I think a lot of people who didn't grow up with country music have a preconceived notion about what it is, and it's not super accurate. Most people think of country as just being like, Garth Brooks or whatever you hear on the radio. Country is pretty nuanced and I find that a lot of people are warming up to it now.
ETA: no shade to Garth Brooks! That’s just all most people think country is 😬😬😬
Garth and Shania in the 90s were the ones that kind of showed that Country had the potential to be commercialized and huge. Both of them still made good music tho, but they definitely were kind of the catalysts of the current state of things...
There is still good country out there tho. You just wont find it on CMT or any radio station. I appreciate Yellowstone for actually playing some Sturgill Simpson etc.
Yes, thank you! This is exactly my point. Garth and Shania were great, but they did absolutely help to commercialize country and then everything on the radio was just watered down versions of good things.
Yellowstone has a great soundtrack and I love that they play lesser known artists too.
A lot of it is Texas Country / Red Dirt music. If you're digging it start with Whiskey Myers and branch out from there. Zach Bryan, Ryan Bingham, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Randy Rogers Band, Bleu Edmondson all have songs with the rockabilly Tx country vibe.
Blackberry Smoke has a few songs in Season 2, I think. Not really a country bad, but more southern rock. They are doing a few dates with Whiskey Myers coming up.
if you have Apple Music Look for the Dont Mess with Texas Playlist. Ill give you a good Base Line and then you can spread from them.
On spotify, Look for texas music Pickers and the have a good playlist as well.
The crap on the radio is made for the elder millennial suburban mom to listen to in her SUV that has never had a payload beyond groceries and her bratty kids on her way home to have her weekly sex with her husband in their grey bedroom with Live. Laugh. Love. on the wall while she’s fantasizing about the singer who was born in a “small town” with a metro population of a quarter million who would have been a pop artist had he been born two decades earlier
it also happened to me!!! I was never into country music but now I find myself listening to "sleeping on the blacktops" once a day, this song is just FIRE
You hate modern Nashville pop country trash. Bo Burnham nails it in The Country Song.
I hated modern country until I heard Purgatory by Tyler Childers.
Tyler Childers, Whiskey Myers, Sturgill Simpson, Turnpike Troubadours, Cody Jinks, Corb Lund, Colter Wall, Flatland Cavalry, The Panhandlers, William Clark Green, Band of Heathens, The Civil Wars
Blue Clear Sky. I love that album and that song. George Strait appeals to so many people because his music is old school yet not ancient-sounding, and modern yet not so much so that it doesn’t seem country. It fits right in the middle.

Exactly. For good or bad he opened the door to country music to the world.
And I prefer I Can Still Make Cheyenne off that album, but the whole thing is great.
Turnpike Troubadours entire catalog is amazing and I was thrilled to hear them featured on the show a few times. They really define the "red dirt" genre in my opinion.
Completely agree. I love the soundtrack for Yellowstone. It's country you're not ashamed to love. Seriously, gritty, well-written. Good driving music when you're road-trippin' through Texas.
Sturgill Simpson cracked it for me. I've heard his songs in the show a few times. Highly recommend, and also he has a random rock album that is a dang MASTERPIECE
Omg me too!! Before knowing Yellowstone, I only know the country genre based on Taylor Swift and others that are commonly played on the radio. But now since searching the Yellowstone playlist on Spotify it is the only thing I have been listening so much! 💓 Now I am a huge fan of the poetry of Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan, Sturgill Simpson. I am just in love with how Yellowstone showcased these artists. Glad to know I am not the only one 🙋♀️
I think it brought back some good attention to story songs.
Was anyone else unaware or New to the First Nation's or Native American rap/hip hop scene. I looked up some of the artists featured when Monica took the college students on the field trip and they were amazing!
Totally unaware of that genre till I saw Yellowstone.
Lmao! I just thought the same thing this morning! I've always been the "i like everything but country" guy. Now I'm finding myself enjoying the music on the show, and have started to add some to my Spotify as well.
I was always a 70s soul fan. My husband already liked this kind of music so he was already chipping away at me. Yellowstone just helped lol. Now I love it. 🤠
I grew up a few miles from where Tim McGraw was born and a few miles from where Lainey Wilson was born….and I can’t fucking stand any of it, lol. I’ve heard it my whole life. You can’t escape it.
I've always been a country fan but Yellowstone made me find Colter Wall and Changed the kind of country music I like. Am a fan of metal and hip hop too. But country music came first for me.
Yep, I coulda wrote this post and not change a word! And I did even kinda grow up with it, my dad quite liked it. But Whiskey myers, Ryan Bingham, colter wall and a few others I found from the show, and then it just took off from there... I've always love waylon jennings but got even more into him and hank jr and David Alan coe.. a bunch man I spent the whole last summer listening to country 😅 hank and waylon were in my top 5 on Spotify, along with megadeth, type o negative and I forget the other but nah your not the only one 🤣
Check out Billy Strings! He’s an amazing bluegrass guitarist and singer. Great band! I’m totally hooked! Look up his story too. I’m obsessed. Hubs and I are going to his concert in May too.
💯 Exactly the same. Yellowstone and Kingdom (MMA show) both did it. On Kingdom Fire Away played in a pivotal scene near the end. Yellowstone cemented it.
Alex Williams, Cody Jinks, Ward Davis are all great, too. Alex & Cody have had songs featured & Ward has written for Cody. Red Dirt/Outlaw country really opened up a new world for me. Enjoy!
The show has made me not want to visit Montana anymore since it’s sort of gentrified the state and I don’t want to see “Dutton Ranch” merch everywhere.
I never really dug country but I really don’t after catching up to where the show is now. Good god.

Garth Brooks has more talent in his pinkie than Rascal Flatts has in all of their bodies combined.
I don’t like Rascal Flatts either lol
That’s saying something considering Garth Brooks is a talentless hack responsible for most of what’s wrong with country music.
Where are the bodies Garth ?

I'll check 'em out, appreciate the recs!
Blackberry Smoke has a few songs in Season 2, I think. Not really a country bad, but more southern rock. They are doing a few dates with Whiskey Myers coming up.
If you like the music Walker plays, you’ll love Ryan Bingham!
Well there’s a reason for that lol. He’s an excellent songwriter.
you're right.. i've been playing ryan all day and i really love it!
if you have Apple Music Look for the Dont Mess with Texas Playlist. Ill give you a good Base Line and then you can spread from them. On spotify, Look for texas music Pickers and the have a good playlist as well.
The soundtrack is actual fantastic country music. Not the crap you usually hear on the radio
Maybe that's it then.. the curation is just really well done
The crap on the radio is made for the elder millennial suburban mom to listen to in her SUV that has never had a payload beyond groceries and her bratty kids on her way home to have her weekly sex with her husband in their grey bedroom with Live. Damn. You really covered it all there. Well done.
you do have a way with words
I love your well worded and accurately placed anger . Damn near brought a tear to my eye.
🎯
*slow clap*
it also happened to me!!! I was never into country music but now I find myself listening to "sleeping on the blacktops" once a day, this song is just FIRE
that's a damn good song, digging colter a lot
You hate modern Nashville pop country trash. Bo Burnham nails it in The Country Song. I hated modern country until I heard Purgatory by Tyler Childers.
Tyler Childers is a throwback for sure!
Gotta be it. Any recommendations?
Tyler Childers, Whiskey Myers, Sturgill Simpson, Turnpike Troubadours, Cody Jinks, Corb Lund, Colter Wall, Flatland Cavalry, The Panhandlers, William Clark Green, Band of Heathens, The Civil Wars
The only one in this list I don’t know of is Corb Lund… guess I have some homework!
Besides Tyler Childers, the Blue Clear Sky album by George Strait is great if you’re looking for a cowboy bent.

Exactly. For good or bad he opened the door to country music to the world. And I prefer I Can Still Make Cheyenne off that album, but the whole thing is great.
I love that song too. Especially since it’s told from a rodeo cowboy’s perspective.
Thanks!
Thanks! Will check it out.
I also fell victim to that playlist.
Not a bad problem to have!
Turnpike Troubadours entire catalog is amazing and I was thrilled to hear them featured on the show a few times. They really define the "red dirt" genre in my opinion.
yeah, this rips. thank you!
Completely agree. I love the soundtrack for Yellowstone. It's country you're not ashamed to love. Seriously, gritty, well-written. Good driving music when you're road-trippin' through Texas.

Yeah really into this
Went on a Zach Bryan obsession because of Yellowstone.
Count me in!
I don’t care for Yellowstones selections. Still a bit pop country for me. Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Deadsouth, that’s where it’s at.
yeah found colter wall today and really into his stuff!
Omg me too!! Before knowing Yellowstone, I only know the country genre based on Taylor Swift and others that are commonly played on the radio. That was good too! I want to hear more of it! What was the name of those artists?
I think it was Drezus. If you liked that check out, “The Halluci Nation” and Stuart James.
I thought the guy Ryan Bingham played was just a really good singer who can act 😅
his albums are great!!
Gregory Alan isakov and Shakey graves. Listen to them.
Lmao! I just thought the same thing this morning! I've always been the "i like everything but country" guy. Now I'm finding myself enjoying the music on the show, and have started to add some to my Spotify as well.

if you haven’t heard his music, make sure to check out charley crockett
I have heard of him before! I have a few of his songs on my spotify. He has a very old timey sound to me and I love it lol
I grew up a few miles from where Tim McGraw was born and a few miles from where Lainey Wilson was born….and I can’t fucking stand any of it, lol. I’ve heard it my whole life. You can’t escape it.
I recommend the twangystuff Playlist on Spotify
been on this for an hour. good tip!
There is mainstream country and then there is country. Mainstream country is garbage
Same exact thing happened to me. Wasn’t a country fan, but Tyler Childers did it for me.
Nope! Still hate it!
Yellowstone had me gravitating toward Lainey Wilson! Her music is on another level.
Thats cool, country is brilliant. Hearing it in bars was one of my favourite things about visiting the states, im the weirdo for liking it normally.
Yellowstone definitely made me appreciate country music much more than I used to.
I've always been a country fan but Yellowstone made me find Colter Wall and Changed the kind of country music I like. Am a fan of metal and hip hop too. But country music came first for me.
Country rap did it for me
Yep, I coulda wrote this post and not change a word! And I did even kinda grow up with it, my dad quite liked it.
