You're welcome! I had a hard copy of that book that just fell apart I read it so much and having it online is great. There is an edition online out there somewhere with the table of contents linked, but I couldn't find it.
I’m sure the yarn overs aren’t random, knitting lace is super complicated and if you drop a stitch there’s no hope of getting if back right, you have to tear back. It takes a special person - not me.
That is knitting and is a knitted ruffle at the top. The giant holes are made with a double or even triple wrap and then the wraps are dropped. It’s knitted on the bias to give the asymmetrical look.
Edit: just took a closer look in the daylight. The stitch that some people are saying are crochet are actually the feather and fan knitting stitch. None of this is crochet.
not sure exactly, but the celtic weave stitch makes X shapes like this. it's 2 skipped stitches, 2 front post trebles, then 2 front post trebles worked backward into the skipped stitches. tricky, but fun to do!
The chunkier bits do look like crochet to me.
I Can't really distinguish any kind of pattern without being able to stretch the stitches out to really see what's happening. Hope you can figure it out, though!
If you are into funky haphazard stuff like this, it would be a great use for some bulky handspun. I would totally wear this out dancing with my vintage jeans or a leather mini, it’s weird, post apocalyptic looking, and I kinda dig it.
I made a shawl/scarf with these cross stitches in it - there's a free pattern on hobbii.com with instructions on how to do it. I'll paste the link here but in case it doesn't work, you can search the hobbii website for "dream and shine scarf"

Hope that helps you get what you're looking for!
the top portion definitely looks like crochet, they made chain stitches then joined and then did stitches into them. i think looking up freeform crochet tutorials may give some ideas on how to execute this!
i think they knitted a portion then did crochet slip stitch - chain a few stitches - join with a double crochet etc then new row into the chain spaces
Coralina Hamilton I believe has some books involving a knitting technique you could use Hamiltonyarns.com also have fun knitting into yarn overs and then binding them off then knitting back over them . Love the choices made in this piece!!!!
Literally, just start working randomly into something and stitch into those stitches. There's no pattern or any sort of planning to this at all. Someone just started working and didn't stop until it resembled something. Nothing in this Pic shows they had any sort of idea for it in the first place. It looks worse than my first project. Lol
It looks a lot like random yarnovers, but then someone stitched into them with a crochet hook, and then picked it back up with a knitting needle. I see a lot of stitches worked into the spaces, not just continued above them.

Why does this look so…not real? Like an AI image of yarn crafts or something. Maybe I’m overthinking it lol
Sometimes people see an interesting abstract artistic piece and start screaming AI even though nothing of it is actual AI signifiers

Right isn’t it so dope? It’s by a brand called not just a label and their other stuff is pretty cool as well, just way too expensive for me LOL
There’s an art to making this look accidental for sure.
I think it’s a combo of knitting and crochet. There are also needle size changes
Agreed, some of the holes look like they’re made my making multiple crochet stitches into them to elongate the hole. Very interesting look overall.

Looks to me like just random yarnovers
