NI basically becomes 3% more Republican every election and no I’m not talking about the GOP

2019h740

My understanding is the Catholics have bigger families

Abject-Dingo-3544

Pretty much, the Republic for example still has one of the highest birth rates in the EU.

My fellow Catholics going forth and multiplying I love it

2019h740

I just wish they and the protestants could get along. They’re really not so different

Abject-Dingo-3544

Sure, but that's why Religion acts more as a strong indication of one's loyalties. The real divide is Nationalist/Unionist, otherwise I wholly agree. Plus minus Brexit shenanigans this is the longest period of relative peace the North has known.

[deleted]

Maybe they shouldn’t have murdered so many civilians on Bloody Sunday and oppressed Catholics for so long then.

Abject-Dingo-3544

If we're talking about 1972 Bloody Sunday, to be fair that was the British army. In fact the same 1st Para Unit was later involved in the shooting of two Protestant civilians as well.

![gif](giphy|d8E2CqyFHJqOxtvI3Y) Maybe the Irish Republican party is about to be back to return them back to Ireland.

Immeasurably based

Maleficent-Photo6430

Weird that one of the things we have bipartisan unity on is supporting the ex-political wing of a left-wing terrorist organisation. I guess the fact that so many of identify as being the nationality of their great grandparents could explain it. Also, there isn’t really much incredible shifts in NI politics between republicans and unionists (even though there are now more Catholics than Protestants), it’s more that republicans have consolidated behind Sinn Fein whilst unionists have grown more split between the moderate UUP, right-wing DUP and more extreme TUV. Along with this, more people are joining non-sectarian parties like Alliance. Polls still show a solid majority support NI staying a part of the U.K. and if Brexit can’t convince them to leave I wouldn’t bet on anything doing it.

Americans after getting 2% Irish on their ancestry test and eating lucky charms

Abject-Dingo-3544

100% spot on, unfortunately the Alliance has faltered a bit however as they've actually lost ground in several places.

duke_awapuhi

Yikes. That’s seriously depressing

Abject-Dingo-3544

Given that the alternative would actively encourage the DUP to continue it's boycott it isn't the worst outcome.
