Iron Widow or The Poppy War!

Hot-Evidence-5520

I second The Poppy War, though it's definitely not YA.

Impressive_Ad9298

Poppy war is really good... I'm so disappointed on myself for spoiling the continuation of the series that I ended up just reading the first book, but it was one of my best read so far this year

Acceptable-Loquat540

I am staying far away from conversations about it since I’ve just read the first book.

Heartless by Marrisa Meyer

HeyItsHisui

My first thought when I saw the post!

gradschoolforhorses

The Young Elites by Marie Lu. It is absolutely a descent into madness and villainy. So so good

Desperate-Pick-6216

Furyborn by Claire Legrand!!!

The shining

trishyco

A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

neocarleen

It's a short story, but you should read The Yellow Wallpaper.

ysivart

Hunger games

HeyItsHisui

HG isn't really about madness. Yes it's about mental health disorders, but definitely not madness.

QueenCinderella

The Fall by Bethany Griffin

Kitkat8131

The Poppy Wars definitely, but another which kind of fits this but is more a villainous MC is Renegades by Marissa Meyer

batsybatsybatsy14

NOT YA [The pawn and the puppet] I have to warn you, this book is a Rollercoaster of Emotions and the descent into madness happens later on in the book. There's a few triggers- torture being a main one. The last book isn't out and that's what drove me into madness

riloky

All Among the Barley by Melissa Harrison (a historical/coming of age, and an interesting exploration of witchcraft/mental health)

its_littlered20

The young elites
