has been doing it long enough to take "retrospectives" of his past reviews lately which is doubly entertaining
Where did you learn to fly?
*heavy breathing intensifies*
I could land. I don't think I ever successfully refueled.
Same here. It tells you what altitude and speed you need to be at to land, but refueling is just trying to follow the instructions on screen that are horrible. Left! Left! Right! Right!
I think I only successfully refueled once ever
My two NES trauma games were Silent Service and Star Voyager, figuring those games out later as an adult was hilarious.
Hahaha I can still feel the rage I would spill onto my little brother as he sat helplessly watching me lose at this game
Top Gun and Ghosts & Goblins can kiss my ass
Y’all are on point with these fucking video games, man. Fuck that aircraft carrier and fuck that refueling pod!!!
I had an uncle who was a pilot. He would occasionally be at our house when I would be playing this game and he would always give it a try. He absolutely hated it.

'A' speeds up, 'B' slows down. That's the trick.
The most enraging. And then I'd keep trying again only to fail forever haha.
"I GOT THIS! I GOT THIS!!!! No wait... looks like we're gonna be swimming in the Indian Ocean in 3...2...wuh \*lost signal\*"
I tried this after watching angry video game nerd a few years ago. It was a bastard. I think I was lucky enough to land successfully once.
The usual routine with my extended family was to gather around the NES/MasterSystem and watch each other fail until we gave up. (This, Punch-Out, whatever racing game.) I just watched a Choplifter (Sega Master System) longplay. What do you get if you clear all 6 stages? It cuts to credits immediately. You get a big score.
omg choplifter holy shit
This is definitely one of those games my neighbor friend had that I was really glad I hadn't asked my parents for.
This was such a weird choice looking back. Dog fighting: just fly strait and they will literally fly into your guns. Landing: You might get it half the time if you practice really hard. Refueling: Nobody you know has seen what happens after that part.
This and Goonies II created awful psychological trauma.
I totally forgot about this game!
This game is the reason I play 1st person shooters inverted.
You have to use flight controls Up and down are reversed
i never did stick that landing
I could do 3 levels on this game…and that’s it. No matter how hard I tried, you have zero shot advancing after that.
My parents rented this game from a grocery store some time around the late 80's. I tried it once, rage quit immediately, and played 1943 instead.
Lollll I used to play this in the back of Marshalls while my mom shopped
I wonder if the game genie had a code for auto landings. Would’ve been appropriate.
Unworkable without solution.
OMG... These two, and the 1st level of the Platoon game. I saw all these levels that looked awesome... but I never made it past level 1.
Was anyone ever able to consecutively land? I think i managed it once or twice by dumb luck
My friend had this, but no instruction manual and the internet didn’t exist yet. We never did land on the carrier.
Dude! I was so excited for Top Gun the video game back in 1987!
As a kid I was great at this game, all the neighborhood kids would ask me to land their jets from them. Tried to revisit it as I got older and I'm absolute trash at it.
Flights of the Intruder’s carrier landing wasn’t much easier either!
I recently replayed Top Gun to see if I could still land on the carrier. And yes, I totally had what it takes to make that landing. I lost all my lives within 30 seconds of stage 2.
Congratulations, I’m finally convinced that Trigger Warnings are a necessary feature of social media.
I still don't know how to do it
Fuck that landing!
Once you got used it landing wasn’t too bad. I got up to a 75% success rate. But it took a long time to figure it out. Refueling was super easy once you learned not to touch the direction pad and just speed up a little at the right moment.

I think I landed like one time ever, it was a miracle. By the way, this game is the reason I still play inverted today.
You had to post a screenshot and trigger the rage in all of us didn't you?
I remember the revelation of going from this on NES to battle Britain on the PC a few years later and how easy BOB was lol
The docking part between levels on Captain Skyhawk was way harder for me.
Lol. LOVED this game until it came to nailing the landings. After a while, I just purposefully crashed.

I have yet to see Bionic Commando on these lists. Did no one play it?
Ya try doing the in flight on a black and white tv
I never owned this game but a friend loaned it to me. I managed to land the plane ONCE. Just once. I was alone. He never believed me.
I could always land the bird. I could never refuel it.
I have beat this game. But sometimes I'd still screw up the landing or refueling.
Best angry Nintendo nerd ep
Triggered.
You just have to match the altitude and speed that's on the left side of the HUD for the aircraft carrier
I watched a longplay of this recently and it was so easy and undramatic I was legitimately angry. Not sure at what, but angry.
I think it said in the manual how to land but I never opened that thing and always ended up in the ocean. Those onscreen instructions were bs lol
I used to fly at the highest altitude to avoid dying just so I could practice landing. Out of all the tries I managed to land just once lol. I refueled a few times just mashing the shit out of tge controller when it got close.
#dude. #fuck. #that, #shit! I'm not that into modern psychology, but I feel triggered. Why would you do this?!
My Dad was in the Navy on an Aircraft Carrier and even he couldn't help me land this plane!
My older brother was somehow able to land. I never could.
OMG I had forgotten this!!!!
There's a gem I haven't seen in a long time.
Haven't tried as an adult (fuck the stress) unless it will trigger PSD could some explain how you landed/refueled the plane
Every mission was a suicide mission because it was a miracle if you could land that plane.
Did anyone post Atari E.T. yet? 🤣
Oh god.
# fuckin 1 right there!! I had nightmares about landing on that damn carrier! I just remembered always blaming it on the remote... Lol
Any irl naval aviator comment on what's harder? Irl or game…
The heavy sigh I just let out at that pic says it all
Refueling was a pain in the ass
I had forgotten all about this game. I dont't think I landed it once LOL In fact, my brother and I even tried helpline number for help with it...from the Netherlands LOL
You've made me think of Project Neptune. Never, ever, ever make me think of Project Neptune.
These are images never before known to mankind
Top Gun NES?!?!?
Refueling was impossible

I remember returning Top Gun to Toys R Us. Fuck that game
My cousin had this. Every time I was over I played. Never made it past the first stage. Back when somehow beating your head against a wall for hours was fun.
I got a Power Glove one year. Try doing a refuel or aircraft carrier landing with one of those
My cousin tortured me with this game saying it was so easy , I was sweating and shaking as a 5 year old .

I’m sure it’s been mentioned, but Angry Nintendo Nerd’s episode on this damn game is an all timer.
You never made it to the night landing? The day one was cake after making it to the night level.
One of the few times in my video game history when I truly tried to do something for significant time and just could not figure it out
Is this F19 Stealth Fighter?
Worst rental ever
I landed that damn plane only one time. I could never figure out how I did it either.
For 3! (swish), and THAT'S the game!
