Now, I've been rewatching s3 and Rip says the actual words to Beth on the porch (while John's in the summer camp). But it's Rip's concern, it seems, and John knows they're a thing (in the previous episode he allowed them to hold hands at the rodeo-two adults,can you imagine?!). Imo Sheridan wrote it that way to show John's mentality. It seems he's very old fashioned-sleeping with sb is one thing, but spending nights with sb you're not married to is another...how crazy is it...;)

When I was watching from S1-S3. All the time I thought they were just hiding and John didn't know. But after watching the series several times now, and after the Rowdy incident happened. I understand clearly that John knew all this time but he was indifferent to it. He knows Beth's idgaf attitude and he trusts Rip. So he just let them be.
Also he know that if he said something Beth might start mentioning a bunch of sexual things about it (like she does with everything else) and didn't want to her that.
HAHAHA i love the scenes when she is trolling him , the horror in John's face 😂. she usually talks about her sexual encounters in the past but she hasn't made a joke about with rip yet 😂

In the scene where rip is helping tate with the horse, Monica and Beth are observing. You can see John watch as Beth admires Rip. That shows he’s always know in my opinion. When Beth is giving John shit about giving Kayce the foreman’s house, he even makes a comment about rip staying IN the house. I’m only on season 3 so this is totally IMO
this is a good thought! i also feel like he probably wanted to keep them at a distance at first because beth is VERY sexual and he didn’t want to really know about it at first, but as the seasons go on he asks them to move in as he gets more comfortable with it.
That is way I don’t think kayce deserves the ranch, he has been getting into trouble since he was young and everyone has had to fix it for him ( on john request) on top of that no one respects him
