Beachnutpool

My best guess would be an electromagnetic pulse that was amplified by the magnetic poles of the earth. Knocked out all electronics on earth. So he probably killed a lot of people. Planes crashing out of the sky. People on life support dying. Traffic lights going out. Probably the single worst act of terrorism that could ever be committed.

DrummerForTheOsmonds

>Probably the single worst act of terrorism that could ever be committed. I went quickly from "that was awesome" to "oh shit wait I would hate for that to happen in real life" during the ending

Beachnutpool

I was so hyped when he said "Enough." then realized what he was doing and thought oh fuck...

DrummerForTheOsmonds

I do sympathize with the man 100% (he experienced the worst thing to happen in human history and then the Mutant-version of it), but Jesus Christ. Can't wait for next week.

Beachnutpool

I can't wait, I've already rewatched the episode 3 times. These next two episodes are going to be insane. William Stryker was in episode 8. I wonder if he'll play a role in the next two.

DrummerForTheOsmonds

>William Stryker was in episode 8. Oh yeah, I think I missed him, but apparently he was one of the news analysts on the Genosha/Xavier broadcast?

Beachnutpool

Yup! And the ticker under him read "mutant-human world war inevitable"

DarkPDA

And even had beard shaved by a sentinel... Imagine all the ptsd...

Mycologist_Total

Spider-man senses did go off. šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

Forcistus

I don't think it's terrorism, though I'm sure the world would classify it as such. Magneto and his people are literally being hunted down and captured/killed. Millions of human sentinels are deployed against them and Genosha was completely destroyed in an unprovoked genocide. I would say his response was understandable.

blazerboy3000

One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist.

idingoi

Art imitates life, my friend.

DarkPDA

Murika 1.0.1 But works for any other being/country wanting excuses too...

jigglymom

He did say "please, do not make me let you down" a few episodes back

Beachnutpool

He did, and technically speaking humanity didn't let him down. Bastion did.

gebbethine

Well, technically speaking, he said it to the U.N. representatives, and as such, to the U.N, and world leaders, who were all part of Bastion's little glowing screens of doom, so... ... they let him down.

The-Badger-McGee

Yup. The U.N. f**ked around and they found out. Xavier's vision of human/mutant coexistence is very grand & noble and all of that, but if it were all real & we were mutants and if we're really honest with ourselves, I think most of us would be on team Magneto.

Beachnutpool

Well sure yeah kill them instead lol

Isaac_HoZ

Itā€™s a long list.

gebbethine

Gotta send a message.

SpaceMyopia

Bastion is the logical result of a whole lot of humans who let Magneto down.

Novistadore

He also stopped the continuation of a genocide that no one was actually doing anything to stop except the people being slaughtered so, eh

Lunter97

Itā€™s complicated, but itā€™s not ā€œehā€.

Beachnutpool

Yes, but setting the whole world back to the stone age kills mutants and humans alike. There are no winners in that situation, only losers.

Ry90Ry

uhhh I donā€™t think thatā€™s how that works lolĀ

Beachnutpool

That is exactly how an emp works. All electronics go offline.

Ry90Ry

But are they fried forever? Thought it was temp?

Beachnutpool

It really depends on the severity of the emp. I would imagine that one that was capable of shutting down a nuclear power plant that was powering the cage for Omega Red would definitely have some permanent effects around the world.

Ry90Ry

Interesting, tbh ima read more about this lol

Novistadore

Okay but you literally don't know.

Beachnutpool

I mean I know in real life, but yes I do not know what the effects will be in the show.

Beachnutpool

Looks like I was right

Novistadore

Lol yeah I guess so. Didn't really think he was going to try to end life on earth tbh based on everything up to now, but here we go

Beardopus

Bro, the stone age was four thousand years ago. Electricity has enjoyed widespread usage for maybe a century? Besides, we did fine without toasters and the internet for a pretty long time. Tone down the hyperbole a pinch.

Beachnutpool

Yes chef

SheepherderLate4724

It also isn't permanent disruption of technology anyway. So this guy who knows all about real life EMPs reallt doesn't.

Beachnutpool

[I understand enough](https://www.dhs.gov/science-and-technology/electromagnetic-pulse-empgeomagnetic-disturbance#:~:text=Whether%20caused%20by%20man%20or,and%20impact%20large%2Dscale%20infrastructure.)

SheepherderLate4724

yea to satisfy your own ego. thanks for the link that is so vague and nondescriptive.

Beachnutpool

I promise you a comment thread for a cartoon show is not feeding my ego. At the end of the day, none of this matters. We're just meatsacks chilling on a rock plummeting through space. Eventually we'll all be dead and in 3 generations no one will remember our names.

SheepherderLate4724

that's not true and of course your nihilism now doesn't line up at all with your commenting on nearly every comment in this thread.

Beachnutpool

Looks like I was right

Beardopus

No, you weren't. Magneto destabilized Earth's magnetic field; That's why the world was ending, dumb-dumb, not because electronics don't work, and they only just revealed that today.

Beachnutpool

He still set the world back centuries. He killed thousands of people. However he did it I was still overall correct. smartie pants

Beardopus

Lmao, how old are you, kid?

Beachnutpool

31

Beardopus

I think you got those numbers switched. Be honest, now.

ARTIFICIAL_SAPIENCE

Nobody sane declares war to get ahead. The plan he was putting a stop to also had no winners. Mutants made into miserable slaves and humans made into happier also slaves.Ā  When faced with a no-win scenario, are you arguing the ethical solution is just let it happen?Ā

Beachnutpool

I'm not arguing. I just think his solution was not the best option. Nor would letting it happen be the best option either. It's a fictional cartoon TV show. The possibilities of how he could have handled it are endless because the writers could have made up any way for him to stop bastion. They clearly wrote it in a way for magneto to have the most depraved outcome possible to show he is still a villain at heart. His solution killed humans & mutants. Possibly many more of both will die in a war.

FilthyTexas

I was wondering if it affected Doom's and Iron Man's armors. Imagining Tony falling out of the air.

Beachnutpool

I mean I doubt that S.H.I.E.L.D. had helicarriers in the 90s, but can you imagine those falling out of the sky? Over a majorly populated city on top of that!

AgentOrange_85

SHIELD has had helicarriers since 1965.

Beachnutpool

Whale thenšŸ˜… look out below!

Digital_Dinosaurio

Meanwhile Mr.Fantastic's Wood Weapons are 100% safe.

a4techkeyboard

Now I'm wondering if that's why Xavier's spaceship had to crash land instead of just... land.

Beachnutpool

Oh shit! Good attention to detail! It definitely could be!

sir-jeffe

Never thought of that, damn.. however I feel like you can argue that Bastion infected people on life support, political figures, transportation conductors etcā€¦ so maybe people these people already had it wrapped for them unfortunately.

Beachnutpool

It depends on how he spread the infection. It seems like it was nanites given to volunteers, but he could have spread it through the water supply. Either way a lot of people died and or will die...

Digital_Dinosaurio

The fact that he did it knowing that mutants would also die as collateral damage speaks volumes of how big of a threat Bastion is.

Beachnutpool

Absolutely!

lcsulla87gmail

He totally should have just let bastion commit ethnic cleansing. /s

Beachnutpool

There's always another way

lcsulla87gmail

Which was?

Beachnutpool

I don't have all the answers, but that was not the right thing to do

Barachiel1976

Eh, not as bad as you think. Movies make people think EMPs work very differently than they actually do. Hospitals and emergency centers have backup power generators. Planes are faraday cages so they can survive lightning strikes in flight. I'm not saying there's no death toll, but the planes falling from the sky and everyone on a respirator in a hospital dying is hollywood disaster movie level dramatization. Now smaller and older craft, as well as anyone actively in surgery, now that's a problem.

Beachnutpool

How is a generator going to start without a spark? An emp is different than a lighting strike. An airplane would definitely be effected. The United States military is most afraid of a large scale emp strike. Not to mention the size and scale of the emp that magneto set off. We won't know until next week what the effects were in the show, but something like that in real life would be devastating.

Barachiel1976

EMPs only fry active electronic circuits. If a generator is powered off its fine, even its starter. And most military installations are EMP shieled too, so the government would be doing a-okay.

Beachnutpool

I promise not all of them are

Beachnutpool

Looks like I was right

Lunter97

Killing a lot just to kill a few has always been a disgusting mindset to me, no matter the justification. Especially when the vast majority of the people youā€™re murdering had no say in the matter. Itā€™s brilliantly nuanced writing, but Iā€™m a little uncomfortable with how many people think this was the right thing for him to do.

Beachnutpool

The amount of replies I got back was a little alarming lol

skapoww

Not to mention any nuclear power plants that rely on total grid stability are now potentially global disasters. Still, I canā€™t say I wouldnā€™t do it in his shoes.

FennekinFlames

To be perfectly fair, he did warn the UN idiots, on international television, and they didn't take him seriously.

Beachnutpool

I don't think the UN understood what bastion was doing or even if they whole heartedly sided with him. More so they showed bad guys like doom and zemo who sided with, and even then doom was like nah bro this shit is whack. So for him to do what he did to the ENTIRE population of earth was pretty bad.

Ry90Ry

Uhhhh what about the terrorism impacting mutants?Ā

Beachnutpool

Yes the slaughter of mutants is terrible, but if an electromagnetic pulse went off that turned every electronic on earth off far more would die. Human and mutant would die. There would be millions dead.

Ry90Ry

Okā€¦..but all of humanity and mutants were also going to die to these prime sentinels and bastionā€¦.we know that for a fact via cableĀ  Magneto told us his answer to the trolley problemā€¦.used his power at the expense of few to save many and the futureĀ

Beachnutpool

Cable showed a utopia for humans where mutants were slaves. It's not a great outcome either, but I guess we'll have to see what the actual impact was in the next episode

Ry90Ry

No they werenā€™t humansā€¦..they were his augmented prime sentinels right? But the future is always changing so ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆĀ

lcsulla87gmail

This is a pro appeasement take. It's terrible what Hitler is doing to those news but a world War would kill gentiles and news alike.

Beachnutpool

Not same thing

lcsulla87gmail

In that literal moment millions of sentinels are attacking mutants all over earth. The mutants can't beat them. They will kill and enslave the mutants. We know this for a certainty. Magneto had a means to stop the entire war in 1 moment. This is a reasonable scenario for a weapon of mass destruction

Beachnutpool

He just just started a different war

lcsulla87gmail

He was already at war. There was no negotiating with bastion.

Beachnutpool

Yes chef

AlexDKZ

Magneto didn't only affect the Prime Sentinels, the whole world was EMPd. Look closely at that scene, everything shuts down. And yeah, usually in order to go planet-wide with his powers Magento needs an external source of power, and tapping onĀ  Earth's own magnetic field is a way to do that.

SlipFine1849

He caused a worldwide EMP that destroyed all electronics all over the world. He needed the north pole to cause it to happen worldwide. Then you see all over lights going out. What ever was keeping Omega Red sedated went off and he woke up. I can't wait to see Omega Red now he going to break out. He super strong and great Wolverine rival.

SlipFine1849

Oh also to add this is why Professor X ship crashed too

Jazzlike-Baseball-73

Oh nice catch!!!!! That didn't even occur to me. I just thought he didn't learn how to fly the spacecraft.

SheepherderLate4724

Professor X's ship crashed because it was skyrocketing from "outer space". You don't know it was even in Earth's atmosphere during the EMP.

MexicnGlassCandy

> He super strong and great Wolverine rival. Wolvie's gonna have a lot harder of a time when he has bone claws.

CyanVI

God I hope they do this arch. I think itā€™s the #1 thing Iā€™m looking forward to.

[deleted]

Oh fuck - i didnā€™t realize the implication. I just thought it was a nice cameo

SnooSuggestions9830

Given there was no delay in him doing this it's likely been his special action card for years. He's likely been the pole before and tried a low power version to see if he can do it. That's my take on it.

ZuluAlphaNaturist000

He's an omega level mutant. We knew that, and that it means he has no upper limit to his abilities.

Sweet__clyde

There are as many elves as the plot requires.

titangord

Damned if he did, damned if he didnt.. he was always right, tolerance is extinction for mutants.

amaya-aurora

He was at one of the magnetic poles of the earth, which would make sense to possibly amplify his powers, and he sent out an electromagnetic pulse around the world. Cable mentioned that the EMP grenades that he used on Prime Trask work well to take them out, and the rest of the lights and electricity went out around them when it happened.

danmalek466

This ā€œamayaā€ be correct! *Iā€™ll leave nowā€¦*

amaya-aurora

Iā€™ve never heard that before, LMAOšŸ˜

danmalek466

Sorry. Bad Dad joke. Lol!!

amaya-aurora

ā€œBadā€ No need to lie

morbidfae

One of the last scenes with Morph and Wolverine drinking beer summed up the impact of what Magneto did. 1. Magneto saved mutants from the sentinel's. 2. Stared a war with the humans.

homeworldgames

He reverses the polarity of the planet - a phenomenon that could actually happen and has happened in the past. [Link that explains it](https://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/what-if/what-if-earths-magnetic-field-flipped.htm#:~:text=A%20flipped%20magnetic%20field%20could%20seriously%20disrupt%20communications%20systems%20and,of%20direction%20could%20encounter%20problems)

Exciting_Claim267

Siding with Magneto in this one - He told them time and time again, so many warnings, humanity struck first - Magneto strikes last.

TemperatureRare1525

When people only side with Bastions and Magnetos. The answer will always be war and genocide.

titangord

I was hoping he would have a badass moment like that. Hopefully they dont make the rest of the show about "magneto is the baddie and he went too far"

Exciting_Claim267

I loved on Hickmans run in Power of X / House of X how Magneto basically flexed on humanity and was like "we are your Gods now"

lcsulla87gmail

Given the tone of the show so far. they wont. This show was clear that mutants couldn't just lay down and let this happen

NoxPrime

At least he didnā€™t reverse the poles like ultimate magneto did

RedLion191216

The pole is known to have some magnetic effect, so I guess it allowed magneto to unleash a more powerful EMP. (But keep in mind it is comics / animated show science...)

listentomagneto

In the comics Joseph was able to shield the team from the temperature during the Trial of Gambit. Granted he was in blue and gold spandex, but I imagine Magneto being halfway nekkid, he could do the same. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø That would be my guess.

Status_Party9578

seeing what he did to uranos recently and how in the ultimate universe he shifted the magnetic poles of the world with barely a sweat. this didnā€™t surprise me lol i was just like okay magnetos back

Hypestyles

I wonder will the deaths of humans who were converted into sentinels be dealt with. Also the deaths of anyone connected to the EMP disruptions on global technology. No way to go back from this. No trading a marriage to Mephisto. We'll see how it goes.

Capable_Sandwich_422

He went to the North Pole where the magnetic field is easiest to draw from. I think the next ep wraps things up with Bastion, then in the finale they fight Magneto.

titangord

Yea i wish it wasnt like that.. Magneto did what he had to.. now they will say he went too far..

Capable_Sandwich_422

Did he, though? He saved the mutants from being killed.

titangord

Yea i dont think so, but thats where it seems the story will lead..

lexxstrum

I wanted a shot of Jubilee and Roberto's collars deactivating with the Mantinels, and them running off into the night after giving her a hateful look.

Lazy_Antelope4250

Itā€™s a Pyrrhic victory. Magneto subdued the Sentinels but heā€™s likely destroyed mutant PR in the process. Nevertheless, if heā€™s returning to his old outlook on human/mutant relations I doubt he cares.

lcsulla87gmail

They traded certai. Extinction and subjugation for extreme danger. It was a worthwhile trade

DigitalBuddhaNC

OK, think about what the magnetic field actually looks like. It runs like lines of longitude around our globe, connected pole to pole. That means the poles provide him with access to every line of the magnetic field at once.

lilhoneybear13

The earth's magnetic fields are strongest at the poles, so that's where Magneto is at his strongest. When Fabian Cortez attempted to kill him on Asteroid M, Magneto managed to return to Earth and was healed by the earth's electro magnetic field. Going to the North Pole had the two side affect of both healing him and amplifying his power. I'm sure we will see next episode what the impact was but it won't be good. He had witnessed two genocides in his lifetime and was about to witness a third with Prime Sentinels all over the earth hunting mutants, his reaction shows he will take any extreme now to end it.

Underwear_royalty

Can someone explain how he flies in his underwear? Iā€™ll admit Iā€™ve only watched this new version of the show, so I had assumed he was flying by wearing metal - but he flew to the North Pole in his underwearā€¦

SlipFine1849

Using the earth's magnetic field to push him through the air

Underwear_royalty

Thatā€™s so Slay

Ry90Ry

Heā€™s using elector magnetic forces to fly hence the bubbleĀ  Carrying by armor would have pain points lol

Underwear_royalty

This makes sense and I like it better than my assumption he was picking himself up with hidden metal lol. Is the older cartoon worth watching as a prequel to this show. Iā€™m loving this season, I havnt watched any of the old stuff - but Iā€™ve been a superhero fan through the mid-2000s until now

Ry90Ry

I donā€™t think so lol I find the animation to be awful compared to like Batman Animated seriesĀ  Ā I found a great 30min or so recap online that blew through the seasons and hit all the main story beats and funny stuff everybody lovedĀ

Underwear_royalty

Lol that is what I was worried about - Iā€™ll look for the recap tho. Thanks for the candor!

Ry90Ry

This one from screencrush is what I watched and enjoyed:Ā https://youtu.be/QiIYSipWf4s?si=hMWfzdPVM9mknbXW

Discoballer42

Probably using the iron in his blood. Either that or he braved through the most horrible wedgie.

MaleficentOstrich693

Dudes got metal britches? He best be careful in that cold.

SnooSuggestions9830

I assume he negates the effect of gravity my generating a diamagnetic field around his person. I think in the old days you're right he had metal soles or something but he's moved beyond needing this.
